By Sue Leskiw, Contest Coordinator
Some 818 school kids pulled out paints, pencils, pastels, or paste to enter the 22nd Annual Student Bird Art Contest. Cosponsors were Friends of the Arcata Marsh and Redwood Region Audubon Society.
The contest was held in association with mid-April’s Godwit Days Spring Migration Bird Festival in Arcata. All entries were displayed at the Arcata Community Center for public viewing during the festival.
Copies of 2025’s cash prize and honorable mention winning artwork will be on display at the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center during May and June. Winners were spread across 30 different schools! Public viewing is possible Tuesdays through Sundays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. and Mondays from 1 to 5 p.m.
A downloadable booklet containing the artwork and photos from the April 19 awards ceremony will be posted sometime in May at www.godwitdays.org, www.rras.org, and www.arcatamarshfriends.org.
Awards totaled $750, with 47 cash prizes plus 39 honorable mentions. Depending on the number of entries per grade, some levels were combined and others received more than one set of awards, to even out the chances of winning.

All are great, far better than I could do. Of the pictures above, the Red-breasted Nuthatch by Grades K-1 First Place winner Lily Varzgah impresses me most; she’s a mere 6-7 years old.
I can see why the Steller’s Jay by Grades 6&7 Second Place winner David Grienauer was chosen for the press release top art; a fantastically nice piece of art. I keep going back to look at it. But, oh my golly, despite the pleasant childhood memories “Blue” Jays bring to the surface, I do so hate those squawk mocking, fruit and berry stealing, thieves. Don’t mind me David, keep up your art, it truly is wonderful.
These young artists have learned early on that a bird’s bill is one key identifier of its species. How clever.
