Press release from Proposed Southern Humboldt Business Improvement District:

The Steering Committee for the proposed Southern Humboldt Business Improvement District met on Friday, April 17, to discuss next steps in the district formation process.

As the timeline has recently been extended through October 1, we are entering an important phase focused on community education and engagement. We recognize there are many questions, and we are committed to providing clear and accurate information to the best of our ability.

To support this effort, we have established a dedicated email for community questions:
[email protected]

We encourage community members to submit questions by May 1, which will allow us time to gather accurate responses in coordination with the County of Humboldt.

In addition, a Community Town Hall has been scheduled, with the space generously donated by the Mateel Community Center:

WHERE: Mateel Community Center
WHEN: Thursday, May 14
TIME: 5:00 PM

During the Town Hall, we will present responses to submitted questions.

We appreciate the community’s patience as we move through this process. This is new territory for Southern Humboldt, and as a Steering Committee, we are committed to learning the process and communicating clearly as we move forward together.

We look forward to continued community engagement.

Thank you,

The Proposed Southern Humboldt Business Improvement District Steering Committee

IMHO:

G’Ville/Redway future.

(1) gas station (well maybe 2). (1) store. (1) Hardware, (1) Bar, (1) EMS. (1) Diner.
Witness Hayfork, Willow Creek, Myers Flat, Weott, Orick, Klamath… etc.

Now, just a wide spot in the road (no matter what one thinks).

Heck… just let ‘er rip.

I am interested in learning more about this, and hope that our community submits questions so we can understand the proposal, and whether it would benefit our community or not. I am interested in concrete steps toward rebuilding our community, and I hope others are, too. One of the reasons I wanted to move here was to be part of a community that accomplished things. We were hit hard by the implosion of the cannabis industry and the COVID shutdown. I hope this town hall will be an opportunity to work together again to create a positive step forward. Let’s submit good faith questions and then talk about the pros and cons together.

If you want to blame Prop 64 (Adult Use of Marijuana Act) for the GRAB down turn, its no different than when prohibition was repealed in December 1933. There was already a model of what would become of the SOHUM black market and underground cannabis industry, it took place in Colorado years before. SoHum should have taken a lesson from that, but was to arrogant to read the writing on the wall and plan for what was to become of SoHum.

However, you cannot blame the “COVID shutdown”, because it did not shutdown people from doing their everyday business in town and across the entire county. SoHum was hit as hard as any other small town in California. However, the legislation of permitted cannabis grows did end the black market flow of money that supported SoHum, just like repeal of prohibition did.

Here is the only written document about the SHBID. You should read it and then ask questions, allot of questions…

Who appointed the Steering Committee for the proposed Southern Humboldt Business Improvement District and who are they? Why aren’t their meetings made public in advance and allow the public to attend?
