[UPDATE 10:36 p.m.] PG&E Plans to Spray Herbicides on Hundreds of Private Parcels Throughout Humboldt County

PG&E plans to spray herbicide at the spots indicated by the red and yellow markers shown on this map. [Screenshot of a map in KML format sent to KMUD by Wright Tree Service]

Story shared with us by KMUD News. Our teams cooperate because we believe that our community grows stronger when we all work together.

On Thursday, September 29, Humboldt County officials were alerted to PG&Eʼs plan to apply a series of herbicides on hundreds of private parcels throughout the county–Benbow to Trinidad, Alderpoint to Petrolia, and Willow Creek to Orick.  PG&E contractors intend on spraying herbicides in an 11-foot-radius around PG&E infrastructure on property belonging to landowners who are for the most part as yet unaware of the planned spraying. Work is scheduled to begin as soon as Monday, October 3rd.

PG&E's Scheduled work

Information from PG&E contractors on spraying conditions.

PG&E contractor, Wright Tree Service, emailed local officials stating that they would refrain from spraying on county property due to an agreement from 1997, but would proceed to contact local landowners whose properties are slated for an herbicide treatment. Under the permit issued by the county, contractors will be allowed to use four different herbicides, which includes up to 64 ounces of Roundup, a glyphosate-based herbicide, per acre…which equates to approximately 2 ounces per ten power poles, according to their figures. [Click here for a pdf showing information on the spray.]

Wright Tree Service sent a map depicting the areas slated for herbicide spraying.

This is a screenshot of the map sent by Wright Tree Service zoomed in to show the Salmon Creek watershed in Southern Humboldt. Clicking or touching the map, will download a KMZ file map which will work on Google Earth and show all the sites in Humboldt County. Once on that map, each marker can be clicked and their gps coordinates will show. Yellow markers show private property and red show public property.[Please note: The map provided by Wright Tree Service was a KML file. We converted to a KMZ which will work with our site.]

KMUD News contacted a local landowner whose property had been pinned on the  map. The site is home to an organic flower company, Tranquility Lane Flowers, in  Whitethorn. The landowner, Donna Lovatto, was surprised and outraged to learn that her property had been selected for an herbicide treatment. She cited concerns regarding their organic farm and sensitive watershed that provides refuge to an at-risk species of salmon.

Lovatto was under the impression that the County of Humboldt had an herbicide ban. She recalled a 1997 agreement. After further review, KMUD News was able to  determine that there never was a ban in place, instead, an agreement existed between the County and Caltrans (who, at the time, was broadcast-spraying herbicides along roadsides) to “discontinue all herbicide spraying.”

an agreement existed between the County and Caltrans

An agreement exists between the County and Caltrans.

Humboldt Countyʼs Interim Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer of Weights and  Measures, Weylan Shaw, agreed with our interpretation of the document. Shaw  stated that his department is in touch with PG&Eʼs ‘pest control expertʼ and  extended his officeʼs services to answer the publicʼs questions. His office is available Monday through Friday at (707) 441-5260

Seeking additional information, KMUD News reached out to PG&E spokesperson,  Deanna Contreras, who emailed the following:

Response from PG&E.

Herbicide applications are scheduled to begin on Monday, October 3rd.

Round two of attempted spraying, but with a different contractor.

Put up signs. Require 24 hour notice. Change the code on gate locks. Make it so the contractors can’t jump your gate.

CA law says if property is entirely fenced, then only a process service or law enforcement may enter. Others are trespassing.

That’s defintely a trespass. CA law PRC 4295 states that utilities must contact landowners prior to entry. PGE has historically ignored that unless a landowner kicks up a fuss. The only time that a utility can enter a property without notice is an emergency…a downed line, a fire are examples of an emergency. Inspecting or conducting vegetation or equipment management are not emergencies. Do people want the laws that regulate utility companies posted here? I have them downloaded and I regularly hand them out to their contractors. Let’s ask Kym if she’ss post them with a brief article overviewing landowner rights and PGE responsibilities.

Yeah. And BIG donations to ‘leaders’ in our state. Is it any wonder why Newsom didn’t put them out of business or break them up when they went through bankruptcy? No. Just like the prison guards union, PG&E holds a lot of POWER through the corrupted political system! (And if you think this has been or would be any different if Republicans were in charge….. NOPE! Likely worse).

When we go super groovy and all electric, after Pg&e raises rates out of control, California needs a scapegoat. That’s the only reason the government hasn’t already absorbed the electric utilities.

That’s my conspiracy theory anyway!

