[UPDATE 3:59 p.m.] Multiple People Injured After Head-on Collision on Myrtle Avenue
“All patients are out of the vehicle, ambulatory, and conscious,” reported the Incident Commander.
There are five total patients occupants in three cars–two solo drivers and, in a third vehicle, two adults and a 3 month old baby.
UPDATE 3:46 p.m.: The road is temporarily closed while the vehicles are removed.
UPDATE 3:59 p.m.:The roadway is now clear.
According to two witnesses, Glenn Lianoz and Thomas Justice, a Dodge Charger and a Kia were traveling northwest on Myrtle Avenue when a Toyota Corolla traveling in the opposite direction veered across the lane, hit the Charger and spun around. Then it hit the Kia, which had three occupants, head-on.
Four patients were transported to the hospital with complaints of minor pain. The baby, who was securely fastened and uninjured, was transported to the hospital with the adults it was traveling with.

MU?
Accidentally deleted the rest of the letters in “Multiple People” and didn’t realize it until after I published.
there needs to be a light there, people are going 45 mph past that gas station
This was a head on collision. One of the drivers crossed the lane and hit one car on its side and then the next car head on. A light would not have stopped this.
Although it is *possible* the reason the driver swerved was to avoid what they thought was someone coming out of McFarlan. It is indeed a tricky intersection. I used to live in there, and the way to come out of McFarlan and turn left was to wait only for traffic on the left (heading southeast) to clear, and to get out there and sit in the middle lane waiting to merge into the northwest traffic. But i saw people get impatient waiting and just charge out when it was unsafe, or creep up on my bumper to try to push me to do so.
Better yet, how about giving out tickets to those who can’t seem to drive the speed limit.
My sentiments exactly. And how about people who merely slow down a red lights and stop signs when turning right?
Charlotte,
thanks.
My sentiments exactly, too. Lights and stop signs mean nothing when people refuse to drive legally and safely. I am constantly tailgated on Myrtle and Old Arcata Road by crazy speeders. Gets worse every day.
I hit the “save data” button when responding but this program refuses to hold my data any more. Is that a hint?
Wow, an app that deletes my data rather than sells it. How novel, how humiliating. OK, Kymster, I’ll try it again.
I apologize. We are attempting to fix this problem with the emails.
Old local,
I concur.
Me to wu?
Pajamas… check. Flip flops… check. Yep it’s in Humboldt
There are dozens of roads along Myrtle that have vehicles trying to enter traffic. Many driveways, business parking lots too and a whole lot of buildings too close to the road that interfere with a line of sight. I’ve never noticed that McFarlan is particularly worse than others. The vehicle could have swerved to avoid a dog, child or a piece of debris. Or for no good reason at all. It’s not stated in the article.
Here is a polite hint.
Maintain your lane, no matter.
Travel at a speed that you can break to avoid an accident.
Ok, maintain your lane, slow speed, brake, wait for dog or child to clear lane.
Another possibility: maintain your lane, slow speed, brake, wait for crater-sized pot hole to clear the lane.
Either way, get rear ended by those following so close that YOU could hit their brakes for them.
Nonsense!
You present no argument.
How about this curly, everyone agrees that most people drive way too fast around here, and/or a lot of them are on their gadgets or somehow preoccupied (as witnessed both on the streets and in these comments). “Maintain your lane, no matter. Travel at a speed that you can break to avoid an accident.” While I agree with your intent, intent will do nothing, no matter how far back you are following and how well you can brake, if the jackwagon behind you is kissing your bumper.
Now, I just drove that section last night, and while it was dark, I didn’t see any potholes, of any size, I needed to avoid in my little civic. So, we can rule that out as to why the at fault vehicle may have swerved. As mentioned by someone else, dog? kid? Maybe it was someone who started to aggressively pull out of the gas station or side street and so panicked the driver avoiding one accident for another. (Again, aggressive drivers pulling out of spaces and into your space is often witnessed by commenters.) Could have been anything. Unfortunately, the cynic in me leans toward a gadget being involved. But, s#!t happens. And often times, the only way to avoid said s#!t is to break the law and take another lane. And sometimes, as seen above, worse s#!t happens.
It’s not all cut and dry as “No Matter”.
Looks like a bunch of “whiplash” lined up on the curb.
Keep your eyes on the road, your hands upon the wheel… and stay in your own lane. Please people, WTH? It’s no joking matter.
I really wish there were follow-up on each of these accidents where we find out what exactly was going through people’s heads when they swerved into the other lane and caused head-on collisions.
I wonder if she pressed SEND on that last text?
kids don’t text they use messenger.
You mean the adults sitting on the curb?
yeah that one guy is dying to have a butt. looks like flip flops is the at fault driver.
what’s wrong with driver’s in Eureka? did they get their driver’s license from a crackerjack box?
No, that’s the high quality one. I think theirs came from a baggy. If the City of Eureka set up roadblocks the jails would be full in half a day.
People of Eureka are very good drivers. It’s all the people who have moved here for green rush who bring their horrible driving practices with them. These kind of accidents have occured with increasing frequency over the past 5-10 years.
LOLOLOLOLOL
I have lived in Eureka twenty years. Never seen such terrible drivers. I’d rather dodge the illegals speeding around L.A. The homicidal drivers of Humboldt make a game out of blowing through stop signs and aiming straight at pedestrians in crosswalks. They yell obscenities at you for calling them on it. Worst drivers in the state.
