[Update: Correction] Man Dies After Reported Stabbing in Hoopa Early Saturday Morning

A man is dead following a reported stabbing in Hoopa early Saturday morning, according to scanner traffic.
At around 5 a.m., the Emergency Communications Center received a call from a male who said he had been stabbed twice by his uncle [in an altercation where he alleges his uncle was attacking him.] *The man told dispatch he was hiding in the bushes near a residence in the Pine Creek Road area. Officers responded from the Lord Ellis area. Dispatchers were unable to recontact the caller again by phone.
Around 5:20 a.m., the victim’s grandmother called the ECC after her grandson contacted her and told her what had happened. According to scanner traffic, she arrived on scene and found her grandson the victim covered in blood. She reportedly told dispatch that the uncle was not at the scene. She advised dispatch that she and her grandson the victim were in a silver Kia Sorento waiting for help law enforcement to arrive, alerting first responders enroute that a juvenile child was in the car with them as well.
At approximately 5:40 a.m., first responders on scene reported the victim was unresponsive and began CPR. An ambulance was still en route with lights and sirens.
Deputies reported one person was in custody at that time.
At 5:54 a.m., those on scene reported the victim had died. The coroner was requested.
The victim’s name has not been released.
This report is based on scanner traffic monitored by a Redheaded Blackbelt. Information from scanner traffic may be incomplete or change as the investigation develops. Redheaded Blackbelt will update this story as official information becomes available.
Update: The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office has released the following statement on their social media page:
Deputies are on scene in the 2700 block of Pine Creek Road in Hoopa investigating a homicide. The Major Crimes Division has taken over the investigation, and a suspect is detained and being questioned on scene. There are no outstanding suspects, and there is no threat to the community at this time.
Correction Update: Based on a reader tip, we re-analyzed the scanner tape. Upon closer examination, the tape states that the reporting party told dispatch he had stabbed his uncle twice while the uncle was allegedly attacking the reporting party. He then told dispatch that he was hiding in the bushes following the incident.
For clarification, we’ve provided the scanner transcript below with the involved names redacted until official notification of next of kin is made. We apologize for the error.
Redacted scanner transcript:
[The RP (reporting party) is] contacting on 911 stated he is being attacked by his uncle. …Line disconnected, on callback, made contact with [RP], who states that his uncle… was attacking him somehow, so the RP stabbed him twice. Now the RP is hiding in the bushes.
The grandmother of the reporting party (her grandson) awaited law enforcement’s arrival in a vehicle. According to scanner traffic, the grandmother was unsure where the uncle/stabbing victim was at during that time.
Upon arrival, law enforcement found the uncle/stabbing victim who was unresponsive and began performing CPR. He was pronounced deceased a short while later.

Hoopa has had enough violence. Such a beautiful area.
Please,God, no. Prayers and love for this family in their hour of darkness.
Ps- for those about to start Hoopa bashing, just don’t. This type of behavior is no more common in the Valley than anywhere else. I’ve had the privilege of interacting with the river communities for a couple of decades now and found the people to be genuinely loving, open handed, and honest. I would also caution you against making any prejudgments before more of the story is known. Remember that a grandmother and a minor child sat with a family member while he died. Choose your words with compassion.
Thank you for speaking out. No matter the issue. They have a family that is devastated 💔 pray for them don’t criticize
I’m just sorry to see the good people in hoopa valley have to endure the hardship of violence. There’s been enough of it everywhere.
Compassion would be a good thing for everyone to have more of.
Youd have a hard time making up this sort of thing. Its almost like an S. Clay Wilson cartoon thats come to life.
“Officers responded from the Lord Ellis area”
45-60min response time is rough when you’re bleeding out.
