Free Permits for Up to 12 Cords of Personal-Use Firewood Available for the Remainder of 2022

Press release from the Klamath National Forest:

The Klamath National Forest is now issuing free personal-use firewood permits for up to 12 cords of firewood for the remainder of 2022.

Each of the ranger districts on the Klamath National Forest have experienced large wildfires in the last few years, resulting in vast burned areas across National Forest system lands and an abundance of dead and downed wood.

“Communities and the forest alike have been through back-to-back difficult fire seasons,” said Deputy Forest Supervisor Kris Sexton. “Providing free firewood is the right thing to do for communities and the right thing to do to help remove fuel from the woods.”

Permits are available through all Klamath National Forest offices:

  • Goosenest Ranger District – 37805 Hwy. 97, Macdoel, CA – 530-398-4391
  • Happy Camp/Oak Knoll Ranger District – 63822 Hwy. 96, Happy Camp, CA – 530-493-2243
  • Salmon/Scott River Ranger District – 11236 N. Hwy. 3, Fort Jones, CA – (530) 468-5351
  • Klamath National Forest Supervisor’s Office – 1711 S. Main St., Yreka, CA – (530) 842-6131

The free personal-use permits are good for up to 12 cords and can be used in conjunction with previously purchased permits. Both free and purchased permits expire on Dec. 31, 2022. The free permits are valid throughout the Klamath National Forest. Woodcutters must have their free permits in their possession while cutting firewood and adhere to the requirements of the permit.

“Free firewood is the right thing to do”
Is this admitting how wrong our government is by charging for firewood permits in the past? Will they not charge in the future, or will it be “ok” not to do the right thing.
Is this “supervisor” within their boundaries by determining the rest of the country is wrong by charging money for firewood permits?

If you want the wood cleaned up, just say ” Hey the forest is open to wood gathering”. Free permits with timelines constricts the process.
