The fire was reported around 9:45 a.m. near mile marker 20, adjacent to Phillipsville across the South Fork Eel River. CHP dispatch logs indicate the vehicle on fire appeared to be a Type 6 fire engine, which became fully engulfed shortly before 10 a.m.

By 10:02 a.m., the Department of Transportation had been notified, and firefighters were on scene working to extinguish the blaze. No injuries were reported, and the vehicle was later moved off the roadway once the fire was out.

Traffic in the area was slowed, with the southbound No. 2 lane closed during the response.

Yikes! Who lost an engine? Are the firefighters okay? Could they save any equipment? This is a devastating loss to a small volunteer department.

The photo shows a lot of tools and other stuff alongside the road, so maybe they got their gear off the truck.

Since the asphalt is on fire next to the burning truck, it must have been a fuel leak? Who’s truck is it?

The map pin is very, very close to the earlier incident with the bear that was hit and vehicle collisions that followed it.

Smart not to try to extinguish it. Too hot and explosive.

I drove past this before the highway patrol or any firefighters made it on scene. It was fully engulfed and giving off tremendous heat. I didn’t stop because I could see everyone made it out ok. Very sad/odd spectacle to see the fire truck on fire.

I guess Governor Newsom must have passed a law that all state firetrucks that are not electric must be disposed of immediately. I am very happy that there were no injuries involved. Looks like they did get the tool doors open and managed to save some equipment. If that truck is a volunteer unit, I sure hope folks will come together and help fund a new rig.

I’m a Sohum volunteer fire fighter and It was not any of Miranda Fire’s engines. Although Miranda was on scene in their new truck they were given through measure Z.
I don’t believe the fire truck that burned was from any of our local stations. Thank you Phillipville, Miranda and Cal fire for responding to this!

Im curious whose, and what it was! It might be interesting to other fire organizations, there are a few newer trucks being distributed. Was it involved in some kinda wreck first? Was it old or new? Besides a wreck, one wonders if it was a wiring retrofit? A fire engine has a lot of aftermarket cab wiring. Could it have been some kind of new chassis issue? Ford or Ram?