About a thousand acres of forest was clear cut (not the legal term but the logical term) on fickle hill almost ten years ago. green diamond hacked and squirted toxic chemicals, but they denied it. I literally caught them in the middle of the early morning doing it and the manager drove up immediately after I called to assure me I didn’t see what I saw. The smell, the devastation, I’ll never forget it. After they sprayed these chemicals Two babies died from birth defects who lived there. I suspect why they died, but how do you prove it in a court of law? And How can people hold corporations accountable who live by a completely different set of laws?

In the 70’s? This has been happening all over the state routinely for the last few years. In most counties this is fairly commonplace.

Traditional market cannabis is probably the safest in reality. You can legally spray round-up on cannabis directly and still pass tests. Just another of many examples for how legalization didn’t deliver what it promised.

We have to pass an ordinance like they did in Mendocino folks. It’s not perfect , but it’s the only hope we have for the long term, beyond direct action.

Years ago (before my Kmud show was canceled) I interviewed Ben price, the cofounder of the community environmental legal defense fund, who wrote this mendo ordinance banning hack and squirt and hundreds of comparable ordinances nationwide. CELDF protects community’s and the environment and they even helped rewrite the constitution in Ecuador for those aims.

The only thing stopping our community from protecting ecosystems is a lack of people power and organization. Ben said we need a team of people willing to fight for years but sadly no one wanted to help years ago. So If anyone wants to stop this for good and not just for pge but all corporations, we have to get organized yesterday. We not only can do this, we have to. Feel free to email me [email protected]

Thanks for asking. There were a couple frivolous reasons such as my having too many past and co hosts cover for me during the most challenging year of my life. I was not told this was an issue actually until the moment I was canceled, or I would have corrected it if given the chance to. ultimately the overarching message was some of the staff just didn’t like me. Which seems irrelevant in the aim of KMUD.

At one point KMUD was free speech and inclusive but after COVID everything changed. They wouldn’t allow my featuring a segment about herbal methods for covid relief (not cures)because the government told them it was “misinformation,” despite my having a show about herbal healing methods (harmony and healing) for years prior, doing exactly that with an Ayurvedic specialist etc. I feel like I got canceled because I didn’t glom onto mainstream narratives and I wanted people who were suffering to find natural ways to feel better. No one was talking about it at the time.

During COVID, the managers cycled through and staff etc became disconnected due to a lack of actual contact with volunteers. We literally couldn’t go in studio to engineer our own shows effectively and there seemed to be different unspoken rules for everyone. Some were told they had to volunteer something like 40 hours a month to step foot inside for example (meaning their shows are ruined bc of errors), others just got right in. then they changed the rules specifically to cancel me regarding the hosts covering and my perspective on natural living. The hosts I had cover for me were seasoned hosts and one was invited back after I was canceled so I brought value if anything based on those facts.

I expressed I would sacrifice and never say COVID on my Monday morning magazine show and promised I would only focus on this abatement issue and kmud still canceled me.

Now I’m just on Ed densons show basically every month (fourth Thursday 7-8pm) which has been nice to do together. but having those 2 hour magazine shows really helped get a needed larger message across mainly about the tragedies around code enforcement and the abatement program, which has ruined our community particularly in rural Humboldt, district two.

I think It’s a badge of honor to be canceled these days, most of my favorite reporters got canceled too (ex. Chris hedges). it’s just sad that our community couldn’t be more informed, organized and so effective at reaching a common sustainable aim. Not just with code enforcement but this matter too. There are solutions but we cannot realize them without free speech networks such as these.

Nicole. You have much to offer. Yet you also, often play the victim. I would suggest looking in the mirror. I agree with ‘Have seen it’. I believe ‘your heart and intentions are in the right place. Just not strong on self-reflection’…. and responsibility’.

I do, thanks. But The only “victim” is the environment and our community members, because “Taking responsibility” involves speaking and organizing, but KMUD won’t let their community use those airwaves to do so. Seems you havnt Ben round long enough to know better.

what about the ten programmers canceled last year who had the same experience there? are they all “victims” not taking “responsibility” too? It couldn’t be the ever changing staff, oh no never. And What about the funding issue? It’s not a coincidence, when you silence entire groups of people, that those same people do not donate. Do you know how many elders just stopped donating and helping since COVID? People who gave for decades now give nothing, including their time, and for the same reasons. It’s sad and unnecessary.

It’s fine if you want to be like npr, just Do not call yourself free speech and then stifle free speech. that’s the issue all of the volunteers and programmers who left had, I am not unique.

