College of the Redwoods has hired Bree Northern as the new Women’s Basketball Coach. Northen will replace Jain Tuey who has served as the head coach since 2017. Northern is a standout athlete with deep ties to the local community, and has a rich history with CR, having been a key player under Coach Tuey from 2018 to 2020.

“We want to thank Jain sincerely for her outstanding service and commitment to the program and department over the past seven years. She has been instrumental in the growth and culture of the women’s team both on the court and in the classroom, and experienced great success with three playoff appearances and a GVC championship in 2019-20”, said Athletic Director Bob Brown. “We are also extremely grateful that an alum of Jain’s program is starting her own head coaching journey here at CR”.

Northern, a 2018 graduate of Arcata High School, was awarded All-HDN (Humboldt-Del Norte) during her senior season. At College of the Redwoods, she was a starting point guard on the 2019-2020 Golden Valley Conference championship team, earning GVC All-Freshman honors and 1st Team All-Conference recognition as a sophomore before graduating with an AA in Liberal Arts.

She continued her basketball career at Simpson University, where she made an immediate impact in her second season as a Red Hawk as the team’s main ball handler. Northern led the team in nearly every major statistical category, including the most minutes played, three-pointers made, assists, steals, and total points, averaging 11 points per game. She was recognized as a 2nd Team All-Conference selection in 2022 for her efforts on the court.

After graduating with a degree in Political Science, Northern transitioned to coaching, serving as an assistant coach at Simpson University from 2022 to 2024. Her experience as both a player and coach at the collegiate level makes her an ideal fit to lead the Women’s Basketball program at CR.

“We are excited to welcome Bree back to lead the women’s basketball program,” said Assistant Director of Athletics, Ryan Bisio. “With her stellar history as a high-character Corsair, Bree is the perfect fit to guide us into the future, bringing her ambitious energy to both our department and the student-athletes she develops.” CR President Keith Flamer echoed this enthusiasm, stating, “We are thrilled to have Coach Bree Northern at College of the Redwoods. I am confident she understands what it takes to achieve both academic and athletic excellence, and we look forward to all we will accomplish together.”
