Arcata Fire District Launches ‘Rural Address Sign Project’

This is a press release from the Arcata Fire District:

Do you live in the Arcata Fire District on a rural road and down a long driveway? If so, it may be difficult for Emergency Services or the Utility Companies to find you. The Arcata Fire District, in partnership with the Arcata Volunteer Firefighters Association, have obtained grants through the California Fire Foundation and Pacific Gas & Electric Company to supply rural residents with FREE, easily identifiable, reflective address signs.

You may have already seen the green address placards along county roads around the District. The Arcata Fire District wants to ensure that as many homes as possible have this type of address sign, well displayed, and visible. Also, as necessary, the Fire District may add color accents to signs to indicate a rural water supply or driveways that are long, narrow, or difficult for fire apparatus turn-around.  This will assist us in determining the emergency response to those residents and minimize any delays.

Any Arcata Fire District rural area resident needing an address placard can have them supplied and installed at no expense.  Fire District representatives will be available to visit with residents or neighborhood groups regarding this program. If you are interested in finding out more, please email [email protected], or visit the District’s web page, www.arcatafire.org/rural-address-signs  or call the station at (707) 825-2000.

I think those address signs will be real life savers in an emergency or even someone trying to find your house. I hope all the people living in areas where they are needed will take advantage of them. Some will probably say they are a waste of money, but will quickly change their minds when their home catches on fire and they don’t have an address sign.

It’s always funny that people take the 1 in over a billion route when trying to justify such a large waste of finances. The money they wasted here could pay for another fire fighter. Fun fact, rural residents don’t live like city people for a reason. If they wanted “people to be able to easily find them” they’d live in the city. Funny how that logic just escapes flatlanders!

Somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed,
This is the Arcata Fire District, which includes McKinleyville. It’s not Island Mountain.
I did just look up the actual chances of a home burning down, it’s one in 3000 nationwide. In our sadly toasty conditions these days out west, it’s much higher.
Also, if someone is having an emergency it makes it easier for the first responders to come and save your ass.

Just Sayin, I am not a flatlander. Have lived in the mountains for many years. The money is not being wasted! If those rural residents don’t want the address sign, they are not forced to have one installed. I wonder who they will put the blame on when their home burns flat.

This was instituted by the Fruitland Ridge Volunteer Fire Dep’t. several years ago. It saved time and lives, when emergency services didn’t have to waste precious time by hunting down an address…
