Humboldt County Civil Grand Jury Reports on Conditions at Facilities Including Sempervirens, Corrections, Animal Shelter and More
Press release from the Humboldt Grand Jury:
The Humboldt County Civil Grand Jury reports on the condition and management of County facilities, with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Animal Shelter and the Clark Complex which houses both the Sempervirens Psychiatric Health facility and the Sheriff’s Coroner facility, getting special notice. The Grand jury found both facilities in need of immediate repairs. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Garberville Station was also singled out. The Grand Jury suggests several recommendations that would make the Garberville facility more user friendly.

“The County of Humboldt will hold a public meeting on 6/12/2023 to discuss and approve budgets for the upcoming fiscal year (FY) 2023-24.”
“The meeting will also explore alternative measures, such as mandatory furloughs, to reduce the budget deficit and prevent staffing reductions.”
Last I heard they said the budget was going to be balanced.
The county seems to have an endless budget for new, expensive SUVs, but somehow we have nothing left for road repairs. All the roads in SoHum are crumbling, but DHS employees drive brand new SUVs. Can’t pay IHSS care providers another .18 an hour. I was told two years ago they were going to repave our main street. Nope. Serious concerns over budget allocations….
The Grand Jury fails to understand that it’s the BOS, not the Sheriff or HHSA that allocates funding.
The Grand Jury also fails to understand that Humco is a poor rural county that lacks the resources to fund the GJ’s wish list of increased salaries, financial incentives and facilities in tip top condition.
Given their concern about proper maintenance, I wonder what roads they drove on when visiting the facilities?
The BOS ignores all sound advice.
