Hitchhiker Assaults Driver, Dies After Law Enforcement Attempts to Arrest Him

This is a press release from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Department. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:Mendocino County Sheriff's Office MCSO Blur

On 06-05-2025 at approximately 07:02 P.M., the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a call from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) who requested Sheriff’s Office assistance for a call in the 2000 block of Hearst Willits Road in Willits, California.

CHP informed the Sheriff’s Office of a call they received regarding a hitchhiker who was picked up by a motorist in the area and the subjects were now involved in a physical fight. CHP Officers were responding to the call with an extended response time and Willits Police Department (WPD) Officers were also requested to assist. This investigation revealed the male subject had brutally assaulted the driver of the vehicle after he was offered a ride and entered the vehicle. This assault was unprovoked and resulted in injuries that caused the driver to be admitted into a local hospital.

A Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Deputy responded to the area and contacted a male adult subject walking in the middle of the roadway in the 1200 block of Hearst Willits Road. The male subject failed to comply with the lawful orders of law enforcement and immediately took a fighting stance and lunged at the Deputy. The Deputy pointed his department-issued Taser device at the subject while ordering the male to comply and surrender.

The Deputy moved away from the male in the roadway and attempted to speak with him and de-escalate the situation. The Deputy continued to employ de-escalation tactics that were ignored by the male.

The male subject fled along the north side of the roadway when a Sheriff’s Sergeant arrived to assist. The male subject ran into the brush north of the roadway as Sheriff’s Office personnel continued to order him to surrender. Multiple warnings were provided to the male subject that he would be Tased if he did not comply with their orders. During the attempts to lawfully arrest the male subject, Sheriff’s Office personnel utilized Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) spray.

The male subject moved onto his stomach, so Sheriff’s Office personnel attempted to place the subject in handcuffs. The male subject physically resisted attempts to place him into handcuffs and assaulted a Deputy so a Taser was deployed to overcome the resistance and arrest the individual.

Willits Police Department Officers arrived as Sheriff’s Office personnel continued to inform the male he was under arrest and ordered him to comply with the arrest.

Sheriff’s Deputies and WPD Officers removed the male from the brush and continued to attempt and place him into handcuffs as the male physically resisted. Law Enforcement personnel were able to eventually handcuff and arrest the male subject.

The male subject was monitored at the scene after being arrested and Law Enforcement personnel determined the male became unresponsive. Restraints were removed from the male as Law Enforcement provided emergency medical treatment at the scene. Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was initiated by Law Enforcement personnel as emergency medical assistance was requested.

Law Enforcement personnel administered Narcan on the male subject and CPR was continued for approximately 5 minutes when emergency medical personal arrived at the scene. Fire and EMS personnel continued life-saving efforts, to include CPR and other emergency medical treatment. Life-saving efforts continued for approximately 25 additional minutes until the male subject was pronounced deceased by medical personnel at the scene.

Since the male subject was in the custody of law enforcement and died during the incident, the County-Wide Fatal-Incident Protocol was initiated. The Mendocino County District Attorney’s Office was contacted and is the lead agency for this ongoing investigation.

A coroner’s investigation was initiated, and a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the official cause and manner of death. The decedent has been identified as a 36-year-old male from Willits, CA, but his name is not being released at this stage of the investigation.

Pursuant to Sheriff’s Office Policy, the two Sheriff’s Office personnel involved in this incident have been placed on paid administrative leave while this matter is being investigated.

Investigations are continuing regarding the crimes committed against the motorist who provided the subject a ride.

Anyone with information related to this investigation is requested to contact the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center at 707-463-4086 (option 1). Information can also be provided anonymously by calling the non-emergency tip-line at 707-234-2100. Any information provided regarding this continuing investigation will be forwarded to the Mendocino County District Attorney’s Office as the primary investigating agency.

It is a well known fact that when you Tase someone and they become unresponsive you administer Narcan.

