Toyota Prius Slides Over Embankment on Greenwood Heights Drive Near Eureka

Traffic Collision Car Accident Feature iconA Toyota Prius went into a ditch on Greenwood Heights Drive, between mile markers 2 and 2.5 around 8:34 tonight, according to the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page. Callers initially reported a vehicle about 20 feet over the edge but that was later modified to about 25 feet down the embankment.

By 8:41 p.m., an additional report the driver’s wife indicated the driver—a solo adult male—texted that he had slid off the roadway. He reportedly told her he was not hurt but was stuck.

Eureka Police Department and fire personnel were notified and responded, an ambulance was not dispatched due to the driver’s self report of no injuries.

At approximately 8:57 p.m., Humboldt Towing was en route with an estimated arrival time of 25–30 minutes to recover the vehicle.

This is a developing report. Information is based on CHP dispatch logs and may be updated as more details become available.

Extremely foggy there last night. Elderly driver. Very steep area and luckily he got caught by some trees. Thankfully somebody saw his lights over the side of the hill, quickly drove back down to a reception area and called it in. Cars go off down steep hills and if nobody notices they can become fatalities, sometimes found only years later. It’s good that we look out for each other and stop to help. Thank you, Good Neighbors!
