Huffman Tours Redwoods Rural Health Center’s Remodeled Facilities

Redwoods Rural Health Center (RRHC) in Redway hosted Congressman Jared Huffman at their West Coast Road location on February 13 for a tour of the recently renovated medical and dental offices funded by federal grants through the CARES Act and the American Rescue Plan (ARP).

Congressman Huffman, representative of the 2nd Congressional District, has been a champion of legislation to aid in health center funding. On Monday, RRHC’s Executive Director, Tina Tvedt Schaible expressed gratitude for Congressman Huffman’s support in securing funds that enable the rural health center to provide health care to residents of Southern Humboldt and the Eel River Valley.

RRHC was founded in the early 70s as residents sought out equitable and alternative healthcare options for members of their rural community.  The mission remains today. Forty-four percent of the health center’s 2022 $11.2 million revenue was from Medicaid and Medi-Cal insurance. Federal grant funding accounted for 32% of the health center’s revenue.

Tvedt Schaible stated that the new medical equipment provided more accurate readings and the new furniture allowed for better ease of use for patients with mobility issues as well as providing a more inviting and relaxed environment for patients.

At the end of the medical remodel tour, Tvedt Schaible and board members escorted Huffman to the adjacent property where staff housing and additional parking will be constructed. Housing shortages and the remote nature of the area has been a hurdle in attracting qualified healthcare professionals to the area, a problem the RRHC staff and board believe will be remedied with staff housing.

A proponent of affordable housing projects, Huffman was encouraged by the health center’s plans.

In addition to the staff housing plans, the RRHC has been expanding its services, adding the Briceland Road satellite dental clinic in 2021 to its growing facilities list that includes a satellite medical clinic in Fortuna as well as mobile medical and dental vans and school-based sites in Redway, Miranda, and Rio Dell.

Dental visits account for 48% of all patient visits to the health center. Since the opening of the satellite dental clinic on Briceland Road that doubled their dental capacity, RRHC has been able to hire two additional dentists and a dental hygienist. In what Tvedt Schaible described as a “dental desert”, RRHC has been able to start taking new patients for the first time in decades.

RRHC has been expanding their behavioral health options as well with the continued ability to access patients using telehealth allowing providers to offer care to patients that may struggle to attend in-person appointments. There is currently a waiting list for behavioral health appointments, but Tvedt Schaible said the health center is hoping to hire additional personnel to meet patient needs.

RRHC also offers prenatal and postnatal healthcare. With the nearest birth center sixty miles away, Tvedt Schaible said that patients are able to access health care services at the health center who can coordinate care with the hospital or birthing center of the patient’s choice. Offering services closer to where patients reside reduces the financial cost and stress associated with traveling great distances for care.

Expanded services equal expanded staff. RRHC has increased its staff to 50 full-time employees, a 26% increase since 2018. Encouraging local residents to enter the healthcare profession, RRHC grants two $5000 college scholarships to Southern Humboldt residents focused on the medical field.

As Tvedt Schaible and team celebrate their successes, they continue to advocate for healthcare services for their patients and community. In addition to expressing gratitude for Huffman’s support of health care funding, the executive director took the opportunity to champion for expansion of Medicare coverage of chiropractic and acupuncture services that are not currently covered at Federally Qualified Health Centers like RRHC. Additionally, she asked for Huffman’s help in reducing the “burdensome” administrative requirements for dental treatment of the country’s Veterans.

Huffman and staff took note of Tvedt Schaible’s requests and thanked her for bringing their attention to the hurdles to care for Veterans and seniors.

Redwoods Rural Health Center offers medical, dental, behavioral health, acupuncture, perinatal care, chiropractic services, suboxone program, nutritional education, and COVID-19 vaccination. For a full list of their services, visit their website or call 707-923-2783 to schedule an appointment.

I bet Jared loves his promotion to Senator, but sadly, he is only a member of the US House of Representatives. He is a great member however.

The policies of bias, inequality and discriminatory hiring at RRHC and SoHum Health are clear.

Hire some men, or face possible legal actions. Diversity means half men and half women!

