Press release from the County of Humboldt DHHS:

Humboldt County Public Health has been notified of a case of bacterial meningitis in a student attending Arcata High School. The student is currently hospitalized and under treatment. The bacteria, Neisseria meningitidis, is one of the few meningitis infections for which preventive antibiotic treatment is recommended for close contacts.

Although the risk of another student becoming ill is extremely low, out of an abundance of caution, Humboldt County Public Health is recommending that close contacts of the student consider antibiotic preventive medicine. Close contacts are those living in the same household or those who had shared oral secretions, as by kissing or sharing foods, drinks, water bottles, cigarettes or other smoking materials, lipstick, etc.

For all other persons, including those who had casual contact as would occur in most school-related activities, the risk of infection is extraordinary low and approaches that in the population at large (one case per 100,000 population/year). For them, antibiotic prophylaxis is NOT indicated and is not advised.
Public Health is reaching out to close contacts and recommending that they contact their healthcare provider for medication. Area healthcare providers have been sent information on this situation.

Although the risk of disease to other students is extremely low, parents are advised to be alert for signs of meningococcal disease. These include, but are not limited to: fever headache, stiff neck, and/or rash that does not blanch on pressure (suggesting bleeding under the skin). If any of these signs or symptoms should develop, the student should be taken immediately to a physician or emergency room to be evaluated for possible meningococcal disease. In most cases, antibiotic treatment of the disease is usually successful, especially if it is started early.

Individuals with questions should call Public Health at 707-445-6201.

Ahh, for the days of good doctors in Humboldt County. In 1984 when my daughter was diagnosed with meningitis, Dr Mogel, at Redwood Memorial, took excellent care of her + he was able to perform the spinal tap for the specific diagnosis (viral or bacterial).
I hope this young man has as good of outcome as she did since there can be some unfortunate side affects to having meningitis.

Ya it sounds like unfortunately they dropped the ball this time. Our hospitals need some serious help, this is a prime example. A friends sibling is a nurse in Santa Rosa and said sorry but when we hear we’re getting a patient from Humboldt we know its going to be a mess, every time.
This is extremely unacceptable!

The very thing public health assured he didnt have, the doc in SF said he does.
There’s an update from his dad in the latesr article on loco. Sounds like irreversible damage. Heartbreaking.

I do have to admit I was very proactive on the second day after my child wilted and had not shown any signs of getting better from the cold she had all week. When she grimaced as I picked her up I (chin to the chest) I knew to seek help. I was lucky I knew what I might be looking at.
It is very sad about this teenager.
When my daughter was in college and the vaccine was made mandatory the persons giving the shots did not believe her when she told them she had had meningitis. They told ger she would be dead if she had had it.

If the school shuts down they lose money, and that always seems to be a priority for them.

He has passed.
Update on go fund me.
So much love to his family both blood and community.
RIP

Was death potentially preventable with earlier correct diagnosis?
We owe it to this family and all families to find out
