Press release from the Garberville CHP:

On July 12, 2024, at approximately 1242 hours, a 2004 Infinity G35 was traveling southbound on SR-254, south of Madrona Road. For reasons still under investigation the driver allowed the Infinity to travel off the west roadway edge of SR-254. The Infinity then reentered the roadway and drove across the southbound and northbound lane of SR-254. The Infinity left the east roadway edge of SR-254 and collided with a ditch causing the Infinity to become airborne and overturn across a dirt driveway. The Infinity came to rest on all four tires on a ditch, along the east shoulder of SR-254, facing a northerly direction.

During the overturn, the driver was ejected from the vehicle and came to rest on the east shoulder of SR-254, south of the Infinity’s final resting point. The juvenile passenger self-extricated from the Infinity.

The driver of the Infinity was pronounced deceased at the scene by medical personnel. The passenger was transported by City Ambulance to St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka. It remains under investigations whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in this investigation. The identity of the driver is being witheld until next of kin is notified.

This crash is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, Garberville Area.

Condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

I won’t speculate on the cause of the wreck but it’s a tragic loss under any circumstances.

But it’s worth noting the driver wasn’t using a seat belt while the passenger was – and the odds of surviving a wreck are better if people stay with the car.

So sad. 13 year old girl was passenger, 23 year old guy was driver. Wonder if we’ll get the story behind this tragedy.

Mine too. But let’s not play naive like this sort of accident happens doing posted speed limits and driving clear minded. Fairly tired of all the blazze around driving impaired……. it’s been a big issue for a long time. While surr it may sound better if this isn’t a DUI crash but does it? People need to drive like lives depend on it. See it everyday on 101, you have people weaving all over the place, because some vote blue jackhole wants to play cop and mess up traffic for 10 miles so they can “pass” the car they been along side the entire time. Whole lot of dumb on the road and it’s really time to stop sweeping it under the road in turn of walking on eggshells for the fragile minded…. sorry that I’m not sorry and more pissed off around the complacency of these types of incidents.

regardless of what you think and speculate, its unnecessary to put comments like this when people have lost a child, brother, friend, etc. have some respect and common decency for others. Shame on you for even thinking your negativity was appropriate in a time like this. honestly, its people like you that make this world so cruel.

You might consider giving your rant on a post other than one notifying the comunity of the death of a young local person who’s family may well be reading this.

The first thing I thought was brother and sister…I’m 10-15 years older then my little sister and my 3 brothers!! You can’t always assume they’re sexual involved with each other!!! Was more than likely her brother I’m thinking!!! It’s sad that we lost a 23 year old today to driving crazy so let’s not put out any other accusations!!

Gets? Dude seriously know the roads your trying to speak on and posted limits. Max speed on he Ave is 55 depending on location and 45 through most of it. You’re not doing this to a car at those speeds. But double them? Absolutely…….. How about we inject competence to the condo and try and use this as a reality check…..

I lived on the avenue. And kids with cars drive at 65 70 in-between Miranda and garberville. I drive fast put they push it a little harder then I want. Most of them stay on the road and I hope their not to impaired driving to and from school. And one thing we do agree on is seat belts save lives. Saved mine at seventeen. And it was a crappy 70s lapbelt. Rolled 3 times and walked away with a broken finger

The speed limit on the Avenue is only reduced through the towns; P’ville, Miranda, Myers Flat & Redcrest. The manority by far is 55 MPH. 254 is a state highway

This is speculation and I will go there because I don’t have any reason to suspect drugs or alcohol. Ever drop something and try to get it while driving, then lose your position in the lane? Again speculation but i think the said car wandered and overcorrected.it rolled into the ditch. Again sympathies to al involved . Thank to our volunteers in Miranda.

A lot of youngsters out there driving these cars. More horsepower than they can handle. See them all around Mckinleyville. They think they’re really cool, not realizing that the whole neighborhood HATES them! Take it to the race track, kids, before you kill an innocent bystander!!!

Too bad there isn’t a racetrack anywhere within a hundred miles in any direction just the samoa drag strip that’s only open now and then. Perhaps humboldt county should invest in a track. Could be a decent tourist draw if done correctly.

These guys don’t want to do that shit, they want to use the complaint as a method to justify their bs backroad behavior. They’ll complain it’s only once a month……

Or people drive appropriately. Yall some low iq you feel entitled to endangering everyone else’s lives so you can what? Get excited? Grow tf up. Not the county’s fault yall picked a hobby that you have no actual place to use it…. that’s an intelligence problem.

I’m so sorry for the life of the 23 yr old. Just a couple years older than my kid. Seatbelts save lives! I’m so glad the 13 yr old was able to escape that wreck with only minor injuries. It was rough to see for sure. R.I.P.

The car is 20 years old. This could be a mechanical failure. Don’t jump to conclusions about causation. Condolences to the family.

