[UPDATE 5:45 p.m.: Largest Fire in Humboldt County in Over a Year, Says Cal Fire] Fire North of Dinsmore

vegetation fire icon feature Around 3 p.m., Cal Fire dispatchers sent crews to a vegetation fire burning about eight miles north of Dinsmore near Bear Creek Road.

Copter 205 responded to the fire as did several dozers and engines.

We haven’t been able to reach Cal Fire for information on the incident. We’ll update when we can.

UPDATE 5:45 p.m.: According Cal Fire Battalion Chief Paul Savona, this is the largest fire in Humboldt County since January of 2019. He said the fire which was first reported at 2:55 p.m. has already reach 13 acres.

“An out of county Cal Fire helicopter, Copter 205, came to the incident,” he said.
“Five engines, two dozers, two handcrews have been dispatched.”  He noted that Cal Fire had assistance from Carlotta Fire, Bridgeville Fire, Southern Trinity Volunteers, and Six Rivers National Forest.”

“[The fire] is not contained,” he told us. “The cause is under investigation.”

He added, “Cal Fire requests people conducting pile burning follow the terms of their permit. Have somebody in attendance and have water available.”

Savona pointed out that people can be civilly or criminally responsible for damage caused by the escaped controlled burn. He noted that citations were issued for the last escaped controlled burn in Shelter Cove.  So please be careful, he requested.

You wont be saying that if your neighborhood burns down. Obviously a fire can take off right now.
Theres dust on the roads. To me for this time of year and not having enough rain yet, that says no burning til it rains.
There are too many idiots who have no idea how to build and watch a burn pile.
Its not fair to our volunteer firefighters. Ban the burns now!

Lots of folks i know have been calling in and asking for the ban to be re-instated. Those who understand fire, volunteer fire depts, community, neighbors caring about neighbors. ..you know that whole thing of wanting kids to not get burned up and/or lose their homes.

As a volunteer firefighter i say burn baby burn! Don’t leave the fuel until fire season. Responsibly eliminate the fuel by burning it now.
Burn it today! Weather is great. Just follow CalFire’s rules.

Unseasonable dry weather for this time of year. Taller grass and duff is definitely dry enough to carry fire.

Learn not to burn. Too many pyromaniacs in Humboldt. Every try mulching your slash? Keeps the air and water a lot cleaner too! Give it a try, you’ll like it. So will your neighbors and wild animal friends!

Sudden oak death sod

You can rot wood without chipping it. Put it in a pile and put soil and manure on top of it…some people start by digging a bit so they have the soil to put on top of the pile at the end

But if your dirt is too hard for ypu to dig, you can use bagged soil

I see the CDF talking about burn pile protocol, but I don’t see any indication that this is a runaway burn pile. It is certainly surprising and dismaying that we can have a fire like this in mid-February. What a year we’ve got ahead of us.

It’s only 13 acres. It never spread to other properties.

More control burns now.
Do t wait for the fire to come to you.
The stupidity of not allowing natural fire to go had created a unatural place for super fires to happen
