Trinity County Public Health Offers Tips to Stop the Spread of COVID-19 and Suggestions on How to Plan

novel coronavirus Covid-19 Trinity CountyPress release from the Trinity County Public Health:

The Trinity County Health and Human Services Public Health Branch (HHS-PHB) continues to work closely with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to monitor COVID-19 activity and strategies to protect our residents from the spread of COVID-19.

Watch for symptoms consistent with COVID-19:

  • Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure:

    • Fever

    • Cough

    • Shortness of Breath

How COVID-19 Spreads

The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.

  • Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).

  • Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.

A paper face mask is helpful in preventing these droplets from infecting others in close contact with the individual who is coughing or sneezing.

Can someone spread the virus without being sick?

  • People are thought to be most contagious when they are symptomatic (the sickest).

  • Some spread might be possible before people show symptoms; however, this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

Social distancing is one strategy to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. The California Department of Public Health has provided the following guidance for increasing social distancing:

Large gatherings that include 250 people or more should be postponed or

canceled.

  • This includes gatherings such as concerts, conferences, and professional, college, and school sporting events.

Smaller gatherings held in venues that do not allow social distancing of six feet

per person should be postponed or canceled.

  • This includes gatherings in crowded auditoriums, rooms or other venues.

Gatherings of individuals who are at higher risk for severe illness from

COVID-19 should be limited to no more than 10 people.

  • This includes gatherings such as those at retirement facilities, assisted living facilities, developmental homes, and support groups for people with health conditions.

  • A “gathering” is any event or convening that brings together people in a single room or single space at the same time, such as an auditorium, stadium, arena, large conference room, meeting hall, cafeteria, or any other indoor or outdoor space.

Can COVID-19 be spread from contact with contaminated surfaces or objects?

It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

It is important to wash hands with soap and water frequently and avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

Community members and businesses can practice routine cleaning of frequently touched surfaces (for example: tables, doorknobs, light switches, handles, desks, toilets, faucets, sinks) with household cleaners and EPA-registered disinfectants.

Testing is available in Trinity County through our healthcare systems and to date there are no positive COVID-19 cases in our county. However, it is important that the public know that our Trinity County HHS-PHB and Office of Emergency Services (OES) are committed to the timely implementation of strategies that reduce the potential spread of COVID-19 and protect our populations that are at greatest risk of severe illness.

You can also prepare for the other possible disruptions caused by an outbreak:

• Make sure you have a supply of all essential medications for your family;

• Make a childcare plan in case you or a care giver become sick;

• Make arrangements about how your family will manage a school closure; and

• Make a plan for how you can care for a sick family member without getting sick

yourself.

Please contact Trinity County Public Health at 530-623-8209 (1-800-766-6147) or your healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns.

I’m doing fine, fever mostly is the issue, and it’s not as bad as a few days ago. Very very mild cough developed yesterday, but my neck isn’t sore anymore. Day 1 had a very mild sore throat, but that passed.

I want to test the system and get an idea of how it is working, and if I test positive, then my statement about an undiagnosed cluster in Redding will be true, and should be known.

If folks haven’t noticed it yet, Kym added a new section on her front page for all Cov19 news. I’m happy about that, it makes all this news readily available without going to the search bar. Thanks Kym.

Yeah, I thought about that.

I’ll ask if their demand for tests are high or low currently.

If low, than I’m not worried about taking one to know, and to tell the person who transmitted it to me.

It’s the timeframe that makes me think so also. About 16 days after interaction with 1 person who was in SF airport all thru Feb.

I think its important to get case numbers and information in our local areas.

I’m not going to wait till I need a ventilator to get tested. (That’s to make a point, I’m sure I’ll be fine)

And not really having any other interactions with other people during the 16 days.

I think its important to get case numbers and information in our local areas.

I think it’s also important to help break the stigma.

But when are they actually going to be available.

There are too many reports today still of tests not being available for sick folks.

FDA approval sounds like a long time away from “in doctors hands”.

Any insight?

Yeah, I wouldn’t wait to take measures to improve your chances before a test. Me, I have started taking mild elderberry supplements now.

Elderberry, made correctly is generally safe to take. Also if you can’t make it to a store, some herbal remedies may be helpful from the land. One is pine needle tea.

/It is true that the influenza medicine Tamiflu (oseltamivir phosphate) is made from shikimic acid, which can be found in white pine, red pine, and other conifer trees. However the pharma manufacturing partners who license the Tamiflu patent from Roche reportedly harvest their shikimic acid from the star anise plant (Illicium verum) grown in China (11)./

Anise is a common cooking herb and would also make a medicinal tea..

