‘I Feel Like Every Kid in Humboldt Is Crying Today’: Eureka Teen Remembers Victim of Sunday’s Shooting

“He was really proud of himself for graduating,” said Tianna Canfield, a fellow senior. “We were both about to graduate….I knew Tae since we were in middle school…in 2013. We were pretty close friends from the first day of 7th grade. He was kind of like a brother to me.”
She said that she and Latimer were on the wrestling team together in 7th grade. “He wrestled for a really long time,” she said. “He was always in a good mood,” she explained. “He was always making people laugh.”
Through tears she added, “I feel like every kid in Humboldt is crying today.”
Canfield explained that she hadn’t learned of her friend’s death until after many of her classmates. She had been away camping and hadn’t had phone reception. “As soon as I got service, I had people blowing up my phone on Snapchat,” she said. “I saw the story…I just fell to the floor and cried….I just walked outside and I was crying hysterical…I just didn’t want it to be real.”
Graduation, she said, is going to be hard. “I know everyone is going to be remembering him. It just makes me so sad.”

Damn, this is harsh. He might not have been making the best decisions in life, but still…. what a waste.
Is that her tongue?
Are they flashing some sort of gang signs?
What the hell are they teaching at Eureka High these days?
BAN SNAPCHAT!!!
Looks like ?
Hang loose..
Looks like, “hang loose,” to me.
Wow you really need to get out more often.
NOT gang signs, look at your emojis.
Its a hang loose hand gesture used by millions of people.
Such a sad loss on every level here.
The question we shuld be asking is where the 16yr old got the gun. &if we as a society think a teens right to privacy under the law applies in murder cases.
All the teens deal drugs on snapchat its the only real private forum they have.
Unfortunately pot is the most mellow thing on there, so many pills&powders!!!
Theres def another motive behind this shooting than pot, highly doubt they had multiple lbs for sale at the bus stop. Not worth it otherwise. And to teens wanting herb Ill gladly give you some for free if you avoid these types of deals.
The motive beyond illegal pot?……money.
~the gigantic motive behind “Legal” pot……extortion. Everyone with a business card that bears the “County of Humboldt” seal has their finger in the pie. Another new position of “Economic Development Director” just got on the gravy train.
You would think the “wise ones” really know what the word ‘economic’ means — in a county that cannot balance and close the books A YEAR AFTER THE FISCAL YEAR ENDED – Pfft!
I agree with you, I definitely think there was something beyond pot and money. It’s very sad, especially when they are all so damn young. That kid now has to live with himself knowing he took someone’s life. That is a tough burden for a 16 year old to have to live with in his conscience.
That means hang loose it’s a surfer thing
Surf thing? only if you are in Kailua-Kona. when White girls flash it on instagram they are wanna-be hood rats. its the only gang symbol they know.
Cash me outside, how about that?
Really?! Gang signs?? Everyone on the earth knows that’s a “hang loose” sign or in Hawaii a “Shaka”. And who cares if that’s her tongue! She’s being a care free kid, let’s rejoice she’s having fun and being silly instead of growing up too fast. A child is gone, there’s a set of parents short one kid, there’s siblings one sibling short, there’s a family one family member less, there’s a group of friends missing a friend, there’s a school missing a graduating senior, and there’s a community mourning the loss of this precious life. Instead of worrying about what hidden message is in a picture of two kids being kids think of the horrific tragedy of the loss of life. Think of all of the people who are hurting right now! Shame on you.
Mrs. Villa and So Sad, thank you so much for your replies!
bruh shes holding up surfs up and he’s holding up peace wtf…. do you have a problem with my cousin?
Gang signs wat are you completely ignorant .that’s cowabunga an old surfer or skater sign from the 80s .do us all a favor .you’re probably one of those neg .negative people that have to comment some stupid shit you kno nothing about on every post .first when you down somebody gor a misfortune in life and deface there character commenting some stupid negative crap you no nothing about . [edit]
It’s called a hang loose it’s been around forever it doesn’t mean anything negative or gang related.
This idiot. You can’t be serious. And if you’re joking, not the time or place.
Yep..it is a waste..saddens me
Rip to my lil bro???
