Humboldt Bay Trail North Set to Receive Trail Mileage Markers
Press release from the City of Arcata:
Humboldt Bay Trail North winding through the Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary.
The City of Arcata Environmental Services will be painting trail mileage markers on the Humboldt Bay Trail North.
Starting at Foster Avenue at the northern terminus of the Humboldt Bay Trail through town, mileage markers will appear every tenth of a mile allowing trail users to orient their whereabouts. Mileage markers will assist trail users to identify their location for emergency services, trail service requests and tracking of distance traveled.
Mileage markers will end at the southern point of the Humboldt Bay Trail North, referred to locally as Two Rocks. Complete trail mileage for this stretch is four miles. Once the Humboldt Bay Trail South is complete between Arcata’s trail and the Eureka Waterfront Trail, trail mileage markers will continue south, completing a continuous 14-mile, non-motorized trail from central Arcata to southern Eureka.
The Humboldt Bay Trail is a collaborate effort between the City of Arcata, City of Eureka, County of Humboldt, Great Redwood Trail Agency, California Coastal Conservancy, and many other entities.

Repeating a massive mistake. Mark them in Miles and Kilometers. Time for the USA to join the ‘rest of the world’ in the metric system. Only countries left on the ancient system are Liberia, Myanmar, and the USA.
Way ‘back in the day’ (70’s of so, last century) CalTrans used to put both mile/kilometer markings on the road signs. Cars came with both miles/metric on the speedometer. Somebody/somehow killed it.
Should bring that practice back. Something that the government (state and federal) could do with no cost, just do ‘replacement’ road signs with miles/metric. In the year 2035 or so, convert the rest of them.
Have no idea why the government hasn’t been moving on that idea.
Having spent enough time abroad, I do metric fairly well. I wouldn’t mind if the US converted to the system as I don’t need to learn it from scratch. But, frankly, most Americans don’t want it and imposing stuff on Americans is always a battle. We’re a cantankerous people and arguing that this is what the rest of the world does is not especially pursuasive.
Well, cubits and hogsheads it is then !
I went to public school during the standard – metric years. I can still convert with little effort.
What is the mnemonic? A cubic-meter of water weighs precisely one kilogram?
A cubic decimeter of water equals one kilogram…
A cubic meter of water weighs 1000 kilograms
They should include money markers too. If it gets completed the 14 miles will have cost about $40,000,000. Maybe a marker for every $100,000. How about a kiosk every mile to show what else could have been done with that money.
This is just more overreach forcing humanity into their artificial “reality.” We are supposed to proceed as if every mile is the same distance as every other mile. What about uphill and downhill? That’s as absurd as suggesting that every moment is the same. Sometimes a minute persists in one’s perceptions, while another goes by in a blink.
Say no to Big Weights & Measures! The protests start in a little while…
