Slope Failure Damages Women’s Clubs Grove Parking Lot After Extreme Weather

Press release from the California Department of Parks and Recreation:
The photo above shows the embankment slope failure at California Federation of Women’s Clubs Grove Day-use parking lot. Embankment instabilities including cracks, slides, and depressions are a result of the natural impacts of extreme weather, including heavy rainfall and flooding events.

The photo above shows the embankment slope failure at California Federation of Women’s Clubs Grove Day-use parking lot. Embankment instabilities including cracks, slides, and depressions are a result of the natural impacts of extreme weather, including heavy rainfall and flooding events.

In the interest of public safety, the California Federation of Women’s Clubs Grove Day-Use parking lot and road at Humboldt Redwoods State Park will be closed to vehicle traffic until further notice. This closure is necessary for public safety and access issues related to bank erosion affecting the parking lot and surrounding areas. The partial closure order will only impact vehicle access to the parking lot. The day-use area will remain open to pedestrians, but parking near California Federation of Women’s Clubs Grove is very limited and may require a short walk to enter.

Visitors should not park in front of any gates or block emergency vehicle access. To access the grove, visitors can park at the pullout across State Route 254 (Avenue of the Giants) which can accommodate up to three vehicles. Alternative day-use and swimming access in the park include Garden Club Grove, three miles south, or Williams Grove Day-use, seven miles south, where all vehicles are subject to an $8 day-use fee. LOL… When did a normal Humboldt County winter become extreme?

That mud that the parking lot was built on got there from the river, it just took some back.

If they want extreme, I do believe the ’64 flood high water sign is not too far away, and much higher up the hillside than what’s left of this little patch of asphalt.

Yeah. The thing is, those of us who remember the Christmas floods are older than dirt. They were 60 years ago. Younger people know about the floods, but they are something that happened that they only know from hearing, reading, etc. about them. If they know about them at all.

Sort of like people that were born after the navy listening base at Centerville had long been closed. And that the bluff and beach there used to be considerably larger. They’ll only know it as long as Drone videos of the slides stay in circulation. If it weren’t for a hanging fence post on a bluff edge, or a rusted mailbox found on a beach, some people would never know things were different.

“Older than dirt”… Yep. I was 10 during the 1955 flood. No one expected it to flood as bad as it did.

Ten years later we had the 1964 flood. It rained way harder than the ’55 flood. We were scared badly knowing what was to come. We were right, it was a worse flood. But, we were more prepared after having seen the ’55.

Geological records show that we have had way worse floods than even the ’55 and ’64. We are just dust in the wind, or should I say, “Bubbles in a flood”.

I am not older than dirt and I sure remember the floods that destroyed homes, business, farms, farm animals, etc. Sadly, they took a toll on many human lives. Some of the poor souls were never found again. Buried in rubble, mud, debris from homes, etc. May all those that were lost continue to RIP.

In that summer of ’64… they had just finished improving one of the groves down there… (it might have been this one). Put in nice parking lot, rest rooms, showers etc. Pride of the Avenue.

The 1964 flood… wiped it out.

Oh well.

It’s just the way language everywhere about everything is now. I think it started with all the kids saying “Awesome!” about okay but mundane activities. Then the hype just kept building…for decades….

Rainfall ? Eh ? The river is moving.
It has been doing that for a… million years or so.

Too bad, that parking lot was a great 👍 place to play Jacky sack in the eighties.

I have a love hate relationship with spellcheck. I am a terrible speller, but sometimes it corrects my “mistakes” that weren’t really mistakes. DANG!

You mean “Auto Correct”?

Turn that off in Keyboard Settings. (One of the first settings I change. :))

Messages can still be (manually) Spell Checked.

First thing I do with a new device. I am quite capable of making my own mistakes 🙄

That has been failing for years. What a shame to lose parking at such a favorite spot. I’ve been to weddings and birthdays there over a quarter of a century