Does any one realize that the human mind is the most lethal weapon on Earth more destructive than a nuclear bomb. GUNS pale in comparison . so does everything else
I’m tired of this gun shit.
It’s not gun shit
My guns don’t kill anyone . They just sit there .
It’s people shit , or shit people .
If it’s not guns it’s knifes or whatever .
I’m so sad for this child and his family . What the hell is wrong with people ! No amount of anything is worth a life . Please no more !
You really think a knife kills someone and takes out another kids leg? In a 3 on 1 situation.. BS.. give it up. I have guns too, I use them for hunting and home defense, not crime. But a knife doesn’t do this… that’s bullshit.
knifes injure more people a year than gun. and just a fyi knifes are the weapon used most in dv attacks. also 6 people were killed in a knife attack yesterday in japan. 6 … all it takes is commitment to kill and they will kill.
There was only 2 that was killed.
2. Not 6
1of the dead in Japan was the attacker.
And the attacker held 2 knives, one in each hand.
So it’s a piss poor analogy.
Most guns are designed to kill people, it is there sole purpose. If you are not willing to take that step you wouldn’t own one.
That’s most guns, hunting rifles are commonly purchased and used for hunting purposes ONLY especially in our area. They can also be used for home defense if the situation arises, but claiming home defense as a reason for getting a gun still means you are willing to kill people. And for what? Your t.v., cash, dope, guns, really?
You are much more likely to be shot by a gun if you own a gun. This is all common sense and obvious, yet sometimes reminders are helpful.
People don’t only break into your house for your tv and money. Just a couple months ago a man broke into a woman’s house and raped her while she was asleep. Just down the street from here. So yes I have a gun and won’t hesitate to use it if someone breaks into my house.
Same here! I will defend myself, my daughters and granddaughters, well the men in the family too, though I think they can take care of themselves.
Very sorry about these young men.
That is blame the gun. SMH.
More like dumb people shit. And selling drugs shit. You blame the gun but it was the guy on the other end of it that made it kill someone. The kid who did it will be going to prison, not the gun
If every dumbass out there couldn’t get a gun we wouldn’t have this nonsense. This is what the 2nd amendment nutjobs are causing in our country.
Truth
This is what the lack of civic responsibility and respect for the law does. Dumbassary doesn’t respect the law whenever it runs contrary to their own wants. So dumbasses who expect that a people unaccustomed to respecting the law can create laws that other dumbasses will obey is the king of dumbasses everywhere.
Whether you cherry pick as evidence countries with low violent deaths and high gun ownership or the opposite, countries with low gun ownership and high deaths by violence, the end result is the same- a disregard for social responsibility creates violence death whether that by gun violence, a vendetta culture, a drug culture or an authoritarian state.
One thing that is noticeable is that those with low murder rates tend to have larger suicide rates, a result of a cultural assignment of blame I think, although a few are spectacularly high in both. As with most such lists, the US is pretty much in the middle despite the endless assigned of awfulness by the American self haters. Stupid people are always so sure that someone else is to blame- what is true is that they steadfastly refuse self examination first. Which is a pretty good definition of dumb ass.

100 percent this
The American town where the law requires you to own a gun
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/the-american-town-where-the-law-requires-you-to-own-a-gun-8429798.html December 2016
“American” rights town. Not woosie U.S. benefit/privilege citizens.
Isn’t weed illegal for 18 year olds?
Maybe if it weren’t these kids would be in the store instead of dealing in the streets.
[edit]
Wow. I hope you never have to deal with loss and someone blames it on where tf they were. You’re just cruel and insensitive. You’re talking about someone’s child/brother/friend/confidant/nephew oh and A HUMAN BEING. I can’t believe most of you people. Their families read these comments. You’re sick.
LOL, says a great deal about you that you would trip on something that trivial what a child was murdered. This kid was graduating, so either 18 or almost 18 and had a dried plant. But good job calling yourself out for really corrupt holier than though judgement on a dead child, your a real winner:)
Boy talk about going all judgy-judgy, J… That says a lot about you that you’d call another poster “really corrupt holier than though (sic)” for a relatively benign, certainly non specific question.
old and bold enough to sell illegal drugs to stranger – hardly a child. hopefully this will be a wake up call for any other ‘children’ wanting to make a quick, illegal buck.
