CDC Says California Now Has Confirmed Cases of Coronavirus

Wuhan, China from Wiki Commons
Though none of those affected by the Coronavirus are on the North Coast that we are aware (There are two cases in Southern California), we thought our readers would be interested in the latest update from the CDC.
Press release from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today confirmed additional travel-related infections of 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in the United States, this time in Arizona and California. These patients recently returned to the U.S. from Wuhan, China, where an outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a novel coronavirus has been ongoing since December 2019. This brings the total number of 2019-nCoV infections detected in the United States to five.
Based on the patient’s travel history and symptoms, healthcare professionals suspected 2019-nCoV. Clinical specimens were collected and sent to CDC, where laboratory testing confirmed infection with 2019-nCoV. Investigations are underway to determine where these patients went after returning to the United States and any close contacts who were possibly exposed. CDC teams have been deployed to support these efforts.
This is a rapidly evolving situation, and we are still in the early days of the investigation – both domestically and abroad. CDC continues to monitor the international situation with our teams on the ground in affected countries, as well as domestically in the four states with confirmed cases – Arizona, California, Illinois, and Washington. CDC is leaning forward with an aggressive public health response strategy and working closely with state and local public health authorities to identify potential cases early and make sure patients get the best and most appropriate care.
It is likely there will be more cases reported in the U.S. in the coming days and weeks, likely including person-to-person spread. In previous outbreaks with MERS and SARS, the two other coronaviruses that have jumped the species barrier to cause severe illness in people, person-to-person spread has been seen, including among healthcare workers caring for patients ill with coronavirus infection. This underscores the importance of appropriate precautions in the health care setting as well in homes of people who are infected with 2019-nCoV but who may not be hospitalized. CDC has developed guidance for both situations.
This is a very serious public health situation. We understand that some people are worried about this virus and how it may impact Americans. Outbreaks of new diseases are always of concern – and in today’s connected world, an outbreak anywhere can be a risk everywhere. Risk is dependent on exposure. Someone who is in close contact with a person who is infected with 2019-nCoV will be at greater risk of infection and should take the precautions outlined in CDC’s guidance for preventing spread in homes and communities. While this is a serious public health threat, CDC continues to believe the immediate risk to the U.S. general public is low at this time.
Right now, CDC recommends travelers avoid all nonessential travel to Hubei Province, China. In addition, CDC recommends people traveling to other parts of China practice certain health precautions like avoiding contact with people who are sick and practicing good hand hygiene. For the general public, no additional precautions are recommended at this time beyond the simple daily precautions that everyone should always take. It is currently flu and respiratory disease season, and flu activity is still high and expected to continue for a number of weeks. CDC recommends getting a flu vaccine, taking everyday preventive actions to stop the spread of germs, and taking flu antivirals if prescribed.
As we learn more about this novel coronavirus, we will continue to update our guidance. Please visit the CDC website, which is updated daily, for the latest information related to our response.

Hong Kong & Taiwan have banned travelers who have just been to Wuhan, China.
??Thank you Kym for that information. ????
Is this bug supposed to kill half the planet like the swine flu was supposed to? Or the bird flu? Or can I just eat some chicken noodle soup and sprite?
I like chicken noodle soup, ghost chili salsa and makers mark.
Media hype is just that.
However, the 2019-nCov mortality rate is hovering at 4%, so 1 in 25 are perishing. And no, chicken soup isn’t keeping the sicker survivors alive. Intensive care and mechanical ventilators are. And it’s killing healthy people and the infirm alike at this point.
The alarming issue, is the somewhat indiscriminate mortality (though relatively low rate) combined with obviously high transmission rate (appx 2.5: 1.5-4). If it gets loose as an uncontrolled pandemic, the death rate and demographics will shape the world.
Public health is working hard to prevent that. I wish them luck, and hope a vaccine can protect the health care workers, who have been perishing.
This virus is more akin to SARS, with a much higher (!!) transmission rate, and significantly lower mortality rate.
Wikipedia’s article is well cited and is remaining fairly current.
Finally someone’s posting with their brain.
I feel more should have been done early on as far as restricting travel. where are our political leaders to protect the homeland, keep America safe. oh that’s right they’re busy with impeachment they likely haven’t even heard about it. hard to close the barn door now.
The CDC isn’t busy with impeachment. No need to ‘close the barn doors’
No they should close the barn doors NOW. They are being idiots. That is all. No place like Trinity or Shasta for a time like this… lucky ducks
So true, haha. Definitely a perk of the place.
Again with the stinkin’ facts!
Its all Trumps fault, not the medical community that didn’t come forward in Dec, hard to do in a commie country, huh Bernie, we can now see how to spend more trillions on health care!
Sarcasm aside, we did and do spend more on heath care. Apparently the problems with the CDC technical functioning started with a reorganization in 2004. “Skinner said the functions of the existing Epidemiology Program Office and the Public Health Practice Program Office will be dispersed among the new coordinating offices. “The functions of those offices are going to continue within the new organizational structure,” he said.”
“the other previously separate CDC agencies included in this new cluster are the National Center for Environmental Health/Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) ” and “What’s needed at CDC is not structural change, but cultural change, such as “stronger public health advocacy,” rather than “health marketing.””

