Ukiah Police Sergeant Faces Charges of Sexual Battery, Burglary, and Drug Possession

Ukiah Police Sergeant Kevin Murray

Ukiah Police Sergeant Kevin Murray

According to charging documents filed by the Mendocino County District Attorney, Ukiah Police Sergeant Kevin Murray stands accused of several crimes, including burglary, sexual battery, possession of methamphetamine, and a violation of civil rights stemming from excessive use of force.

The charges are a result of one or more incidents that took place at Ukiah’s Super 8 Motel at 693 South Orchard Avenue on November 25, 2020, and the crimes are “connected together in their commission.”

The criminal complaint indicates that Murray faces two burglary charges in the first degree, claiming he entered a hotel room occupied by a female with the “intent to commit larceny or a felony therein.”

If the two counts of burglary prove true, Murray faces special allegations that assert these counts would be considered violent felonies, because the burglaries were conducted while the motel room was occupied.

The criminal complaint alleges that on November 25 Murray also committed the crime of sexual battery, a felony, in which Murray forced the woman to touch his “penis against her will, for the purpose of sexual arousal, sexual gratification, or sexual abuse.”

The criminal complaint also accuses Murray of the violation of civil rights, a felony, which claims Murray willfully and unlawfully implied or expressed force to intimidate “another person in the free exercise of civil rights because of actual or perceived characteristics of the victim, to wit, gender, race or ethnicity, and/or nationality.”

The criminal complaint also alleges Murray was found to be in unlawful possession of methamphetamine.

Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Captain Greg Van Patten confirmed that Murray had been taken into custody on these charges.

This criminal complaint is not the first time Kevin Murray’s professional conduct has been called into question. A civil rights lawsuit filed by Ukiah resident Christopher Rasku alleges on October 18, 2018, Murray entered Rasku’s home unlawfully, knocking him unconscious, and proceeded to punch and kick him, causing broken ribs, a punctured lung, and nerve damage. Murray allegedly wrote a falsified police report claiming Rasku started the encounter. The civil rights lawsuit alleges Murray gained unlawful entry to Rasku’s residence and used excessive force.

Ukiah Police Department Chief Justin Wyatt said, “The Ukiah Police Department is aware of a pending criminal case against Kevin Murray, who has served as a sergeant with the Ukiah Police Department. Mr. Murray has been on administrative leave since December 1st.

Regarding the city’s and UPD’s knowledge of the charges, Chief Wyatt said, “The City of Ukiah and the Ukiah Police Department have supported and cooperated with the criminal investigation since the onset, and the City is conducting its own administrative review.”

Chief Wyatt said his comments were limited because “this is a pending personnel matter, no further information may be disclosed at this time.”

Chief Wyatt assured the community that “The Ukiah Police Department and City of Ukiah take seriously and follow proper protocols regarding complaints against officers, internal investigations into possible misconduct, and the law governing personnel matters.”

UPDATE: Former Sergeant Accused of Robbery, Sexual Battery, and Drug Possession ‘No Longer Employed’, Says Ukiah Police Chief Justin Wyatt

What irks me most about Biden is his making sure that none of the 100,009 men and women who to there own detriment risked everything to help us, and we’re all promised after ten years n more that they could escape their war torn home and come to America. We left them ! Our Governmentourm which Biden was the driving force in the end that just threw them to the Taliban. Marked for death for helping us and we abandoned them

Why didn’t you use his booking photo? We all know how the media loves to show these guys in the best light possible. I want to see better next time. Using this picture is such a kick in the face to all his victims. SHOW his booked photo. And I’m sure Kym is going to say she had to use this because they didn’t provide a booking photo. And that was for a reason. What person arrested on these charges doesn’t get booked correctly, with photos and the lot.

Last week I was driving north on 101. I was going 5 over the speed limit in the left lane. A car approach me quickly from behind and got right on my ass, like right on my ass. I assumed it was another person wanting to go 15 over, and I decided I would get over into the left lane when it nice and convenient for me.

When I finally did get over I saw it was a sheriffs deputy that had been tailgating me. The deputy Immediately charged forward on got within 1 foot of the vehicle that had been in front of me in the left lane. He stayed 1 – 2 feet off their bumper until they moved to the left lane, then proceeded to speed up to about 85, no lights, no siren.

I think the deputy should be removed from law enforcement.

Police do this sometimes to intimidate the person in the car they are tailgating because sometimes the person doesn’t realize it’s the police and they speed up to try to get the person to back off. Then they wind up with a ticket. It happened to my son’s friend, a relatively new driver.

I’ve had this happen just south of Laytonville, very dark and rainy night, the sngle lane just before it opens to double lanes…that spot where sometimes there might be an elk in the road….I was blown away by the behavior of this CHP. His beams in my mirror while he rode my bumper- at just barely below speed limit- made it hard to see the road as well as I liked…It was dangerous behavior. Exactly the opposite of what he should do. Yes- it was intimidation, looking for me to flinch and then pull me over. I hate bad cops. It’s no wonder some police stations got attacked this last summer…

The corrupt court system and justice system in Mendocino County is ridiculous it infiltrates all branches. Him being in front of the judges and known to be a perpetrator and a violent person with abhorrent tendencies he should have never been allowed to keep his badge. And here he goes out victimizing someone again. She came forward…how many never do? How many get victimized by the system if they try to speak up? Just them good ol boys! Protect and to serve. What is that? Just the other day I contacted some local police for support. I’m not even going to say who. I’m dealing with them with the situation and I’m telling them that I have genuine fears they laughed at me. When I said you know nothing about me and this is a very stressful situation. They laughed again and said oh do you know how much bullshit we hear from everyone everyday we really don’t care. Then threatened me when I voiced concerns and needs. As they wear their thin bandanas over their faces way closer than 6 feet. There is no protection or justice in Mendocino county im sorry…but thats the REALITY.

