The Flying Burrito Brothers…..yet again….maybe we could just do away with the licensing, insurance, and assumption of ability requirement as none of it seems to make a bit of difference. Make it just like the implied consent law for DUI….you get in a vehicle and drive on state highways you’re on your own….you are anyway.

We need the EPD out on the streets of Eureka using radar and citations to slow and monitor traffic. The traffic situation has become dangerous from lack of enforcement.

Maybe we could adopt the German requirements for obtaining a driving license…..of course no one in this state would qualify. Germany has the safest roads in the world.

According to this, Germany is the 16th down the list of safe drivers. Surprising it came in that low with their large alcohol consumption and the virtually unlimited speeding on some roads. But of course the average driver in Germany also drives about half as many miles as the average in the US.

I read somewhere that German roads are the safest but when accidents occur they’re the worst because of higher speeds….

Driving the Autobahn is amazing because of the speeds they drive with few problems. They’re good drivers! On two lane roads, if they want to pass, they flash their lights, and people just move over and let them drive down the middle!!! Headlights are used to signal, and EVERYONE is cool with it all, no road rage….Italy, well, they’re wild! And the FOOD. Travel to Europe, highly recommended.

There are areas without speed limits on the Autobahn but they’re short stretches between towns. Most of the Autobahn (freeway) has speed limits around the equivalent of 50MPH with automatic ticket cams!

Since when ? Back in the late 90s even the frontage roads were non restricted . One thing to note if you get rear ended in the left lane it is your fault for not moving out of the way of faster traffic . Also there are minimum speed laws as well , meaning if you are to old to keep up you cant be on the road. I am all for German traffic laws .
the other day i was in the right lane when someone was attempting to merge onto a hwy , i could not change lanes so i maintained my speed , the merging driver ran onto the shoulder and then flipped me off followed me aggressively and had the balls to claim that i took his right of way . Funny how people falsely think that because they have to merge onto a hwy everyone is required to yield to them , yet the laws clearly state those merging must yield to traffic already on the road meaning those who are already on the hwy have the right of way over those attempting to merge with or onto the hwy . I have even encountered commenters on this blog with panties bunched because someone had the gall to not yield their right of way when someone else was attempting merge onto the 101 . Try reading traffic laws before driving on the roads and if you are bot clear in your understanding enroll in a driving class

Even though I have the right-of-way, I ease off the accelarator. It takes so little effort to be courteous (and safe). How hard is it to help someone merge in lanes that are sometimes very short?

I hear Japan is very extremely stringent with their licensing requirements. Many have to take the test several times before passing.

IIRC, if you kill someone with your car, even if the victim ran out in front of you, you go to prison. Basically, you’re better off walking or taking one of their amazing trains.

EPD does not do traffic enforcement. No personal. And the CHP is a joke. Not sure what function they even preform. Maybe time to disband the CHP. Save a lot of money.

The CHP is responsible for enforcement on highways and county roads. City roadways are responsibilities of the city. Many cities have requested CHP to conduct traffic enforcement within the city limits. If you are unsure of their function, maybe look into it before calling for defunding or disbanding. The city council is responsible for the lack of traffic safety in Eureka.

Their “enforcement” dosen’t seem to have an effect. Should be some spillover. Nobody lives on a highway or county road.

Actually I’ve seen stories on local news and other places they’re asking people to apply. If people don’t apply for the job and finish the course there aren’t new officers entering the police force

Money. It’s getting much harder to recruit LE. Standards are higher and some LE are actually getting charged with murder. Don’t get to beat heads and kill people so easily anymore…..once you’re held accountable for your actions LE isn’t such an attractive proposition.

I spent 30+ years in Law Enforcement and never beat heads or killed anyone. It’s a dangerous, demanding and challenging vocation but never a license to kill.

If a grant to hire an officer for traffic control was convenient, having one patrol throughout Eureka at least a few times per week would help.

Country Joe, it is not the lack of enforcement, but the lack of officers. EPD needs to bolster its force by obtaining more qualified officers to patrol or streets. I don’t know the EPD budget, but they need to have it increased to cover the cost of new officers, vehicles, etc. You are very correct in saying our streets now are extremely dangerous due to a lack of enforcement. We have enough folks injured or killed every year, and it needs to stop NOW!

There are people in those cars, the one in Henderson Center was struck by a drunk driver convicted of 5 traffic violations including having had his license pulled before he got on the road drunk that day.

If a grant is not available for another officer, perhaps radar to alert law enforcement could get the worst offenders off the road.

ba common or overused theme or device

Although in the case of “Defund he Police”, it was more imaginary than figurative

One thing is that modern cars are overpowered for what they do. Granny’s grocery getter today would win the LeMans 100 years ago. 90%of the time we only use about 10%of the motor’s power. Many drivers over accelerate, just to pound the brakes in hundred feet at a stop light .
This is where autonomous driving of a sort might actually make sense. So far it’s been inexplicably, predominantly linked with electric vehicles. The autonomy is designed around enabling drivers to tune out. Seems like we could link to cars as they hit the city, and govern their speed to not exceed the set limits.

Car manufacturers love it; the bigger and more overpowered (and over-gadgeted) a vehicle is, the more profit for them.

I’ve seen a few places that encourage golf carts for around-town errands. They’re certainly more efficient, and much easier to park.

The lanes are weird right there, R lane only goes towards Target, odd merge if you just want to go over bridge. Confused lane markers begin on Myrtle side of that intersection. I have often thought if you were from out of town you would be confused.

This is what happens you get when so many trying to turn Humboldt into another SF bay area. you get more crime and more city drivers driving like they are still down below in those filthy cities. No respect for the traffic laws, let alone any other laws.

My favorite part is how the walk signal on the south side of the intersection is timed with the left turn signal on Myrtle. I almost got hit once; I was able to backpedal fast enough that the driver in the big pickup, determined not to miss that signal, roared past me. He stopped for a moment, saw me still standing, and took off.

It’s at least that bad on 5th St. where there isn’t even a left turn signal; people just make their turns at speed while I’m trying to cross Myrtle.

I’ve long said that Caltrans makes good freeways and horrible streets.