21
I feel for the family that lost their child and siblings and for the highschool that is one senior short that was suppose to graduate next month but most of all his parents as they were surppose to go to his graduation all this over selling I hope that 16 year realizes what he just did taking a son away from his parents
That’s it steven, blame it on a gun. What about the drug issue? Drugs are easier to get than firearms. What about the 16 year old shooter? And why were they out making a drug deal? Kid’s do make mistakes, but, two guys out with a couple of younger girls, doesn’t make very much sense either and why were these kids out like that anyway? Where are the Parents in this issue? It is a very bad incident and should not have happened, but, drugs and guns just don’t mix that well.
well they might have shot them over killer broccoli
????This is one of those times I agree with you. Right now everyone is emotional revved up because it was teenagers but you are right look at where they were at and what they were doing. And where was parents?
To be clear. This happened before 10 at night on a weekend and at least two of those involved were over 18. At what age does a parent stop monitoring every move?
Thank you, Kym!!!
Every move? At about age 9 or so or, depending on whether the child has a history of poor choices , whenever the child grows up. But first the parents have to have grown up themselves enough to know there is an alternative to choosing stupid. So the question is where were the parents during the first 18 years that the child still needs to learn that ?
Blaming grieving parents on the worst day of their life is stone-cold cruelty. Kicking people when they’re down is no way to build a positive community for teens and kids in our area.
Kids learn to walk by falling down. They learn to play music or sports by making continual mistakes. Parents learn as we go. It might give you comfort to believe that if everyone just did everything perfectly, life would be pain free.
But that’s not how life works. That outlook doesn’t make anyone safer. It just leaves people feeling ashamed and isolated when tragedy hits. Try offering compassion and understanding instead. Or be quiet.
Nonsense. It’s stupid to call someone shooting someone else simply a”mistake .” How unjudgemental do you demand the world be in order to spare someone’s feelings? When will there be the opportunity for people to talk about how to avoid “mistakes” of this level except now? Way too many people rather trivialize the bad behavior of young people if they haven’t a drastic example of why bad behavior is bad. And then, according to you, when something naturally awful results, no one can say anything because it might hurt someone’s feelings? Way to avoid doing anything ever.
Kicking people when they’re down-the parents in this case- provides an example to all who read this. It’s bullying. It makes a statement. “If you’re vulnerable, you’ll be picked apart and criticized. We won’t help you while you grieve, and we don’t give a shit about you if someone in your family is involved in a crime, even as a victim.”
If you want to have an actual impact, places like CASA and Big Brothers, Big Sisters accept volunteers. Ask around in your community about where you can help raise kids up, whether by helping neighbors or speaking up at public meetings. It takes work to improve things.
Gossip is cruel and lazy, and it changes nothing. Do the work if you want to see things change.
Well said.
Except was the deceased or the shooter ever involved with any public sponsored programs? A whole lot of people seem to feel that violating the law is normal behavior and nothing worth worrying about. They are more likely to criticize any attempt to question than they are to worry about risky behavior. And are more likely to criticize those raising the issue than they are worried about the result. Of course there is no knowing if these particular youths were involved in anything before but this idea is only a reaction to the posts where people feel that no examination of cause is permissible.
Of course, there is no knowing from any of this public information if the parents were deeply involved in raising a solid young man or not. But by all means let’s question their parenting when they have just lost their son using only the information of this one incident. Seems fair (not.)
Beautifully stated.
I’m sorry for your loss as well as the young man behind bars. So many people in this community support for both heartbreaks.
Thank you for your sensible and compassionate remarks. Not enough folks do that. It’s a good thing a lot of these folks don’t live in glass houses. Much love to Tae’s family and friends.
I agree how come his parents did not know where they were parents please monitor your kids know where they are at at all times and where they are going
He was a very handsome young man. What a waste. Prayers to the family.
It’s my friends brother his name is prince and his last name is latimer on Snapchat he made lots of story’s of his brother and many Of my friends that are related to him are cry too it sad to hear this news and it’s harder for my friend.