They need to crack down on all of this. It’s a joke that it’s gotten this bad. I’m scared to drive here. For my kids mostly.
did you look at the photos before commenting? the only time I see growers in Eureka is at Costco. Henderson Center is the land of cars that flip going 25 mph. Eureka drivers are worse than British Columbia drivers and they have a national reputation of being the worst in North America. the increase in the past 5 years is due to everyone being addicted to their social media on these smart phones. I got hit this year at I and 14th, the driver that hit me said she didn’t see the light or the fact it was red, she also didn’t have insurance.
Not true. Locals are decent hard working people. It’s all the people from other cities like LA, and other states coming here and ruining everything. Mostly criminals and ‘homeless’. Yes it’s true. No I can’t provide proof for confidentiality reasons. But let’s just say I do see it every single day and know it’s true. This is nothing to do with smart phones, and everything to do with high and drunk people and criminals/growers/gangsters. Where I am, we see a new person just moved here ‘out on probation’ everyday. For the last 10 plus years. Every day. This is a small area. And this is just ONE establishment. Do the math. Our area has been taken over by thugs.
Not true, People are people. Doesn’t matter where they are from, where they grew up, where they move to. Some work hard. Some are lazy azz bums and crooks. I’ve seen both Humboldt locals and transplants work their butts off. I’ve also seen both locals and transplants sit around and do nothing expecting handouts. I’ve not only seen these people, I know some from all four groups.
Yes, I am a transplant. Been here since 1996. I have also definitely slowed my pace, both on the road and lifestyle. In San Diego you have to move fast or you get run over. One of the many reasons I moved here. I also work my butt off. So, I kind of take offense in what you said.
You are so right. I’m a native, and this would never happen a couple decades ago. This place needs some massive cleaning up, and these people should not be allowed here. Us locals are fed up of all of it. It’s unsafe. It’s unpleasant. Who wants to raise their kids around this? All the decent citizens here need to mobilize and demand and end to all of this. Harsher punishments for people who do crimes, and even ‘minor’ traffic violations, etc. They all come here to run criminal operations, or claim they are ‘disabled’ for being a drug addict or such, and then they get given free money from the county to go spend it on drugs and alcohol. Many get more than working people do, and could rent a room or such, but choose to live on the streets. But even the ones who mange to work and have cars etc are no better. I see it everyday. A person just ‘out on probation’ that is from another city or state. No one should be allowed to just show up here and claim benefits etc unless they are contributing to the community, not exploiting it. People tell me their employees are high all the time and they don’t even fire them. They are out there driving and endangering everyone else. I’m so tired of all the lowlifes that have taken over everything and holding the rest of us hostage. The insanity and depravity needs to stop. No more enabling these people. It doesn’t help them or anyone else. This place has become a dumping ground and catering to the scumbags instead of lifting everyone up and setting better standards.
Seems like a sunny day brings out the worst in the worst drivers around here.
They should consider a light there.
Saw somebody drive very crazy in Eureka today,
they went down the wrong way to get around one of the cement islands,
they almost hit me, on purpose,
I’m almost positive they were stone cold drunk.
Eureka should consider a permanent check point,
even if they need more money to hire an extra officer just for that.
Totally agree.
the bad driving in Eureka is just as bad as the drug problem. probably related? trunk load of junk.
And the Darwin Award goes to….which Moron playing with their phone while driving above the speed limit?
Yep, the three D’s! Drunk, Drugged, or Distracted driving. Check the phone records. If the driver was using their phone when the collision happened, they need to lose their driving privilege! Ride the bus and use your phone all you want! We seem to live in a time where people are no longer held responsible for their dangerous and bad behaviors.
Bring back spankings, the time outs didn’t work.
I have been hit three times by people with substance abuse problems in my 50+ years of driving. I’ve got news for you. Whiplash is a serious injury and will never totally go away!
You have to get use to a crunching sounding neck and waking up with headaches all the time.
Try sports instead of your phone games! You might be healthier
and lose some weight. Drive slower and walk faster.
Yes. But common sense is frowned upon now….they think pandering to these lowlifes is ‘progressive’.
Thank goodness for properly installed, properly used carseats. They’re designed to protect a baby’s spine in a crash and the baby can even be xrayed while still strapped in.
That stretch of Myrtle and Harrison especially the turn into St Josephs needs to be improved for safety; perhaps several more stop lights (intersection on Harrison into St Josephs, intersection from Myrtle into Harrison for starts). Folks drive too fast plus there is all the medical related traffic.
But there already is a light at Myrtle and Harrison.
There is no good way to make left turns out of several businesses or streets in that area, though–you’re right. What about at Ramone’s… the place is always busy with people trying to find parking, or turning around, or walking (on the crosswalk) across the street, but having to hold up a hand and wave to get drivers to notice and stop.
oops
You are correct about Myrtle and Harrison but you get the drift about that area.
That stretch of small businesses on the east side of Harrison is a relic from the past. There is so much medical traffic from the geezers (like me) that regularly are in the area. The newer Safeway/Walgreens “island” has a dedicated traffic light and the back entrance off Harrison.
Exactly. There’s a lot of frustrated waiting to pull out, esp. going left, from any of those businesses or medical establishments… not so much the Safeway or Ace compounds. Because: lights and/or turning lanes.
Best strategy to avoid injuries from bad, law-ignoring drivers is to drive a TANK! Than, when they hit you you get a love tap and their vehicle is now an accordion. Equalize, today!
