The City of Arcata’s Building & Engineering Department wishes to inform homeowners, contractors, drafters, architects, and engineers about pending Title 24 code changes.

A new code cycle has arrived and will take effect on Sunday, Jan.1, 2023. All new projects submitted to our department for review on or after Jan. 1 will be reviewed under the new code cycle. Individuals currently working on a design using the 2019 codes are encouraged to submit their designs/plans on or before Saturday, Dec. 31.

Every three years the national model codes and standards are published, and by law California is required to incorporate specific model codes and standards into Title 24. The model code publishers often issue significant code change documents explaining national code updates and the reasons for them. This year’s updates can be read at dgs.ca.gov/BSC/Codes.

Yeah, driftwood don’t cut it nowadays. Especially when you’re gonna sell the house.

You can avoid most building codes with an Alternative Owner Builder permit. But I believe you have to be off grid to qualify