Hardly a innocent victim. Rumor / good authority has it he was also wrapped up in an attempted murder, also over drugs.
Sad, sure. But clearly it’s the life he chose.
Right, he chose to be killed. He’s just a kid! I don’t care what he had done in the past, he’s still a kid learning. Remember there’s a family mourning right now and your comment is unbelievably cruel and ignorant.
I have never posted on this website before. But seriously people what is wrong with you! Don’t post ANYTHING negative about a deceased person in an obituary section. Have some compassion for this individual’s family members and friends.
This isn’t an obituary, this article is a human interest tie-in to a recent news story. The obituary will likely be written by the family and submitted sometime soon – and you’re right, saying negative things there would be tasteless.
It’s just as tasteless here.
Super sad. More guns = more gun violence. Condolences to everyone who cared about this young man.
more spoons more obese people. so sad for them
~ah, ha ha ha ha.
I wish we could split the us in half. One half with no guns basically slaves of the government and the other half could continue living as we are. All the Geniuses who believe life will be better when the guns are taken from civilians I hope you live to witness the outcome.
People die. Deal with it. Enjoy life and get over trying to restrict other people lifestyles in hopes that you will live a safer life. I personally love the risk associated with life. But then again idc when I die or when ANYONE dies. I wish EVERYONE had a gun. Especially the crazy people. Well I wish everyone had a gun except for the people who wish to be slaves. They deserve to be victims their whole life
You will be missed by many Tae I just wish I could wish this never happened like we could skip Sunday and Tae could still be here with his family and friends today unfortunately it’s not that way so to everyone who knew and loved him bless you all and your all in my prayers Tae was a true gentalman and my sons friend and I loved him just like a son because I feel that way with all the boys nobody deserves this. And Daylyen hope you feel better soon and your also in my prayers god bless you and friends and family
Super sad that you anti gun people don’t get the picture. This dead kid and his homies tried to rob one kid … 3 on 1 … and the one guy had a way to protect himself from the little gang of thugs. And yes. A knife within the hand of a determined individual could have killed all three boys. In China where guns are banned … killing three with a knife by one isn’t rare at all.
Do you have information that the victims tried to rob the shooter? Because I haven’t yet seen anything that says exactly what the motivation for either group was except it involved pot sales.
Really, were you there? I hope you gave your eye witness statement to the police.
the traditional market maintaining an old tradition – death. RIP dude.
Sadly this is what comes from a marijuana based economy
~oh pisser.
Bang ,Bang put the guns away! This ain’t no mother fu@$*#g video game. Its real life you dont get another play.., bang, bang put the guns away. You can own em that ain’t what I’m saying. Do it in a responsible way, lock em up, teach the youth they ain’t for playing. RIP way too young, none of them were thinking beyond a blunt now??? ? That’s some sad, tragic ass situation there!
It’s amazing to me that the same people blabbering about a “lack of social responsibility” have taken to the comment section of an article about the murder of a local teenager to promote their political agenda. Shame on all of you for your lack of respect for the victims and their families and for acting as though you have any meaningful insight into the tragedy that took place or the individuals involved. Rather than bicker like children about the dangers of guns versus knives or the dangers of the drug trade, why aren’t you out there helping to instill a stronger sense of social responsibility in our youth? Keep your narrow-minded political opinions to yourself, recognize the fact that there are problems to be solved in our community and kids that need guidance and support. The last thing kids need are more stupid adults blaming everyone else for society’s ills while they do nothing but argue on online discussion forums. Please take your opinions elsewhere or maybe just say nothing at all for once.
You’d rather a deadly silence? What you complain about IS “guidance and support” in the face of the overwhelming modern tide that no one is responsible for the bad in the world. The trouble with your pleasant sounding and up-to-date ideals is that it doesn’t work. In fact it seems that the more sympathetic the public gets, the worse the problem gets.
The following links alledge gun violence is dropping yet adolescents’ death by violence are increasing. Maybe there are problems with decent silence. Maybe there are solutions in talking.

