Former Ukiah Police Sergeant Cops a Plea–May Only Face Two Years Probation

Ukiah Police Sergeant Kevin Murray

Kevin Murray, the former Ukiah police sergeant facing seven felonies and one misdemeanor, pled no contest to one felony and one misdemeanor at a pretrial conference late Thursday afternoon. He has not been sentenced, but he is facing anywhere between what the judge hinted would be the likely outcome of two years felony probation or the possibility of three or four years in jail. The date for his jury trial, originally set for July 18, has been vacated.  Presiding Judge Ann Moorman took the bench in Courtroom H, where Judge Carly Dolan usually presides, and ordered Murray to report to a probation officer within three days. Murray has served a total of 60 days in custody, and Moorman told the court she was “not inclined to add custodial time,” indicating that she prefers the option of supervised probation.

Murray was originally charged with committing five felonies on November 25, 2020, but pled no contest to one that did not appear in the original charging documents: that of willfully engaging in intimidation to dissuade a female victim of a crime from reporting the crime. The victim in this case is a woman identified only as “S.Y.” MendoFever previously reported that the City of Ukiah settled with S.Y. for $250

,000, and quoted then-Chief Noble Waidelich as saying that the settlement “admits no liability for the City or its employees.” Waidelich himself is being investigated by the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office on separate assault charges.

Murray also pled no contest Thursday to a misdemeanor charge for false imprisonment of a woman identified only as Jane Doe, sometime between June 1 and July 31 of 2014. He was originally charged with a forcible rape alleged to have taken place on June 1 of that year.

The original five felonies of November 25 were one charge of sexual battery, and two charges each of first-degree burglary and burglary with others present. He also faced a felony charge of forced oral copulation, alleged to have occurred on April 10 of 2014. His original misdemeanor charge was possession of a controlled substance. Because the sex crimes were dismissed, Murray will not have to register as a sex offender.

However, his status as a felon would mean that he would have a strike against him, which would have sentencing repercussions if he were to be charged with any future felonies. It also means he will never be allowed to own a firearm, ammunition, or a variety of other weapons for the rest of his life. Murray had previous difficulties with this requirement early last year, when he was ordered to surrender his firearms and only gave up four handguns and a rifle with a scope. At that time, he was facing an allegation of committing a sexual assault while armed with an assault weapon.

A month after he submitted paperwork to the court saying he had surrendered all of his weapons, investigators discovered that he had hidden an assault rifle at his father-in-law’s house in Lake County. This led to Mendocino County  District Attorney David Eyster requesting that Murray’s bail for charges of rape and forcible oral copulation be recalled and increased from $200,000 to $500,000.

Though Murray was fired by the Ukiah Police Department in late January of last year, his relationship with the the city and the police department is not over  yet. Former UPD officer Isabel Siderakis is suing Murray, the city, and the police department in civil court on four counts of sexual harassment and hostile work environment, discrimination, retaliation, and failure to prevent discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. Siderakis now works for the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office and was present in court all afternoon during the pretrial conference. It is unclear at this time what bearing Murray’s status as a felon will have on the upcoming civil case Siderakis is bringing against him.

Murray brought considerable legal firepower to the criminal matter leading to Thursday’s plea arrangement. Court documents indicate that he is represented by five attorneys, led by Stephen Gallenson, who sat beside him in court on Thursday. The prosecutor is Deputy Mendocino County District Attorney Heidi Larson.

Murray is scheduled to be sentenced on August 24.

Seems relaxing to be a sex offender in California, add a badge and you don’t even see real trouble.

His sentence is as much of a joke as Mendo Justice is. He’ll be back to make more lives miserable really soon. You can only blame having enough $ to hire 5 attorneys and the judge for being so lenient. How disgusting…

Sounds pretty lenient, all right…

Someone is paying for the five attorneys, and I doubt he is paying for all of them all by himself.

His silence is definitely golden in this case.

His former employer is probably footing the bill…

And a substitute judge seems odd…

Why the recusal?

Murray must know where all the bodies are buried… (Figuratively)…

Seems like a lot of serious charges to get just a slap on the wrist for…

As a felon, he isn’t allowed to have guns. He already tried to hide one, as the article states. He’s going to reoffend in some way soon enough. Hopefully not at the expense of another victim.

I totally agree…

But what I don’t understand is, how will it not be at the expense of another victim, if, and when, “such a person”, re-offends?

( I don’t suspect “if”, I suspect “when”…)

This slap on the wrist will only embolden him to continue, full throttle, in his nefarious ways…

Maybe to even to “up his game”.

…and some wonder why Ukiah is going to Hell in a hand basket. They give $200k to a guy walking around naked in front of businesses in broad daylight on LSD and now reward one of their finest with a free pass to go screw up again! At least they got an In n Out burger now! ?

I think the entire legal system in Mendocino County needs to be looked into. All the corruption. Has UPD been protecting its soiled officers by themselves?. Has probation been helping them? Are the judges involved? It seems to be a pit of sewage. If this guy was not a former upd officer but say from a rural area and committed the same offenses would the punishment be the same. I doubt it!

Have the women he assaulted signed off on this deal?
This is disgusting.

Justice might dissuade other would-be offenders. A slap-on-the-wrist certainly will not.

If he’s guilty of the original charges this is not justice, and this is not right.

The best thing for this guy would be to spend some time in the pokey. Experiencing some pokey!!! This doesn’t help women think they can trust law enforcement.

Exactly.
Any time a cop goes off the rails they should get double time.
They are the only people that stop women with their red lights on dark roads.

Lets remember the Ukiah PD chief was just fired for “undisclosed ” investigation. Also Bailey Comer, child porn case, son of Mendo sheriff deputy, who’s viewing practices were discretely ignored for two years. Tip of the iceberg.

There’s no mention of his POST certification being revoked. He could apply for another LE job. Here’s hoping that anyone he applies to catches his felonious background.

Only if you pose as a cop and rape. If you are a cop and rape, no pro-blamo.

Cops-a-plenty! Maybe he copped a feel too? What other job allows you to get off so easy (sic) and with such minimal consequence? This is an example of why people hate police

Mendocino County DA has to go. This man is not a defender or protector of women in this county. He made a deal with this POS Cop who used his badge to rape women on duty, beat victims and rob them. This DA dropped the rape, burglary, forced copulation charges in exchange for a felony charge of intimidating the witness which wasn’t even part of why he was arrested to begin with. What a sweet deal this District Attorney did for this cop so that he would NOT have to ever register as a sex offender. Imagine! This guy could work with your kids. The females of this county deserves much better than this joke of a man for District Attorney. This goes hand in hand with the investigation this DA is under for his own activities involving his ruining the career and life of a female officer after she reported domestic violence by her partner who was a cop. This DA took the DV victims gun rights away so that she lost her LEO career saying he believed the DV victim lied. Now there’s another victim to the same male officer who this DA protected. This DA needs to be investigated for his own criminal activities in these and other cases since he’s been in office.

So a quick question, if the DA is still in office and is found guilty for his crimes along with this POS Leo, can’t all of the prosecution and arrests by both the turds be overturned. I guess this would include all the bad apples he in the county!

I am pretty sure that a person cannot be tried for the same crime twice. So what’s done is done as far as Murray is concerned. No matter how many others are drawn into this maelstrom, his “conviction” (more like an exoneration for heinous crimes) will stand. No matter how bothered the citizens are who paid his salary through their taxes, he will receive this gift from our legal system. Interesting.
