[Update] Big Rig Tips Over at Confusion Hill

A big rig tipped over into a ditch early this morning about 6:10 a.m. on southbound Highway 101 near Confusion Hill, temporarily blocking a lane of traffic, according to the California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Information Page.

CHP logs indicate the truck went off the roadway but the male driver got out of the vehicle. CHP states he is uninjured.

The southbound lane was blocked, and Leggett Volunteer Fire Department provided one-way traffic control while responders managed the scene. The driver attempted to arrange a private tow, though CHP noted a tow response with an estimated 90-minute arrival time.

At approximately 7:41 a.m., CHP reported the roadway was open, with traffic control still active as crews coordinated towing and recovery of the vehicle.

This is a developing story. Information is based on initial CHP reports and may be updated as more details become available.

UPDATE:
As of 12:54 p.m., southbound U.S. Highway 101 at Confusion Hill was fully closed, according to the California Department of Transportation. California Highway Patrol logs indicate crews were in the process of cutting down a tree that was holding a truck in place, with the duration of the closure still unknown. CHP reported that the roadway closure was necessary to safely complete recovery operations, and fire personnel were requested to respond once the tow truck arrived in case vehicle batteries shifted during recovery. Further updates on reopening time were not immediately available.

UPDATE 2:50 p.m.: The highway has reopened to one-way traffic:

Semi off the road into the trees. Semi off the road into the trees.

Illegal immigrant who can’t read English? With a license from CA DMV? I’m only asking because it’s a hot-button news topic right now…In any case I’m glad the driver is okay. The road there is pretty tough curvy if you don’t know it…

Or could it be a dumb American citizen who wasn’t paying attention? Enough with the racist stuff already. Jeez!

Yes it could be anybody. I see now that you consider even asking the question to be “racist”? No. I asked if it was an illegal immigrant who can’t read English because that is a pretty hot topic in the national news- no not jus Fox. Indeed the article I read just before this one was about Congresswoman Crockett in Texas equating non-English speaking drivers of commercial trucks w/ people renting cars in foreign countries and not knowing the local language! NO- a commercial truck is 80,000 pounds and is not a rental car!! The arrogance of her ignorance and non-concern for our safety…And CA DMV has issued thousands of commercial driver licenses to illegal immigrants who cannot read English. This is not a racist statement- it is true. If the driver was a legal citizen understanding English then it wouldn’t matter what race they are…so actually YOU are the one getting all “racist” about my comment. Are you just another touchy white person trying to patrol? And I only ask that because I sure see a lot of it!
Anyways I sure hope the driver is ok. Whatever race or religion they are! Oh no- did I say “race” again- better scold me LOL!

Are you suggesting the driver crahed up off the side of the road because they were unable to read a sign instructing them to not do that?
I’ve driven that stretch plenty of times and don’t ever recall seeing such a sign.

Yep exactly what I got outta that comment. Road signs are pretty universal. Never had a drivers license except in CA. Imagine it’s hard to pass the test if you can’t read english

They aren’t actually taking the test, they are just given CDLs.

You can’t get a driver’s license without taking the test.

Don’t believe everything you see on Twitter.

No. I was asking if anybody knew their status. Illegal immigrants should not be allowed to get commercial drivers licenses but thousands have in CA. And according to the string of articles I read just before this one there are thousands in the country that do not understand English. So I jumped from what I had just read and … just asked the question. I wasn’t implying anything else. I was curious and maybe somebody in this comment section had more specific info. But no- just the regular fighting and accusations and people imagining my intentions. LOL. I’m glad the guy is okay!

In this day and age, we all have to be careful with our words. Racism is a touchy situation. For good reason. To be respectful to everybody is the way to go.

A dumb American citizen was not a very nice statement. Have you considered mechanical failure, forced off the road, etc. Just be thankful the driver is ok. It looks like the truck was hanging by a thread from going on down.

That’s a huge drop there! Whoever it was they must’ve been very worried…Glad they’re safe! That road is very curvy and if you don’t know it well it’s easy to shift weight the wrong way- one second of miscalculation could be fatal. I’ve done it in my truck where I ended up borrowing from the oncoming lane-which was thankfully empty! I’ll never forget that moment of fear and adrenaline…

Farce, it sure did look like a huge drop. Glad you had much better luck in keeping your truck under control. I can only imagine the fear and adrenaline you must have had. Happy you are still with us.

I hesitate to jump to conclusions. Maybe the driver had some kind of medical situation. Maybe he got spooked by a deer….. maybe a mechanical issue with his rig. And then maybe he didn’t have experience navigating this kind of road….

True that- could be a lot of things. Sometimes people in this comment section know more and they clue us in…I’m just glad he got caught before going down to the river! That’s a crazy drop right there

I’m glad the driver wasn’t hurt.

When Richardson Grove is opened up and bigger rigs start tipping over, will the towing companies have to get bigger tow trucks?

Semi’s tipping over either in Richardson’s Grove or other parts of good “old” highway 101 is a possibility. It seems that most tip overs can be handled by the tow trucks we have now, but having several larger ones would not be a bad idea. They are really expensive and can only pay for themselves while on a call.

Not really. Tractors (i.e.the trucks) are the same.
Only difference is a longer trailer (up to 48′) that is specified in the state highway standards.

— web stuff.
On non-designated Interstate Highways, the “California Legal” highways, total combination length is typically limited to 65 feet, with semitrailers often limited to 48 feet.

I think that they needed 2 big tow trucks to extract it.
If not out (now 5pm)… they will probably close the highway this evening and get it out.

What’s with the downvote?
Sometimes I think people just downvote to downvote.
(We called them one star bandits on a message board once, lol)

I wish to commend the author/editor of this for using the term “big – rig” and NOT calling every big rig a “semi”. Ever semi is a big – rig; however, not every big – rig is a semi.

10 wheeler.

Not an 18 wheeler.

Truck only has a single drive axle, and the semi trailer only has one axle. Probably a 32′ trailer. No sleeper cab… just a ‘local’ delivery tractor.

So it’s a… er…’10 wheeler’… or so.

Truck is still there and a Chp and 1 tow truck but probably not big enough to pull it out