I can’t wait for them to copsplain that move.
I am sure the investigation into the incident will find all the officers involved followed all department rules and regulations pertaining to the use of Tasers.
Sure would like to see the body cam footage of what really occurred.

You misread the description and are giving misinformation.

You’re both wrong.

The subject was tased:

The male subject physically resisted attempts to place him into handcuffs and assaulted a Deputy so a Taser was deployed to overcome the resistance and arrest the individual.

And Narcan was administered:

The male subject was monitored at the scene after being arrested and Law Enforcement personnel determined the male became unresponsive. Restraints were removed from the male as Law Enforcement provided emergency medical treatment at the scene. Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was initiated by Law Enforcement personnel as emergency medical assistance was requested.

Law Enforcement personnel administered Narcan on the male subject and CPR was continued for approximately 5 minutes when emergency medical personal arrived at the scene.

He actually was tased not once but TWICE after being sprayed I’m sorry but this is using way way to much force and I would also love to see the body camera as well! R.I.P

If you keep resisting and assaulting, the LEO’s keep on keepin’ on with the spraying and tasing until you quit resisting and assaulting. See how that works? Sound it out. Think it through. You might want to write that down for your next party night.

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office and supporting agencies acted decisively and appropriately in responding to a violent situation on June 5, 2025, as detailed in the press release. The hitchhiker’s unprovoked and brutal assault on a driver who offered them a ride posed an immediate threat, resulting in serious injuries requiring hospitalization. When law enforcement arrived, the suspect’s continued aggression, including physically resisting arrest and assaulting a deputy, necessitated the use of a Taser—a standard, less-lethal tool to safely subdue a combative individual. The deputies’ swift response to the initial call and their efforts to protect the public from further harm reflect their commitment to community safety in a volatile situation.

Furthermore, the deputies’ actions following the suspect’s medical emergency demonstrate professionalism and adherence to protocol. Upon the suspect becoming unresponsive after the Taser deployment, deputies promptly initiated life-saving measures, including administering Narcan to address a suspected drug overdose, and called for medical personnel. Despite their efforts, the suspect tragically passed away, but the immediate response to provide aid underscores the deputies’ dedication to preserving life. The activation of the Officer-Involved Fatal Incident Protocol ensures a transparent investigation, which will clarify the circumstances of the death. Based on the facts provided, the officers acted within their training to manage a dangerous encounter while attempting to mitigate harm, and their actions deserve support as the investigation proceeds.

Yeah, and why are all the critics thinking of the assailant who attacked the considerate Good Samaritan who picked up the maniacal hitchhiker and wound up needing medical care himself?
it’s boo-hoo-hoo for the attacker, disregard for his victim, and loathing and contempt for the police who served and protected the public.
No wonder the Country is going to hell on a rocket sled.

Narcan WAS administered. It’s well-known by LEOs to administer Narcan to suspects experiencing seizures and violent behavior. You have to read the entire news report and emphasize comprehension over your own biases against law enforcement.

Everything’s else aside, it angers me when a hitchhiker does this! They ruin it for the many many good people who really need and will be appreciative for a ride!
Keep the faith drivers. Given hitchhikers a good look over, and maybe ask a couple questions before they get in your vehicle. But let’s remember that we can gift people a ride, and help the environment by sharing our modes of transportation!

What questions do you propose asking the hitchhiker before they get into your vehicle?

Whatever questions you need to ask to determine if they are a spun out and potentially violent freak or just a good-natured person in need of a ride

Okay, so you pull over, the hitchhiker runs up to your passenger-side door, and you commence to ask him whatever questions you need to ask to determine if he is a violent freak. Let’s hear some of these questions.

It’s less about the questions than it is to get a reading on the person before you let them in:
‘How far you going?’
‘You going home or to work?’ And/or….
‘Where you live?’
‘Been waiting long?’
‘You mind putting your things in the backseat/ trunk/ bed of the truck?’
‘What happened to your car?’
‘What kinda dog is that?’

