[UPDATE Sunday: One Way Traffic Control] Highway 299 Closed West of Redding Due to Fire Ignited This Afternoon
A fast-moving vegetation fire, now named the Lower Fire, erupted in Shasta County earlier today, prompting road closures, including key sections of Highway 299, and evacuations. The blaze, which began around 3:55 p.m. on Lower Springs Road near Eureka Way, is spreading at a moderate pace, according to Cal Fire’s Shasta-Trinity Unit.
The fire is currently under investigation, and no incident management team has been assigned as of the latest update. Firefighters are actively working to contain the fire which, according to the latest report, has consumed at least 110 acres west of Redding.
Due to the fire, the following roads have been closed:
- Highway 299 at Buenaventura Boulevard
- Highway 299 at Rock Creek Road
- Iron Mountain Road at Keswick Dam
- Lower Springs Road at Swasey Drive
- Swasey Drive at Placer Road
- Swasey Drive at Red Bluff Road
According to the county’s evacuation notification system, Zonehaven Aware, now known as Genasys Protect, evacuation orders (Level 3 – Go) have been issued for zones KES-2760, KES-2770, KES-2780, KES-2790, SHS-2800, SHS-2820, SHS-2830, SHS-2850, SHS-2870, SHS-6520, SHS-6530-A, SHS-6530-B, SHS-6540-A, and SHS-6540-B. Additionally, evacuation warnings (Level 2 – Set) are in effect for zones KES-2750, KES-2900, SHS-2880, and SHS-2890. Click the Genasys Protect map below for details.
Residents are advised to avoid these areas and stay updated on evacuation zones and further road closures by visiting the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) Facebook page or by visiting the Genasys Protect system by clicking the map above. To sign up for emergency alerts, visit the SCSO website.
For those that have evacuated due to the fire, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office states, “An Evacuation Shelter has been established at Central Valley High School. 4066 La Mesa Avenue, City of Shasta Lake.”
On their Facebook page, Caltrans District 2 states, “There is no estimated time on when the roadway will be reopened.” RHBB has reached out to Caltrans for details on the closure along with suggested alternate routes. We will provide additional updates as new information becomes available.

It would be super helpful if these maps had overlays of known landmarks. I’m always stumped why such important information is left with such ambiguous firespeak.

Yes, those zonehaven maps seem totally disorienting-I never know what they are trying to describe.