I wouldn’t say that it has anything to do with blame. It has to do with the fact that with age comes knowledge yes the youth have the beauty but the age has the knowledge. And you watch these things over and over again these tragedies these families ripped apart. How can you help prevent another family from suffering? Or friends Etc in the future maybe think smarter it is all nothing to do with politics, or agendas it’s just being aware. Aware of dangers prevention is key
What is an appropriate comment for a violent death? I appreciate RHBB comment section for the ability to glean Information between the lines and providing a sound board for the community. Everyone reacts differently to tragedy hopefully we learn and grow through discourse. This kid and his friends made some really poor choices. It’s sad and tragic for everyone involved. Now the community must pick up the pieces.
~nicely said.
I can’t imagine anyone not feeling sad about this, and saying/holding kind thoughts of support for family and friends of this young man.
R.I.P tae hope your in a better place I played football and went to school with him k-8 always had a smile on his face and was one of the few cowboys fans I knew then thoughts and prayers go out to everyone one effected expeacialy the fam ?❤️
Honestly this kid was considered the school bully, he purposely went out of his way just to fight kids fist to fist on multiple occasions on campus and dealt with pot on a daily basis it’s kinda a relief someone like him isn’t causing issues on or off campus but truly sad because everyone deserves a chance to change and become the best of themselves.
I have no compassion for this entire incident.
Both parties made choices to bring this story to this point. Sad but true.
I do feel for the parents that are wondering what they could have done differently.
There was one more guy involved. Remember the victim that lived said ” they tried to rob us”?..they, not he.. His name was posted on here the other day. A bad seed. Hope he gets found out and caught for his role in this…
It’s called a hang loose it’s been around forever it doesn’t mean anything negative or gang related.
I can not say this with 100%, but workers of mine, and workers of friends that are of that 18-21 year old had this to say…
I hear from the younger kids that just are recently out of school that the younger kid was getting beat up and robbed by the two older kids for a 8 ball of coke, he was selling to them. The younger kid in fear for his safety shot the kids to protect himself while getting beat.
I can not say this is true, but for all the cannabis haters this might not have to do with cannabis. Sorry to offend anyone, but humboldt when it comes to locals is such a small small place, that I trust the locals to talk about each others business as there isnt much else to do here, especially when most people are in the same or similar trades…
I am so sickened by most of the comments on here. How dare you. This is someone’s child. THIS IS A HUMAN BOY WHO IS LOVED BY MANY AND LOVED MORE. I didn’t even know him but I know that. How dare you disrespect his loved ones like this. How dare you judge. It’s easy to hide behind a screen and say these disgusting things. Go to his family and friends homes and say this to them, I dare you. You won’t. Why? Because it’s disgusting and you’re a coward. But guess what you might as well because they see this. They read what you’re writing. I hope you never feel this kind of loss. I damn sure hope you never feel this loss and then have to read the kind disgusting things y’all are writing. You should be ashamed.
HEY T.
Don’t give up on humanity. I think the world is a tough place right now. We absolutely need more love and compassion, especially in our dialogue with one another. This month marks the 1 year anniversary of the death of a dear friend. It’s so hard to make sense of all this suffering and anger and people project their own fears into the world. It does get easier to deal with. You are probably just getting started on this journey, and will no doubt experience much more loss and sorrow along the way. Be a shining light in the dark. Learn how to listen, really listen to your friends and family. Ive been told there are those who listen, and those who wait to talk. Listening will provide you an incredible opportunity to overcome adversity, frustration, and fear. We are all going through this ride, some are just at different points along the way. I found this Dr Joe Dispenza and he really has done a ton of work on the neurological aspects of our behavior. Stay in the light T. The world can reflect so much darkness in uncertain times.
Stay in the Light!

I’m so sorry for the family. Losing a child is the worst possible thing that could happen to a parent. Let’s stop placing blame on the victims and blame the kid who actually pulled the trigger. He is the reason this kid is dead, period. People make bad decisions all the time but they don’t deserve death because of it. I’m sure none of you are perfect, and I’m sure a lot of you made stupid decisions as a teenager. I know I did. He didn’t deserve what he got and it’s very sad. I’m sure the parents are already blaming themselves and don’t need any of you reprimanding them and looking down on them. They need support. That’s what they need.
Damn that’s crazy