What you want to ask/say is:
‘Got a police record?”
‘Have you been in prison before?’
‘Empty your pockets before you get in please’
‘What kinda knife is that in your pocket?’

Whatever it takes to have them look you in the eye, to see if they seem sober and reasonably sane.

You have better ideas?

TBH. I actually didn’t have my car and needed to get somewhere kinda quick recently. I considered hitchhiking. So let’s not write off hitchhikers in general. Okay???

And if you are like me, where my passenger seat is most often covered with things I might need or use on that trip, you ask them to ‘Wait a minute’ (outside the vehicle, which doors have been LOCKED as you pull over. Then you slowly get the stuff moved, as you proceed with the interrogation. 😉

Chances are, they will be an okay, if weary, person who only wants to get down the road……

Do I have better ideas? Yes, and none that involve interviewing a prospective passenger. My belief is that no matter how great you or I may think we are at judging human character, it’s a bad premise to think a man’s intentions can be revealed in a minute, if he is intent upon keeping them under wraps. Bipolar is a quick example. You think you’ve got a happy-go-lucky person on your hands and suddenly it gets dark. My best instinct is to never give a hitchhiker a ride. Too much at stake. Too much to lose.

OK, good luck with that. I honestly respect and admire your humane and compassionate view. It didn’t work out for our compassionate driver this time. I’m too old and been burned enough to be skeptical of everybody and everything. Don’t know if I will live long enough to see us climb out of our current political disaster. Heartbreaking.

He was not hitchhiking. He was walking and his friend rode up to him on a quad and offered him a ride. He was having a mental health crisis. Witnesses at the scene tell a very different story than what this press release says and they have video. There’s way more to this story, and an independent investigation needs to take place, body camera footage needs to be released etc.

How about the part where he beat his ‘friend’ severely enough to require hospitalization — are you saying that didn’t happen?

And are you suggesting the guy was not resisting being cuffed and there was no justification to taser him?

Heartfelt condolences for this young man’s family and friends; be mindful this is a human life he is someone’s son, brother, husband, father and best friend). This is also shocking and disturbing for a small tight knit community of Willits. This incident should create dialogue and this incident should be picked apart every aspect to find out where things went wrong what resources can be improved.
Let’s be honest Mendocino County has its own version of P Diddy in our Administration of Justice System; DA Eyster and DA investigator Andrew Porter just took the Board of Supervisors on a circle jerk thru Judge Ann Moormans courtroom regarding false allegations against Auditor Cubbison. The real cost to tax payer coffers yet to be determined. Trusting the DA and his team to investigate such incidents is like having the fox in then hen house. Let’s not forget the coroner medical examiner have close ties to the local LEO aka MCSO. The community should be vocal in demanding outside investigations into law enforcement related deaths. The local police policing each other has long been the tight knit good old boys club to include partner swapping and I don’t mean between patrol cars and agency swapping while sweeping personnel and personal issues into tidy locked file cabinets and Brady lists written in crayon or disappearing ink.
when the first headline reads police taser then later in the day the next info release says pepper spray you should start to question the devils in the details or cover up.

Thanks for clarifying. Basically they used their arsenal of “non-lethal” tactics pepper spray, taser, narcan, with a healthy dose of good old boy physicality. I don’t see mentioned measure B crisis response for mental health de-escalation.

Nobody mentions the victim who had to be taken to the hospital because of this individual. Condolences to both families but really, always attacking the police who have to deal with these situations is not helping. When dealing with the police it’s probably a good thing to cooperate first then sue later if that’s your thing!

