A woman is on her way to the hospital in Eureka via an ambulance after crashing and being ejected from a vehicle on Hwy 36 west of Hydesville about 7:54 p.m., according to a compilation of reports from the scanner and the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page.

The CHP page reports the woman was driving a Honda CRV that went off Hwy 36 and came to rest on the passenger side.

Passersby found the woman lying in the roadway after apparently being ejected from the vehicle.

According to one report, her dog was lost in the accident. We’ll update with more details if we learn more.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

UPDATE 8:58 p.m.: According to an update from the CHP page, witnesses said that the vehicle was occupied by a small white dog that was last seen running westbound on Hwy 36.

UPDATE 10:21 p.m.: The CHP is now reporting this is a major injury accident.

According to Tom Stokesberry, an off duty Engine Captain for the US Forest Service who was one of the first on the scene confirmed this was a single vehicle rollover with ejection. He said, “I will say it was a collective effort of the people that were first on scene, Fortuna Police Department, Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department, CHP Southern Trinity Area Rescue Ambulance and City Ambulance.”

Tom Stokesberry, an EMT, photographed walking back to his vehicle after the injured woman was put in the ambulance.

Too fast or beyond your capabilities? Lots of deer in that area , just missed a 3 pointer last week in that area. Pro-tip , just hit the animal , drive right thru it. I’ve driven thru them at 100 mph , totalled car but no injuries to driver.

Well, to be fair, driving too fast is only one way to drive beyond your capabilities… a front wheel coming off might whip you around pretty quick. Seatbelts help keep you in the driving position. It doesn’t take much to move you out of reach of the wheel and pedals. It’s scary-easy to pop out of a car rolling over.

Some Karens consider too fast as anything over the posted speed limited, which isn’t beyond any good racers capabilities, i could do 65 on riding lawn mower down 36 safely, crack me up. Remember being a kid doing 140 on that stretch everyday , 30 years later still alive accident free , the horror lol.

Not advice bud, PRO-TIP, crack me up. I’m the reason new cars have limiters, atleast some do 155 mph, still pretty lame.

My niece was killed in Nevada last year by a girl with a cat in her car. Of course it was all the cats fault.
I’m so sick of excuses for bad driving !

Poor woman, this sounds awful but it looks like she’s going to be okay, and fortunately no one else was hurt. Hope her dog is found unharmed, please keep us posted.

Was it STAR or Fortuna Ambulance that scooped her up??? Seems strange to me that Southern Trinity would come all the way down from Mad River to pick her up!!!

STAR was transporting another patient and arrived on scene. Once City was there they took over. Happy coincidence.

Another nasty crash. I sure hope the woman will survive her major injuries and be fine again. Sad that her little white dog ran off, but it was probably just scared during the accident. I sure hope someone will find and return her pet. A big thank you to EMT and off duty Engine Captain Tom Stokesberry and the other first responders at the scene. Our hero’s!

You are very right and I need to apologize for generalizing my statement. I felt so disappointed in remarks that I replied without thought. Maybe exactly what they were looking for, unfortunately I dove in. You did bring it to my attention and I thank you for that. From here on out I just will not read or join in negative and hurtful assumptions

That’s a Humboldt county dog, born and raised. He knows you always flee the scene of an accident in this county. Probably hiding out on the river bar till he sobers up.

The only way you get ejected is not wearing seatbelts. Karma!

Or wearing it improperly.

She is alive and well because the seatbelt. I’m very surprised at how some assume the dog was an “excuse” or as they know anything about the situation. Maybe you should look into what the meaning of “karma” actually is. Seems to me karma was on her side!!

Seat belt. Really, seat belt. And animals should be secured also. Hope she recovers and the dog is found. But again, seat belt.

I watched a truck door open on a curve, the door popped open and the driver fell out. We provided assistance and he was completely sober but not wearing his seat belt.
