Hoopa Valley Tribal Police Officer Commended for Efforts in Missing Child Search

Found icon Found featureIn a recent commendation letter, Officer Shirley Yanez of the Hoopa Valley Tribal Police Department was recognized for her exceptional efforts in locating a missing child at Acorn Camp on July 25. The letter, written by Ashtyn Colegrove, Program Manager at the NDN Center, highlights Officer Yanez’s dedication and tireless work during the search operation.

According to Colegrove, Officer Yanez promptly responded to a request for assistance in the early hours of July 25. She met with camp officials, obtained a description of the missing child, and immediately began a thorough search. Her efforts included contacting the child’s parents, who were unreachable by phone and lived 35 minutes away on Bald Hill. Officer Yanez drove to their location to inform them in person and then returned to continue the search.

Throughout the night, Officer Yanez searched the campground, scaled the mountainside, and combed the riverside for any signs of the missing child. Her commitment stood out, especially in comparison to other officers who conducted brief searches before departing. “[H]er efforts were unmatched,” wrote Colegrove. Officer Yanez not only stayed in constant communication with camp staff but also coordinated with Humboldt County Search and Rescue to ensure continued efforts.

The search concluded successfully, with the child found safe and unharmed.

Chief Ramos of the Hoopa Valley Tribal Police Department praised Officer Yanez’s actions in a social media post, stating, “It is this type of effort that is appreciated by the public of Officers going above and beyond what is expected. It is my goal as Chief of Police to ensure that is the standard of what the Hoopa Valley Tribal Police Department is recognized for.”

Thank you, Officer Yanez, for searching so diligently for this child. I’m sure the parents are very grateful, as all parents should be when someone’s hard work results in their child being found.