The CDC became more interested in persuading Americans about social issues and for year shorted infectious disease programs to fund it. Probably because pandemics had faded from people’s fears while social and environmental demands increased.
So the Bill Gates foundation ran a simulation of the Corona Virus release 3 months ago and it killed 65 million? And chinese scientists working on the virus in canada illegally smuggled it to umbrella labs in wuhan? Sounds like some dirty politics happening here. (My sources of info is from Zerohege).
The Canadian Chinese spy story was quite interesting. Zerohedge has a pretty good ongoing news aggregate post with the latest infection tallies and locations. Wait until china starts quarantining major shipping hubs, and portions of the worlds “just in time” supply chain get disrupted. That will be harder to downplay. The virus has a incubation period of 15 to 20 days, during which time the carrier is likely infectious. The first case was actually discovered on dec. 1st. Millions have been exposed in the past 7 weeks. Anyway, i could say a lot more on this but my Xìngyùn jīn biānfú instant microwave bat soup is ready and I’m starved.
Seriously? Your bat soup? Fake hypocrisy in a pandemic? O I get it… 65 million people will breath a sigh of relief! The irreverent fact is NOBODY KNOWS.
Huh?
He’s a little colicy because Alex Jones told him the sky is falling again.
Nobody Knows. Right now the contagion rate doubled! And I am very choleric dominant militant . I will be here to help the babies when this goes crisis mode. And I will be selective…
Uh huh. You’re gonna help sick babies, but only the sick babies that you like. Help them with a disease that you know nothing about. Because you’re a dominant militant.
What does any of this nonsense mean?
The term “babies” I will help my fellow man who has turned to the dark side , the liberal communist who would be helpless in a real world crisis, because they believe the government will protect them. In reality, it is the liberal communist government that created the crisis and it will be up to the protectors to “save” the people involved in the crisis. Please stop trolling my comments. I have never trolled you.
Liberals and Communists represent two diametrically opposing economic philosophies. Quit spewing hate about things you don’t understand and I’ll stop telling you that you’re wrong.
Modern “liberals” tend to be statists and, in no way practice “liberalism”.
“Liberalism is a political and moral philosophy based on liberty, consent of the governed and equality before the law. Liberals espouse a wide array of views depending on their understanding of these principles, but they generally support limited government, individual rights (including civil rights and human rights), capitalism (free markets), democracy, secularism, gender equality, racial equality, internationalism, freedom of speech, freedom of the press and freedom of religion.”

Thank you for helping in the fight, this will continue on, not much longer now. The time is right for revelation to begin… I am ready hope everybody is in a good place.
Once again, the devil just might be in the details –

First of all, SARS was not “brand new to mankind.” It was another coronavirus. Second, why in the fuck would anybody use something as unpredictable and with such a low fatality rate as a weapon? It’s not going to kill a lot of people and its likely to randomly spread to your own country. It’s mostly going to kill the poor elderly, not exactly a useful military target.
Thirdly, you are spreading pro-Russian fake-news propaganda.

We might ask “Why in the fuck…?” about a lot of things that make no obvious sense. And accidents are not uncommon.
Wikipedia is hardly a neutral source.

