This is a press release from the City of Arcata:

The Environmental Services Department is seeking community members with interest in small-scale organic farming to participate in Bayside Park Farm’s Volunteer Program.

Bayside Park Farm is a three-acre vegetable farm located in the City of Arcata’s Bayside Park, which is dedicated to cultivating connections between the community and sustainable agriculture. The Bayside Park Farm share program was the first Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program in Arcata and has provided the community with local, organic produce for 29 years.

In order to participate in Bayside Park Farm’s Volunteer Program, volunteers make a 2.5 month commitment to working 3-6 hours a week in exchange for fresh vegetables and hands-on training in organic farming.

In addition to general planting, pruning and harvesting skills, volunteers will learn other useful skills including sowing seeds in a propagation house, mending and preparing beds for planting, transplanting crops, growing crops from seed, growing and pruning tomato crops, and irrigation techniques.

Volunteer applications are being accepted now through August 31. For the spring and summer sessions, please apply as soon as possible to be considered. For more information on Bayside Park Farm’s Volunteer Program, visit cityofarcata.org/440/Bayside-Park-Farm, email [email protected] or call (707) 822-8184.

Have you been to the park farm? It’s a nice park, it’s not a real farm. It could never sustain itself financially

This is a great example of showing our community the how to and what for of small scale organic sustainable local food production!! FYI there’s no farm that’s financially sustainable. The lie that a farm or anything to be sustainable must
Make a Monetary Profit is just that. A lie that ignores the outrageous theft of the Truly and Only Sustainable System Humanity Will Ever Know!
And that sustainable system is MOTHER EARTH our Planet!
So ya know….small scale food production is sustainable. Once you’ve got your companion planting, moon phase planting and weeding, composting and cover cropping together yes it’s sustainable and not too hard to grow a lot of food in your yard where the lawn used to be!
Yay Gardens?

Ya I love Bayside Park, I volunteered there on and off for several years. It’s a great city asset to expose people to organic growing and give people a chance to get their hands dirty. But it’s just not true that no farms are financially sustainable. We have tons of small veggie farms in this area that are ecologically and economically sustainable.

Because of Bayside park’s mission and the disconnect between the county fiscal year and the annual farming season this park can’t function as an actual farm. It’s a beautiful place though.

Anyone know who’s heading it up these days?
