Brenda Tuxford Gallery Rings out 2020 with Artists’ Challenge

The 2020 Artists’ Challenge at the Brenda Tuxford Gallery is moving online! 315 intimately scaled artworks will be on view in a virtual gallery at www.inkpeople.org from Friday, Dec. 4 through Saturday, Dec. 19. This year, 21 area artists responded to the annual challenge: create 15 original works of art in just one month. This will be the largest Artists’ Challenge exhibition in recent memory — as befits a year in which we’ve all been spending a lot of time at home.

“COVID-19 has had some unexpected benefits: this year’s wealth of Artists’ Challenge artworks is one of them,” Libby Maynard, executive director of Ink People Center for the Arts said. “What a delightful and wonderful display of Humboldt artists’ vision.”

Artworks on view represent styles ranging from October Mintey’s intimate mushroom watercolors to Reuben Mayes’ exuberant expressionist painting and Ashley Rose’s bedazzled multimedia. Intricate collages by Tess Yinger float tiny geometric volumes over inkblot landscapes, while etched line drawings on glass by Robot Adams featuring conjoined bunny twins, a reverse mermaid and a cat astronaut split the difference between surreal and whimsical. The mother-daughter team of Native artisans behind California Native Glass contributed a special collection of fused glass ornaments that catch the winter sun.

Featured artists include: Eloisa Caro-Garcia, Jenny Downs, Soni Epperson, Morgan Eubank, Julie E. Hodge, Kjerstine Jennings, Laura Keenados, Claire MacKenzie, Libby Maynard, Lydia Morris, Kaitland Ocheltree, Patricia Sennott, Mir de Silva, Monica Topping, and James F. Woglom.

All works of art will be available for sale, with two-thirds of the sale price going to the artists and the remainder going to support programs of the Ink People Center for Arts. Prices are set by size, with artworks that are 3 x 5” priced at $24; 5 x 7:” $45; 8 x 10:” $60; and 11 x 14:” $75.
