USA Today Recognizes (Belatedly) Trinity County’s Tim Saxon as California’s First Asian American Sheriff

When USA Today posted about the first Asian American Sheriff in California two days ago, they highlighted Paul Miyamoto who was elected last fall in San Francisco County…But, in an article posted a few hours ago, they announced that Trinity County’s Sheriff Tim Saxon, actually took precedence with his election in 2018.

Saxon, who was adopted by an American couple after being born in Japan, was raised in the States. He became a member of the California Highway Patrol in 1983. After retiring as a captain in 2011, he worked in the Trinity County Court system as a Deputy Marshall. Then, in 2018, he ran for and became the Trinity County Sheriff.

According to USA Today,

“Here in Trinity County, we don’t look at race,” Saxon, 63, said in a phone interview Tuesday from his offices in Weaverville, California, about 100 miles south of the Oregon border. “When I was running for sheriff in 2018, race was not an issue in the election. And when I was elected, no one said, ‘Here’s Tim Saxon, the first Asian American sheriff in the state’s history.”

More important than Saxon’s position as the first Asian American sheriff to our minds is how much more open he and his team are to provide information about situations in his county than the previous Sheriff.

You know, reading comprehension is an amazing thing. Saxon is the last name of his adopted parents.

Nice closing line – wasn’t the last sheriff there the one who was living in Oregon while drawing a salary from Trinity County?

With a last name of Saxon I suspect he has another genetic lineage outside of Asia. It was good of him to reflect that identity politics didn’t play a role in his election.

…after reading the USA Today article his surname is an adopted name, but his heritage is Japanese and European.

If he chose not to mention his Asian heritage BECAUSE he thought it wouldn’t play well to racist yokels, itsn’t that “identity politics” as well?

Its okay to admit you’re racist, Ullr. Healthy even. If seeing somebody of a different race triggers you to start babbling alt-right dogwhistles, that’s usually what that means…

Ummm, what? It sounds like you are triggered by something.

Everybody in Trinity knew he is of Asian descent, but it obviously did not matter.. I’m certainly glad he won the election over Hanover.

Seems a direct violation of Kym Rule No 2 “Insulting other commenters will get you deleted. Do it too often and you will get banned.” But then again how is a person prove to themselves they are not racist unless they are busy calling others racists? Or maybe they don’t consider “racist” an insulting term… It is curious who hears “dog whistles” everywhere.

Well, according to modern progressive political theory I was born a racist. So, don’t discriminate against the way I was born, I guess. I was hoping for a quote attributed to me to illustrate my racism, but I guess that will not be forthcoming.

How about I start quoting David Duke at you and telling you that represents modern conservatism? This is the definition of a straw man argument.

I wish it was a Straw Man fallacy. Unfortunately it is a sentiment that has become all too common.

Thanks Tim Saxon. I think your doing well with what you have.

Ya, well shit, that murder suspect was in our area and we were strapped 24/7 because when they pulled out after an hour of searching we asked what we should do and the Sheriff actually said over the phone “Aim for his head”…WTF!!! Then to find out on this site the guy was dead all along 6 months later because Haney didn’t want the headache of doing the paperwork! It is like night and day around here with the switch. Great job Sheriff Saxon!

It is interesting that in Trinity County, race was not an issue and so few people even noticed. How ever in San Francisco, it was front page national news. Different values I guess.

Agreed. Timely communication with the community should be standard operating procedure with all agencies that deal directly with the public. I don’t know if this was a Haney issue or a issue of TCSO stuck in the last century. Perhaps you have some information on this point…?

Frankly the whole TCSO office needs a makeover.

You cant walk into the front desk of the TCSO without thinking your already in jail.

It’s discomforting as a citizen, especially if your going in as a victim of a crime, in my opinion.

Put some canna-tax funds to work!

Geez that was crazy.

It is true that the lightning fires put the county into extremes, I think redding searchlight quoted that 10% of the county’s land burned.

Many people had to fight fires with neigbors to protect their homes, myself included.

I’m sure most people forgot the guy existed once those fires were going.

Nonetheless, that definitely wasn’t the only lack of transparency or communication.

Yeah.

I agree there was plenty of time for a news release, though I believe the first lightning strikes were on the 28th, making it ok only a day difference.

I also agree there are some questions regarding the death.

It does seem like TCSO was keeping vigilantism on the hush.

Well look. It was USA today who wrote the article about the SF Sheriff.

They realised their mistake and then wrote a new article about Saxon.

I doubt that the SF Sheriffs platform was “I’m Asian”, as some might infer from your comment.

You likely know as little of Saxons campaign as you do the SF Sheriffs campaign.

It was USA today who highlighted the fact of a “first”. It may not be a big deal to you or I. But many asian americans are likely thinking it isn’t more o the same.

Plus, with our internment history of the WW2 era, it’s nice to acknowledge the changes we see .

The news doesn’t have to be your most important topic of the day, but if it bothers you than maybe there’s something else going on besides empathy or disinterest.
