Middle Fire

Concern about the Middle Fire located northwest of Weaverville mounted this afternoon as a huge column of smoke rose from the incident. However, Shasta-Trinity National Forest Public Information Officer, James Wettstaed reassured us that though the fire “has picked up some activity this afternoon, there are no problems.”

Below is the morning press release from the incident:

The Middle Fire showed moderate fire behavior yesterday, adding 121 acres for a total size of 575 acres. It continues to move south towards the Little East Fork of Canyon Creek, burning actively in timbered areas. Because of higher moisture levels the fire is barely burning in the brushy areas. Planned activities for today include the construction of indirect fireline for protection of private property and historic sites. A total of 109 personnel are currently assigned to the Middle Fire. Cooler temperatures are predicted for today with the possibility of showers over the fire today.

A Closure Order has been issued for areas potentially affected by the Middle Fire, including Ripstein Campground, Canyon Creek Trailhead, Trail 10W03, Trail 10W06, and Trail 10W08 south of Canyon Creek Falls. It was started by lightning on September 5, 2019, and is located northeast of the Canyon Creek Trailhead in the Trinity Alps Wilderness.

This fire is challenging because of the steep, rugged terrain. Two firefighters were injured on the Middle Fire during initial attack and keeping firefighters and the public safe is our number one priority. canyon creek — the most popular wilderness trail in the world — first did it back in the early 70’s — now , its heavily overused — so — a fire closing the trailhead is maybe a good thing ? — count-counterpoint ..

I was looking forward to some moral mushrooms at my favorite swim hole, but it’s totally on fire now! Looks like fire on both sides of canyon creek with heat showing up Ripstein gulch. The forest is really healthy there with mostly large firs, hopefully down at creek level it is a predominantly understory burn. Nice pic Brian, looks like it was taken somewhat east of Barker mtn. looking accross the Dutch creek drainage?

Bingo! You know your Trinity, Erik! I have some head-springs for Dutch on my parcel. Barker is my playground.

The column calmed down real well before dark and as the clouds were building.

I totally agree ! I only day hike it part way up mid week any more if I am in the hood.
A little reprieve could be a good thing.
