Facial Coverings Mandatory in Humboldt County Starting Friday

The Humboldt County Health Officer has issued a Health Order requiring the use of facial coverings to further manage the spread of COVID-19. The order will be in effect starting at 12:01 a.m. Friday, April 24, and until it is modified or rescinded by the Health Officer.
The Order states people must wear a facial covering before they enter:
- Any indoor facility except for their own residence
- Any enclosed space
- Any outdoor space where individuals are unable to maintain at all times a distance of six feet from others.
“Facial coverings are meant to protect the public from the user in case the user is infected and not yet displaying symptoms,” the order states. “Facial coverings used in conjunction with physical distancing of at least six feet and frequent handwashing may reduce the risk of transmission.” Read the full order here: humboldtgov.org/DocumentCenter/View/85482
Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Teresa Frankovich said requiring facial coverings in public is a necessary first step as shelter-in-place restrictions are eased and movement increases within our community. “Your facial covering protects me and my facial covering protects you,” she said. “Having everyone using facial coverings will help to make us all safer as we move forward.”
Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal said, “This is the key step in reopening our businesses while continuing to protect the members of our community from the virus. Local law enforcement will be actively engaged in educating the public on the importance of facial coverings.”
Facial coverings should not be placed on children under the age of 2, people who have difficulty breathing or anyone who cannot remove the material without assistance.
Community members are asked not to purchase medical grade surgical or N95 respirator masks, which should be reserved for health care workers. Facial coverings should be regularly washed and sanitized, or changed, and wearers are advised to wash their hands after touching or adjusting their facial coverings.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers these facial covering guidelines:
- fits snugly but comfortably against the side of the face
- is secured with ties or ear loops
- includes multiple layers of fabric
- allows for breathing without restriction
- is able to be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to shape.

Rod- Fully agree with you. I’ve been wearing the masks and gloves for a month also. Not for me- I’m not worried for myself. But I saw some very scared seniors out shopping- the urgent looks on their faces as they hurriedly grabbed supplies was absolutely heartbreaking…I’m doing it for them.

Well, I was in Hawaii a month ago, and the Hawaiians were already all wearing masks… Dr Frankovich, just exactly who is going to enforce this order, and how? And why so late to the party?
They just started saying “no one in the store, without a mask” in Lakeport, at the Safeway, last Friday. In Hawaii, a month ago, they would only let 50 people in a grocery store, and you had to line up outside until someone left…
Inconsistent policies, unevenly applied, and especially in areas of low infection incidence, make officials look pretty stupid. Our governmental agencies can’t even coordinate between county departments, much less over counties, or statewide.
580 cases in Hawaii, mostly on Oahu. They did a good job of shutting down the state, and it was well coordinated.
In California, our idiot governor spews trash that someone else made up, and our counties can’t administer or coordinate at all! Herd immunity, will result.

I am well but I’ve been wearing a mask in public out of respect for those that are at risk.
I believe the plan is to start opening up our county little by each. If we all do the mask thing then more businesses open and we can get back to life. Wearing a mask is a small price to pay if it means we can resume our lives and our businesses can open.

It behooves all things freedom, to be completely transparent and inform the public about these matters and mandates. This order mandates literally everybody in Humboldt County. The health officer should make it clear that the orders are hers alone, or tell the public on whose behalf she is making this order. The federal government has left it up to state governments, and from there the food chain isn’t being disclosed. Please inform us who the boss is, in this case. We deserve to know who’s calling the shots.
Also, if and when a death is attributed to Covid, it needs to be made clear if the virus was the actual cause of death, or if the deceased simply tested positive post-mortem.

That mask is being worn correctly. The double stitch at the top usually contains some sort of bendable material to form to your nose for a tighter fit. It is a statement of consideration and caring. So, while the HEPA engineered homespun masks look ok on paper , and sound pretty good in theory, the truth is if the government wants to mandate masks be worn unless appropriate masks are provided, most ordinary citizens will just “make do,” which is about effective as doing nothing —which is what we have been doing. The worst part of this whole “flattening the curve” hysteria is that, if an area has not yet been much impacted by covid-19 community spread but has taken measures on it preemptively, then they are going to have damaged the economy before the need arose and, since not matter how “flat” you make the curve, the infection will show up later, they will have to keep the damaging limits until the the infection peaks then. My workplace, however, is interpreting that employees are not required to wear facial coverings inside our building as long as they maintain a six-foot distance from people.
