UPDATE 8:38 p.m.: Video below by Jacob Whitney.
UPDATE 9 p.m.: More photos from the scene.
According to Ryan Swift who took the above photos, “[T]he two trucks never actually collided. The second truck ran over parts of load from the first truck and slid into the embankment. I was literally standing there when it happened.”UPDATE: Loleta Man Driving One of Two Semis That Crashed Yesterday Blocking 101 South of Leggett

Empire rest stop.. Multiple accidents happen there. A big rig just lost a load of logs in that exact area last summer.
Yes I remember that too. Just north of bell springs road. Super dangerous area Have seen a lot of fatal accidents in that stretch. Anyone with extra time Step up and consider Volunteering for our small fire departments. Leggett Piercy ECT Without them There would really be a lot more unfortunate outcomes.. they provide life saving care in those moments of waiting for Ambulance. They need extra hands! They’re crucial first responders Because sometimes in these rule areas It can take out for an hour for an ambulance to get there..
We drove thru there around 7 pm. Northbound traffic was being diverted thru the rest area parking. Southbound traffic was in a line 2 lanes wide and 1/2 mile long. Glad we were going north. (See Ryan’s photo where a northbound car is taking the road to the rest area parking)
Best quote from traffic control this evening was “If you direct me onto this exit, can I still get to eureka?” ….I said no.
Shouldn’t be moving logs or “timber”at all. Plenty of wood to recycle. Lots of old houses to buy. No one needs a giant deck. Paper can be made out of other products Etc. Leave the natural world alone to heal. No more truck crashes with careless drivers.
I don’t know why the first rig crashed, but it was lucky the second one did not hit him. Hope both drivers are fine. We have had a rash of semi crashes lately. Maybe they are trying to outrun the virus.
He was cut off by a motorhome. Last minute lane change into the rest area. Second truck tried to avoid hazards in the road.
Derek, thank you for the info. Wonder if the goof ball driving the motorhome even stopped.
That is a weird section of road. Lots of off angle corners. You can’t go 65 there. It needs fixed.
I don’t think it’s necessarily possible to fix it’s just a Dangerous stretch of road so people should drive slow and be cautious. It would probably be helpful if Caltrans will put up more caution Sign so people can be aware of the turns in the road. Honestly people around here just drive irresponsible.