WAIT WHAT??? Now the bigger story comes out, the narrative changes surprising! NOT! Step away and get folks to settle. WHERE WAS THE CRISIS TEAM? They chased him down and killed him. People have a certain sense when death is near. Crying for their mom. Drone footage was caught of the incident by a local teen. No help was called until far after the fact. The footage will go “missing” like the Cubbison email evidence. This is a WILLITS born n raised community member, swallowed by the culture and now bashed in death. SHAMEFUL EVENT FOR OUR TINY TOWN. WE GOTTA DO BETTER ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

I stopped because there was almost always something. Mostly it was that they couldn’t be happy with a free ride and wanted to bum something else from me (smokes, money, weed, beer, food, etc.). Sometimes they smelled like hot garbage. Sometimes they just wouldn’t shut up. Rarely did they simply accept a free ride gratefully and quietly.

I agree that the quality of hitchhikers went downhill these last few decades. Quality of people in general has gone downhill.I blew off a guy hitching into town on the Glendale on ramp yesterday and I felt a little bad about it…I hitchhiked all over the country as a kid and a primary means of transport when I first landed in Mendocino so I do sympathize greatly. But the guy didn’t even have a sign! You’re 5 miles from the split on 101 so are you going Eureka or McVille or just Giuntoli? Signs really help…step up your hitchhiking game, Bro!

The difference is the 101 corridor bumcamp druggies live in a drugged out delusional state of mind residing between San Francisco ghetto hoods like the Mission and Soma and Seattle Washington. An entire transient drug culture that congregates in small towns corrupting all who they come in contact with be it shoplifting, stealing, burglarizing or trading and selling meth and fentanyl

A laminated paper dry erase board would be perfect. One side permanent with something you always want available (peace sign, picture of photo ID they can see, positive info like “I don’t stink.”, etc) and the other blank for immediate goal (for example, “101 North toward Portland”). You could easily show both sides. It would be pretty durable, very lightweight, and roll up for easy transport. Being able and willing to include “I have gas money!” would probably help.

The “hitchiker” was a childhood friend. DUI on a quad. Someone called the cops for the driving stupid n drunk after the HS graduation. Bs ensured, fight, dies right in front of multiple witnesses. His mom was teacher of the year several times. It’s insane how this all came down.

I was in Willits yesterday, a whole new crew of rough looking Highway 101 corridor transients and the drugs they bring to town have arrived; One can always tell cause the street people looked overdosed all over town, and they were all meeting up on South Side of Willits Safeway Parking lot dividing up their drugs that got delivered by a sleek looking white car. The fentanyl grown man “BMX CREW” was there and there was open dealing in the Safeway Parking lot. This combined with all the sirens and excitement of the Graduation Parade created about 2 hours of complete chaos in town with kids and graduates riding around all over town standing up in the beds of pickup trucks and cruising around. Elderly persons were wondering what was going on if there was a fire or what. Spring time warmth has arrived bringing the 101 corridor fentanyl addicts into the towns too cold to reside through the winter. Drugs being dealt in plain view in the community Safeway parking lot with dirty transients and tweakers on BMX bikes. Perhaps it was meth brought to town cause the transients were up roaming town all night long. Hopefully the Willits Police, Mendo Sheriff and Major Crimes Task force can clean up the streets as the 101 Corridor Druggies are back in town. Condolences to the victim and the resisting mans families. Everybody loses when the bad drugs come back to town.

What a hateful, vile, disgusting thing to say. Honestly our community is suffering. The events snowballed so quickly it’s beyond understanding or sense. To say such an ugly thing , folks with attitudes like that are why the world is falling apart. When people are falling apart they don’t need a fist to the head, good tazering, pepper spray and to be held prone. In any mental health response training, textbook or webinar this is not a recommended way to support a soul when they are struggling. When people struggle they often are not calm. Not thinking clear to yeild proper response. Response requires compassion for your fellow man that so many lack these days.
Be kind.

This is the second death caused by local law enforcement in this exact manner within months in Mendocino county. The first happened in the creek behind kohls in ukiah where once again they tasered someone having a mental health crisis due to rampant drug use, and killed him under a bridge where nobody could see or hear him. Judge, Jury, and Executioner of people that are sick, and weak mentally is the road that only a coward walks. And I hope the universe sends it back a thousand fold.
