Our schools face serious challenges: declining enrollment, shrinking budgets, staffing shortages, transportation barriers, and only slow gains in student achievement statewide. These problems cannot be solved from Sacramento alone. They require a leader who understands the very different realities facing California’s urban, suburban, and rural communities. Humboldt County voters and families should pay close attention to who is running to lead California’s schools. Candidate Josh Newman has already shown us something important, he listens and he cares about Humboldt County.

Josh Newman was the only candidate who took the time to come to Humboldt County and listen directly to our community. He did not simply campaign from Sacramento or Southern California. He came here. He met with students, teachers, principals, superintendents, and education leaders. He also took the time to visit Academy of the Redwoods, Cal Poly Humboldt and College of the Redwoods, recognizing that education in our region is deeply connected from K–12 through higher education.

Too often, leaders seeking statewide office overlook the North Coast and fail to comprehend the unique challenges facing Humboldt County schools. Josh Newman understands because he came here and learned. For rural communities like ours, that matters.

Josh Newman is an Army veteran, entrepreneur, educator, former state senator, nonprofit leader, and father — a combination of service, leadership, and real-world understanding that is exactly what California needs right now. As a state senator and former chair of the Senate Education Committee, he has worked directly on education policy, student support systems, and workforce development.

Josh Newman has a clear vision for students in California and a thoughtful plan for strengthening our schools. Most importantly, he has shown that every community matters..

Humboldt County was not an afterthought for him, and that says a great deal. California needs a superintendent with both vision and a willingness to listen to all parts of the state.. Join me in voting for Josh Newman as our next State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Sincerely,
Jessica Callahan

From google AI. $243.000/ student? Is this for special ed students? The rest get much less than other school districts. This whole system needs a major overhaul. Just look at the results. Social justice at work. The job goes to the highest bidder.

California public schools spend approximately $20,500 to $26,000 per student annually as of the 2022–23 to 2025–26 period, placing the state in the top 15 nationwide. Funding has increased significantly, with projections for 2026–27 suggesting up to $27,418 per student, driven by strong state revenue, federal COVID-19 relief, and the prop 98, minimum funding guarantee.

.
Per-student spending in Humboldt County varies significantly by district and program, with specialized Humboldt County Office of Education (HCOE) programs reporting costs over $243,000 per pupil, while local school districts typically range from $15,000 to over $18,000 per student. General expenditures often focus on instruction, supporting high-need, low-income, and foster youth populations.

In 2022, China spent approximately USD 5,161 per student (based on purchasing power parity) across primary to tertiary education. While overall funding has increased, expenditure varied significantly by school level in 2022, with funding of roughly 14,918 RMB for kindergartens, 15,240 RMB for primary schools, and up to 24,854 RMB for senior middle schools.
Key Education Spending Data in China:

  • Total Investment: China’s annual education expenditure exceeded 6.46 trillion yuan (about 906 billion U.S. dollars) in 2023.
  • Expenditure by Level (2022):
  • Kindergartens: 14,918 RMB (approx. $2,100)
  • Primary School: 15,240 RMB (approx. $2,150)
  • Junior Middle School: 21,469 RMB (approx. $3,030)
  • Senior Middle School: 24,854 RMB (approx. $3,510)
  • Household Costs: Household education expenditures are high, averaging 8,464 RMB (approx. $1,200) per year, which often accounts for over 17% of total household income.
  • Comparison: China’s per-student spending is about one-third of the OECD average.

Spending has increased significantly over the past decade, with high schools seeing improved facilities, such as 76% of classrooms becoming multimedia-enabled by 2021.

The chicoms also select the best students for advanced education. If you cant keep up you will become a laborer. There is no special needs pampering there. It is very competitive. Students study 10 to 14 hours a day, six days a week. Do you see a difference here verse China? The social justice in the USofA makes soft crybabies.