Stop getting your news from your Facebook feed, Delib.
If corona is the problem, switch to Pacifico , better beer any way.
??
I will be switching to Tequila, thank you! As far as the virus upgrades, by the pint, quart and gallon! No need for speculators!
I’m going to wear a mask tommorow shit is about to get real.
Virus masks like the p95 are proven to be ineffective, you need a gas mask!
??I got one from that guy in Fortuna before he went out of business on Main Street. ???
This is a very serious virus that is only just now getting the attention that it should. It is asymptomatic, meaning you can get it from someone who doesn’t have symptoms. It can have a one to 14 day incubation period. It may very well be airborne transferred, in addition to person to person direct contact. It appears to have started December 31.
The good news? It mainly affects people over 50 years old, who have immune problems, although there is evidence that is changing. Paper masks on the face don’t work very well. A N95 respirator will work. Isolation is the best preventative.
Many of the agencies we have are not telling the complete story on this virus. They don’t want to panic the general public. The virus may already be mutating; getting easier to get and affecting more people. The Spanish Flu over one hundred years ago did that. It killed 25% of the world’s population. Nobody to this day knows how it spread so fast, but when it mutated, many more people were killed than the first stage.
We will have a better idea of how bad this virus really is after two or three weeks, when, if we are lucky, the number of infected people will peak. Go to town if it doesn’t peak by then and stock up. Be prepared to stay at home for an extended period of time. Isolation is your friend.
I’ll leave the other comments about how or who started it to my fellow tin foil hat commenters and conspiratory theorists (my tin foil hat is sitting on the table while I get my family ready for the shit storm that may be coming).
As someone who was professionally trained in this exact kind of situation I can only stress to you that the potential for this to get out of hand is very real. Keep up on the news releases.
Gook Luck
Unless you’re an epidemiologist who is willing to state your full credentials i recommend that you refrain from posting
alarmist messages like these.
You don’t need to be an epidemiologist to pick up a history book or ask your grand parents in my case parents, they didn’t even have antibiotics then. so common sense had to prevail, by the way no epidemiologist either. time to wake up.
Thank you for your excellent post.
The Spanish flu didn’t kill a quarter of the world’s population. It killed 50 million people out of approximately 1.8 billion, or 1 in 36 people, or a little under 3%.
Keep up the “great” “”research.””
Approximately 1 in 3 worldwide were infected with H1N1 (Spanish flu) and, of those infected, between 1 in 10 and 1 in 5 (10%-20%) died as a result.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_flu
So far the Corona virus is showing less than 3 in 100 mortality, but a mutation could dramatically change that as it did with the Spanish flu.
The 3 in 100 is 82 deaths in 2900 confirmed infections. Undoubtedly the infection rate is higher so the mortality rate is lower.
Influenza, and it’s effects, kills 100’s of thousands worldwide annually.

Ironically, it has been reported that hospitals in the Seattle area were ready to deal with a serious outbreak because of the recent measels scare.
Remember Wikipedia can be edited by anyone so figures like ” 1 in 3 people” can be made up..its not a good source to cite from.

Yep, Nope.. sorry BR.. The remaining “ Conspiracy theorists” were taken out back and relentlessly digitally massacred for their alleged mis matched facts and info. You didn’t get the memo? Inside the US, the cat is not out of the beg, yet. Information now is that the virus has a transmission rate of 2; everyone that contracts the infection will then infect, on average two others. This is a low transmission rate that indicates none airborne transmission. For contrast, the measles virus has a transmission rate of 18, due to it’s exquisite airborne transmissibility, There is still a fairly good chance of complete containment, or, at least delayed long enough for a vaccine.
Too many chickens in the chicken house. Thank goodness I’m a free ranging chicken, in a low population density, rural area.
Who is going to disinfect everything we import? When the population figures that out things should get interesting.
Just drink whiskey when touching things imported, like your remote or Toyota.
In a place like Humboldt, your chances of dying from this infection probably depend on where you have traveled recently. It is transmittable, but more so in elderly and the immune-compromised.
If you have been to the Southwest, or even Hawaii, where Chinese folks often travel in Winter, it’s more possible. If you have been to China, well, you may worry a bit!
There is no vaccine, and the experimental vaccines, well, they’re being tested! In an anti-vax asylum like the North Coast, you are probably more likely to die of Measles or Tetanus.
Cheer up, Spring is coming!