Being open and upfront are actually indications of a person who values self reflection, while hiding behind being a troll is fruitless. I had the courage to put my name on my comment, sadly this troll does not. I know who you are of course, and I hope you know that I know You let the community down royally, and not just on this issue.

Silencing voices isn’t helping our community. everyone brings unique gifts to the table and we all need one another. honoring that is a part of Kmud’s mission. It’s not too late to change.

At every turn we are being exposed to so many cancer causing agents. The workers they are up and down all day. The toxic transformers. Then add a bunch of glycophosphate around that takes a while to dissipate. No problem, no problem. Yay! Fun make a bunch more dead brush and stuff around that will keep our work going for a few more years cuz we got to go in and remove that next. Love their smiling faces in the picture, subliminal sabotage.

Round Up should be outlawed, PERIOD. That said, what’s with the photo of the two white guys? The field personnel don’t make these decisions. Want a look at the real villains, look no further than Geisha Williams and her cohorts. You remember Geisha, the CEO of PG&E that all but eliminated line maintenance for the bottom line and as a consequence burned down Paradise, Ca. Ask one of the field guys what happened to the ratio of field to office workers under her watch. She resigned after less than two years, but took a hefty chunk of rate-payers cash with her. But hey, we just can’t stop demonizing the left’s villain du jour, now can we?

Hello Kim. The reporter should talk to me as the story is incorrect! No link between Caltrans spraying and PG&E other than poles in Caltrans right of way. There certainly was community organizing and an effort spearheaded by Californians for Alternatives to Toxics and me as director, which position I still hold. A halt to PG&E spraying on private residential lands held at least 25 years. Time to renew it. Reporter or you should call me.

The last year or so, there has been no prior notification for brushing our roads for their access and now leaving the brush when they used to chip it. I’m compelled to put up cables with no locks and “no trespassing” signs .
With this spraying which will occur directly over our open spring, I’m compelled to call the water board. What do you think ?

I am glad to see they have the following parameters… Particularly the one that states: “DO NOT SPRAY WITHOUT PERMISSION”
“ DO NOT SPRAY WITHIN 500 FEET OF A SCHOOL/DAYCARE
DO NOT SPRAY WITHIN 100 FEET OF AN ORCHARD/VINEYARD
DO NOT SPRAY WITHIN 50 FOOT OF A WELL
DO NOT SPRAY WHEN WINDS ARE 10 MPH AND ABOVE
DO NOT SPRAY IN TEMPERATURES ABOVE 85 DEGREES
DO NOT SPRAY WITHIN USFS
DO NOT SPRAY WHEN IT IS RAINING

DO NOT SPRAY DIRECTLY INTO WATER BOTH STANDING OR RUNNING
DO NOT SPRAY IF RUNOFF IS POSSIBLE”

Yes, Dottie, i was going to comment on that. Chances are you’d need to be home to stop them… they might ignore signs. But if you met them at your driveway which was blocked off with a vehicle and said simply, “Nope, you don’t have permission to spray here,” they’d have to go away. It’s not violent, it’s not illegal, and it’s not that hard. Just an unrequested hassle.

what a contrast when looking at cannabis regulations (for growing plants v destroying the planet).I worked with a fellow who got an abatement for a 100 year old redwood chicken coup near a seasonally dry class 3 stream, aka no water running. Write letters and send emails, if that’s your thing. Chant slogans and carry signs. Prepare for battle. All will be ineffectual, though; anyone in any position to stop them gives not one fuck about you or me.

I find it pretty comical that as soon as herbicide is mentioned, every Karen and their house cat jumps to assume it is roundup.. there are several alternative methods to round up on the market that work equally as well. When utilized at a proper mixed rate which I can assure you no homeowner utilizes. The exposure is quite minimal.

Call them on Monday! let’s get this stopped before they get started. Humboldt County has banned spraying, and PGE has chosen to interpret our spray ban as only applying to County lands. (Puns intended, but let’s stop these thugs).
PGE has right of way across hundreds of miles of private lands. That right-of-way DOES NOT grant them the right to spray unlss you allow them. BUt the way PGE operates is you have to stop them or they will go ahead. This is kind of like PGE saying, “I’m going to rob this bank unless you tell me I can’t.” They operate on the date-rape principle.
If we do not say no, they will assert that they can. Our public agencies are here to stop this kind of thuggery. But we have to ask them to.

I wonder if their “contractors” have a list/map of where wells, orchards or any other sensitive locations are? Davy Tree already have us tagged as assholes! That’s a good sign!