I am certain this fool is one of the mob that was in front of my home last year slamming a drunk woman’s head into a police suv so hard it left a dent; all because she wouldn’t spread her legs far enough while bent over the cruiser (she was stumbling drunk) and then laughing like a bunch of little frat boys. Disgusting and ILLEGAL behavior. Then attempted to intimidate myself and my husband because we called them out for acting so unprofessionally. 10 cops for 2 passengers on a dui stop at 1am. . . The only violence was against the poor woman, she was not combative let alone violent in any way.
I’ve never been so ashamed in my life by those that are supposed to serve and PROTECT.

This guy is obviously disgusting. Why isn’t he in jail with the rest of the druggies and violent offenders? He gets protection but the citizens within Ukiah didn’t?!

And yes, personnel matters are often protected by civil rights laws, which is why town boards will disappear into the back room when discussing personnel matters. I can’t believe the low mentality of some folks.

Unfortunately, these situations typically end up as “he said, she said” because of no actual proof of the complaint. As for the meth, unless he is using and tests positive, he could easily explain it away. I am not saying he is innocent, or guilty; but he will likely walk if there is no confession, witnesses, or video. Cover your ass and record all interactions with law enforcement, it is your right and the only way to protect yourself.

FINNALY an officer charged with t h civil rights violations…I’m loving this lol….he needs to be made a marter. Try him to the full extent of the law.His actions are distasteful and atrocious, and are a prime example to those criminals in bodied in positions of power and authority, to heed warning when engaging in criminal activity. And maybe have the epiphany they actually do not reside above the law in which they so activity enforce on others. I hope he does years in a penitentiary…much deserved

Remember? He had all those assault rifles and high caliber weapons he was driving around with while he was shaking the junkies down and stealing their drugs which he would share with his wife who said they could have sex as long as she was knocked out. Look up Gunderson/Blue Lake. I think that’s how you spell it. I forget the Redway cops name but he had a similar story where it was his lifestyle to steal drugs from junkies, steal pounds from growers and rough people up along the way. This guy in Mendo just got caught. This type of behavior from law enforcement has been going on forever. That said most of the officers in our community are good people just trying to do their job. I have respect for law enforcement and I’m thankful they’re there. It’s a thankless job that pays well for a Humboldt occupation. If you grew up here and weren’t into higher education working for the local departments provides you with the opportunity to support your family without being a “criminal”. Since the Emerald Triangle is full of criminals it’s a fine line many local officers walk. If you grew up here more than likely you have some friends and family members that are involved in the underworld. This is why so many crossover to the dark side. They grew up in a criminal minded community……….

At this point, all police officers need to be drug tested! At every professional level of occupation, from hauling timber to race horses, are being tested for drug’s. But the only occupation at a professional level that doesn’t test for drug’s and is issued a sidearm for work is the police. It’s time for change, steroids, meth and prescription pills are notorious in these departments. The locker room junkies still at it!

Internal affairs. Haha dont make me laugh so hard. They have barely taken any cops off the st in any of the cases that I’ve ever read about. They are humans too, subject to all the same vices as the rest of us. And their union is extremely well connected. The de-fund the police movement is poorly worded but the thought behind it has a lot of potential. They need to vet officers better. More of a mental health focus when hiring them. And if they know that there’s a bad one amongst them, figure out how to get them out. Community trust and policing a community go hand in hand.
Personally, I dont mind living in a place with almost no drama and an almost inherent distrust of the police… Its a great neighborhood.

As a forty five year resident of Mendocino and Southern Humboldt County, and a servant of the community for over half that time, I have never been so discouraged against continuing public service. This has nothing to do with Sergeant Murray, this has to do with the obvious angst of the commenters on this site (not limited to just this site). Maybe it is the ease of access to the bully pulpit that we refer to as “comment”, and the release that it it provides to those who don’t think that they have a voice. Well, if you really want your voice to be heard then get out there and vote, contribute, connect, and invest. Believe it or not that is exactly what the vast majority of your public servants are trying to do. The rest will be sorted out in time.

There so much that bothers me about this particular case. Not only just with this Mr. Murray. Fired from his job as sergant. How can it happen that he made it to that rank, in what span of time did he rise up in the Dept? What was his previous job and did he grow up here? Just asking. Who was his supervisor at UPD? Who was captain was his previous job something to do within one of the branches of our military. Heads up folks! This type of animal doesn’t/ can’t just stop. His behavior is cognitively in capable.of simply refraining from this behavior. This is a crime that after enough practice is done feels good
badge or no badge his ego has him convinced he’s gonna get away with it. Which he basically did. And these cases are only the ones we know about.