Of course only use pine needle tea if your familiar or comfortable with identifying trees. Pondrosa pines are slightly toxic, especially the bark, but the needles in tea are generally ok in moderation. Unless one thinks they may be allergic to pines in general.

The Yew tree can also be mis identified, as a pine, and is toxic and should be absolutely avoided. It’s fairly easy to identify compared to a pine. Do some research, but pine needle tea is something I often use for respiratory ailments, with success. Pregnant women should avoid pine needle tea though..

Also Oregon Grape root is great. I also take lysine anytime I come down with any flu.. or Chest type ailment.. Licorice root is also great.

It’s also been found in blood and in fecal matter. That means if either of those excrements end up on a surface it can be spread that way as well. Don’t poop in public people!!

As the virus circulates, eventually there will be a larger and larger percentage of the population who has had it and developed immunity. Since these people hopefully cease to spread it and there are fewer unexposed people who are vulnerable, there is naturally a gradual slow down in the spread of the disease.

Since it is unlikely it can be contained without a vaccine, the sole goal at the moment is to keep the level of critical cases below the maximum capability of the medical community but not creating total isolation that can’t be maintained anyway and, when it ends, leads to a new crisis. Continuing exposure at a low rate actually will further the natural tapering off. Closing off too much of the spread only means that it will spike later and lead to another crisis.

The schools can not be closed indefinitely so maybe closing only when there is local indications of virus is a reasonable idea. No sense in closing when there is nothing widespread and then either having to keep them closed when it does show. It’s a decision that is like walking a tight rope- the safest place is neither too far to either side.

That’s totally reasonable.

I support the measures across America right now taken by private, religious and public sectors to adjust our lives temporarily as to avoid becoming Italy #2.

Chinese officials are going to Italy to help them out with support, supplies and expertise. That’s a really nice gesture.

TRB,
If you do think you may have been exposed, you should get tested (be sure and tell us). While it is true that in other areas it may be time to move to mitigation instead of containment, in TC we are still at the point where containment may be possible for some days or perhaps a few weeks, and gain us some time to allow the lowering of the overall infection rate curve.
Better for you if you do have it, perhaps, to get sick and get over it now than in two months, when many more may have it. Many more of us may very well get it soon enough, so now is the time to take precautions, both personal hygiene and when out in public (social distancing). Laying low is also good, and there’s no better place to do that than here in TC (or any remote area really).
Good luck to you and everyone else; but remember, luck isn’t likely to help here. Precautions may.

That’s the story around the nation.

And it doesn’t help that the Administration is sending no clear, reliable information.

Vice President Pence attempted to clarify when the Google website on the coronavirus, which was announced at yesterday’s Rose Garden press conference, would be widely available.

At a White House briefing Saturday, Pence said Google is planning to launch the website on Monday, but added that launch will only be available in the San Francisco Bay Area. He said the goal is to expand that site to other areas of the country.

CNN’s Jake Tapper reports that California leaders were stunned Friday to see their graphic for a modest pilot program the state has been working on developing with Google’s parent company Alphabet presented by the White House as if it were a Trump administration program that was a nationwide initiative and ready to go according to a knowledgeable source.

Google said Friday night the company will not be publishing a national-scale website for coronavirus testing anytime soon, contrary to claims made by President Trump during the Friday Rose Garden briefing.

Can someone leave this to Dr. Fauci and push the mouthpieces aside, especially the one that can’t speak more than 5 words: “terrific, fantastic, economy, big, great

And what is up with the baseball cap?

Didn’t he watch Django?

“Never wear a hat inside, even I know that”

He looks like a fool.

Agreed and thank you.

My only issue may be the weather. My area is supposed to have “up to 16″” of snow.

We took the plows off a month ago, and we’re far from pavement.

I will be transparent with the process and results.

Very little is known about the virus but there have been many cases where someone “cured” showed back up with the disease. It is not known if the virus moved to a part of the body not tested and never went away or if there was a re-infection meaning we do not build immunity. As far as I have read there is no evidence that we build immunity

Kym this info on spreading coronavirus is wrong! It is now belived to be most infectious before you show any symptoms and in the first days of mild symptoms. Your risk of passing it to others lessens the longer you’ve had it.

Apologies for no link to articles, not sure how to link it from my phone. Science News has a good article.

I am looking at statewide numbers for corona and am seeing Trinity county per-capita as the highest rate of infection county in the state. Trinity should be among the lowest. Has anyone heard of any cluster among any groups of people in the county?

Just saw the reported number of cases in Trinity go to zero. That makes sense.
