Cheryl Antony, a spokesperson for Shelter Cove Fire told us, “The guy was staying at The Inn of the Lost Coast. He went out to walk his dog late…The dog showed up at the motel room but not the guy. So his wife called 911.”
The man was eventually located seriously injured.
According to a post on Shelter Cove Fire’s Instagram page, “Approximately 03:45 crews from SCFD, Southern Humboldt Technical Rescue Team, City Ambulance, USCG, and Humboldt County Sheriff responded to a medical rescue for a victim who fell approximately 150’ over a cliff in Shelter Cove. Crews worked together for over two hours to successfully rescue the victim via high angle rope rescue.”
When the man reached the top, medical personnel were waiting to assist. According to Shelter Cove Fire, “The patient was assessed by paramedics from City Ambulance and flown to a trauma center by the [Coast Guard] with major injuries.”
Shelter Cove Fire thanked the following agencies for their assistance:

Dang! 150 feet is far enough to be able to think about your poor life choices on the way down.
I hope the man recovers completely!!!
I jumped off a cliff into Blue Pool several years ago up in OR. The higher one is 60-70′. That took 2-3 seconds from step to splash, which was enough time for thinking I had made a bad choice.
Probably bounced off the rocks several times on the 150 ft way down then down there several hours before help arrived. Can’t help but wonder how anyone could misstep over an obvious cliff edge but fortunate dog wasn’t tethered to falling man
Agreed. Sounds like the dog might have been the true first responder. Good girl Lassie!
An excellent way to seriously injure or kill yourself is to walk around In rugged terrain at night with NO LIGHT. That’s the missing clue. You can’t see hazards in the dark. In a thickly forested area, you can leave your eye on a branch. It helps to be in an unfamiliar area.
As the old saying goes, “The long fall is bad enough, but then there’s that sudden stop at the bottom.”
Another dandy is, “Watch that first step”!!! It’s a Killer!!!!
And then we have, “Look before you leap.”
How horribly sad. I hope he is able to make a full recovery from his fall.
Lucky to be alive! SCVFD whoop whoop, good job!
Could have called the Coast Guard for the copter and fast evac to the hospital. Sure would have saved a lot of time.
Read the story again. He was flown by CC Helo to a hospital for treatment.
CG would not risk a copter cliff rescue
at night. See memorial at the light house.
it says they did
Says the keyboard warrior that doesn’t have a clue. Smh
Good Job ! And, Thank You for your service
Oops that last step was a thrill ride! Hate that when it happens! So very glad he was found and survived!
Good dog!
Step #1: Out a night ? Buy a headlamp.
Great advice and useful for hands free working in dark areas.
Totally petty but a person can fall over an edge maybe but usually falls off a cliff.
Pedantic and picayune also, but knock yourself out.
Impressive rescue.
We are all very fortunate to have these extraordinary rescue folks available in such an emergency.
I am very grateful for all of them and the indispensable service that they provide…
It is very humbling.
Much respect to them all.
I’m sorry but this seems fishy to me…like a badly scripted Hallmark movie
Clever observation. No doubt Kym conspired with a half dozen local agencies to concoct this click-bait story.
We’re on to you, Kym.
??I think he means something like somebody actually pushed him…?♂️
Well, OK, a reasonable possibility, but people do this stuff all the time. It’s the “I’m invincible” fantasy. If you follow the Kircher Alaska homestead (actually a ranch) “reality” show, one of them walked off a cliff at night on a hunting trip. No emergency and he grew up there! A micro-light was just too much to pack in. Phoniest stuff is on the hunting trips, they count on an urban population. Nice folks, though. Glad they can afford skip loaders, graders, bulldozers and a small ship on the “homestead.” It was a homestead in 1949.
Consider the entire story board John, maybe it’s you who smells fishy. For its likely some one gave him crabs, or his problem might be due to a week stomach ‘,question the narrative ‘
Doh!