If you have a distribution line that runs on your property, call PGE’s vegetation Management Supervisor, ERIC HAGGERTY (707)273-3382

If you have a high-voltage transmission line across your property, call PGE Supervisor AMANDA HANS (707) 499-3456

1).Tell them you will not allow spraying on your property,

2). And tell them that you REQUIRE PGE to contact you before entering your property, any time, for any reason.

3). Tell them you want your property FLAGGED in their system and entry without contact is a trespass and you will document it as such.

4).Tell them to cancel this spray program.

As announced on KMUD this morning, THERE IS A MEETING SUNDAY (10/2) AT 5PM ON THE GARBERVILLE TOWN SQUARE to discuss and strategize about the long and short term ways to prevent this poisoning of the land. SPREAD THE WORD!!!

This is so wrong. I remember when I first moved here (23 yrs ago) My kids and I who live in Shelter Cove were picking blackberries in Briceland. I have always picked wild blackberries as a kid in Eureka. The couple came up and said that some company had just sprayed poison. I thank those people and we dumped our berries and went home. Pls stop spraying it is wrong besides killing our insects, wildlife, domestic and now humans.

It makes you wonder if PGE will be spraying around all those power poles down at the Community Park, Community Park Farm, Tooby Park and along the South Fork Eel down to Kimtu?

It’s marked as such on the map. If you have google earth open it and then click on the linked map pic of salmon creek. Then you can zoom around and check all marked sites in Humboldt. I suspect not all sites considered are marked..

because this tiny place on god’s green earth is the only place where water quality matters and that’s why you can feel comfortable lecturing us about our water quality while you make motors for speed boats that race on california’s largest natural lake that was once pristine?
or am i missing something?

Yes, you are missing something, like the fact I do not “make motors for speed boats that race on california’s largest natural lake…”!

Let me ask you ‘ernestine’, if “this tiny place on god’s green earth is the only place where water quality matters”, then why on earth do people grow non-Indigenous plants everywhere in this “tiny place”, that use up all the Indigenous resources, harm wildlife habitat and water quality, all in the name of what, hypocrisy? Because that’s all you seem to be shoveling with your post!

On the map,do pins indicate areas to be sprayed?
I ask, because several appear to be in Trinity County, which has an ordinance declaring herbicide a public nuisance.

I called pge directly and informed them that I am highly allergic to many herbicides, so they do not have my permission to spray on my property. They started a claim process and are calling back on Monday. Not sure if it will do any good, but at least it is fully documented and the customer service representative seemed very concerned… maybe if enough people call it could spark change.

I also sent an email to the governor and many environmental organizations about the ultra sensitive watersheds that could be affected by this.

Shame on P.G. & E. for using herbicides……they should be using pesticides to get rid of the underlying problem, the human pest, the cause of ALL the problems.

Verizon sprays so much killer around their building in Alderpoint nothing sprouts for 4-5 years. DEAD!
it runs off and goes down the ditch and kills everything there also.

You want to stop this ? You don’t want PF&E to spray??

YOU NEED TO CLEAR AND SCRAPE TO DIRT A 11-12ft PERIMETER AROUND THE POWER POLE ON YOUR PROPERTY OR ALL THE POLES YOU SEE. Then it’s a moot point, no spray needed.

Be proactive people. Didn’t Tim McCay or PT Brucker or Gregg king teach you anything all these yrs. BE PROACTIVE AND NOT SO REACTIVE. Then work to stop them from spraying all together.

The current environmental protection groups are too reactive nowadays and not as inclusive. We need to get back to our proactive inclusive roots folks!

Taking the time to manually remove vegetation around power poles and manual removal of listed weed species within right of ways and areas in maps provided would be proactive. PGE often sends consultants to map listed weeds, telling contractors where to spray. If you eliminate excess vegetation around power poles and listed weeds in the right of way, your land might not be targeted.

If folks have additional questions or would like a copy of the KML map, feel free to email [email protected]

It requires the Google Earth app to be viewed.

I seem to recall that there was a person or people that sawed into those power poles that were installed up Salmon Creek. I forget what they called him. Woodpecker or something like that.
Maybe he was right.

Post every pole on your property with “Do not spray, no pongas pesticida”. Call PG&E and everyone referenced in “onlooker’s” 2 earlier comments. PG&E and their contractors can continue to string trim around poles instead of applying herbicides.
When I use the google earth map, all I see are the yellow pins, the targets on private property. How can I see the red pins, on public property?

Is there a way to know?

Good question, but no way of knowing cause it is mostly people using it around homes and private businesses.

I consider this to be chemical warfare attack…We said, if Agent Orange kills plants then it will also kill people. The government disagreed.