RRHC has 4 times the revenue of SoHum Health, and it makes no sense to have both facilities, in the long run.

SoHum Health has a few SNF beds, and an “Urgent Care” transfer station, and a Pharmacy/Lab/Imaging.

Clearly, the two organizations should join together, especially since RRHC is Federally Funded, and SoHum Health depends on MediCare and Medi-Cal.

Housing has become the benefit which determines adequate staffing.

Having two local “Boards” and two separate entities with the approximate same mission, makes no sense.

Nice work RRHC!

Now hire some men…

BTW, IMO Huffman is ineffective and a waste of resources…

The men have to apply for the jobs to get hired. We would love to have more men on the Board of Directors also, and any persons other than ‘white’. Sadly, none of those folks are stepping forward. Not shown are our two male BOD volunteers.

Especially since there may have been other sites in So Humb uUffman could have visited to hear from locals and he spent all of 30 minutes at RRHC after driving down from No Humb. I hope they stopped at some other places along the way.

You can thank the fraud Huffman and Sleepy Joe for bailing out the Humboldt county budget the past few years. With the covid bail out ending, the county goes immediately $12 million into the hole this year. Perhaps you can volunteer your Social Security and MediCare/MediCal subsidies to help pay off this deficit or maybe it’s the $1000 a month of ObamaCare subsidy you can give up.

Well, they are in a healthcare setting so probably a good idea to wear a mask considering the people who come and go from there.

Only lowered my mask for on outside photo. Other wise I wear my (always homemade) masks inside everywhere. Not a fan of masks made from all petroleum products.

Outdoor masks? Really? What a joke. Frauds, all of them. You can stop with the charades Huffman and RRHC staff/board. “trust the science, wear a mask”. Eat it.

Ever think about what replaces pre-legalization marijuana revenue. Tourism is at best an incremental increase. Take the tourism you already have and add maybe 25-50%, not enough to replace the lost marijuana revenue. The COOPs are a smart opportunity, but the next best thing is becoming a center of healthcare for a huge underserved region. Think of all the MediCare and MediCal dollars flowing into the region rather than driving out of town. Farmers from times passed failed to diversify the South Humboldt economy, while the big money was flowing. The next generation has to play catch-up. Diversify now, your children will thank you.

We are the “Generation playing catch-up”…

SHCHD is a failure, has been since the bankruptcy/Harry Jasper days.

RRHC has made strides in Behavioral Health while the “Rehab” operations have gone out of business…

Does RRHC have a Pharmacy? A laboratory? Imaging? Mammography?

You are building housing, and now you need a real clinical operation capable of meeting the needs of your community!

The average Native American Tribe has a MUCH more extensive facility, and often, they provide an anchor for other businesses…

SHCHD is a bad joke, and it exists as a Boutique for the wealthy old-timers… It will never exist as they are dreaming…

Your Federal Clinic is in need of diversity in hiring, and you also need a few good men to write Grant Proposals…

Hopefully you will get those Board Members and they will be able to see through the Pot Smoke in Redway…

I read the comments here and am saddened and apalled. RRHC provides non-judgemental care to the entire community. Has done for nearly 50 years. “Hire men”?? Hey men, you’ve been running things for centuries, where are your applications? I guess none of the commenters need medical care or have teeth. What a sad response to one of our truly functional homegrown institutions.
Thank you for ALL you do Rep. Huffman.

48% of the care is Dental?

That’s where the money is…

RRHC is the leading healthcare provider in SoHum, and SoHum Healthcare is a distant last place player…

Discrimination is illegal, and so is not following your own policies…

Accupuncture and Chiropractic manipulation is quackery. I would rather see money spent on real medical care and dental care. Come on Jared, you said you were an atheist start acting like one.

Redwoods Rural Health Center is doing an admirable job of serving our community. I’m glad they continue to expand services—we need them! I’m proud to be one of the volunteers on their board, and see first-hand the dedication the entire staff shows to improving both services and health in our entire community. Thank you for reminding our elected officials that health care in rural communities is vital.