Lots of cars older than that without any issues. Now you go 2x over posted speedlimits and the factors go wildly against you. Don’t jump to conclusions like enabling stupidity……… same dude not wearing a belt probably not making a lot of other decent decisions….. been driving junk cars my adult life this type of thing is only a freak incident to people who wish to remain oblivious.

Didn’t think about that too long did you….. and yeah there is bs in the air on this… may not be a pedo thing as siblings have wide age ranges but all the rest, math is mathing…… yours? Not so much.

I would also like to point out to People who think that drugs and or alcohol had a roll I want to say the Olympic snow boarding committee declared Marijuana as a performance enhancing drug and took a guys gold medal away. True fact I think they should have let the other participants partake. Probably would have changed their mind on the matter.

It’s time for a hard conversation. It’s correct that I don’t know what happened and I don’t know the people involved. However, if you are operating a vehicle with your seatbelt on, while paying attention, while doing the speed limit, your vehicle generally should not go off the road and eject you and kill you. Can we all agree with that statement? My condolences to the family/families involved and friends for their loss. I am a paramedic and there are fire fighters and law enforcement in my immediate family. I can assure you that there is also a tremendous amount of weight and stress put on first responders that have to deal with the trauma and aftermath of these scenes. Assisting the coroner with putting dead bodies in body bags not just once, but time and again can get quite overwhelming. The PTSD and anxiety they develop just because they try to help those who need it most is something nobody should have to do. I am not trying to take away from this terrible situation, but education does need to happen to hopefully prevent another tragedy. Again, I am truly sorry for this terrible loss.

I have found that I have pre conceived assumptions.thats why I like to travel, I found it pops the bubble. Like thinking peru has Mexican food or that I was going to be the only white guy in Thailand. Although I was the only white guy in a large area of cambodia. Well of the tourist trail. I wanted to throw in on the racing. Personally I think a road track.but it could be for something like winston minis or shift carts .

The decline in skills of today’s drivers is directly proportional to the ending of funding for mandatory driver’s training. Bring it back.

When was there mandatory drivers training. Certainly not decades ago when I started driving

When I went to South Fork in the 80’s we had a driver’s education class although, I don’t remember if it was a mandatory class or not.

We would take turns driving the Avenue & the Highway.

Stopping at Deb’s for ice cream in Garberville, then back to school.

I do remember it being free, not like these days where you have to pay hundreds of dollars just to learn to drive.

So sad that another young person died because of driving skills, regardless if there is any drugs or alcohol involved.
We don’t know the circumstances but I’m almost positive speeding was a factor.

A full decade earlier we had Driver’s Education class in summer school.

Had to have a valid learner’s permit.

Taught in a trailer with a dozen driver simulators, with realistic car controls like full-size steering wheel with turn signals, accelerator and brake pedals, headlight switches, emergency flasher switch, even windshield wipers(!), and big video screens. Instructor leading us through simulation videos.

We were shown very gory films of car accident aftermaths.

Afterward we got to drive real cars accompanied by instructor and fellow students. First in a big parking lot before we were allowed on the street. We learned parallel parking. Looking and signaling our intentions to other vehicles. Right and left turns. Following distance. After we gained competency we went for short freeway excursions, learning how to enter, exit, pass, & etc..

Pass/Fail iirc.

You mean the insurance their parents had to pay, if they could afford it. At the time when I went to South Fork High, I had a few friends who lived in the mountains where there were no jobs for the kids and very few for the parents. Mostly log truck drivers or small lumber mill workers. Most are gone now, but the jobs are still hard to find. We had Driver’s Education, but no discounts were ever offered.

When I was a kid we had a class in school we attended, after school two of us would switch off in a driver’s ed car (brakes and gas pedal on pass. Side also). We had to pass this class (1 semester) in order to get a drivers permit at 151/2. We could get a license with this after driving six months on a permit
Without this class you would have to wait until age 18 to obtain a license.
Also, you could ride a motorcycle with a permit. I rode mine to school only to have to park in the bike rack as I didn’t have a license to get in the school parking lot.

I am so very sorry that the accident happened and claimed the life of a 23-year-old boy. Thank God the 13-year-old passengers’ life was spared. In the CHP REPORT OF COLLISION, it showed the young man was not wear his seat belt, and the young lady was. My sincere condolences to the young man’s family and friends for their great loss. I pray the young lady will heal quickly from her physical wounds, but the memory of that tragedy will linger on her mind for quite some time.

It would be more appropriate to identify the 23 year old as a man & not a “boy”. The 13 year old as child & not a “young lady”.

Perhaps calling grown man “boys” keeps perpetuating irresponsible behavior among men in society?

I drove by & saw the crashed car. It appeared that the driver may had been driving at a high speed rate.

The girl is lucky to be alive, but likely to be traumatized for life. It begs the question: “why was she in that man’s car & driving south?”

The girl’s parents must be relieved she is alive. Poor girl. I feel very sorry for her & the 23 yo’s family.

The driver was going at a high rate of speed with a minor who did not have permission to be there, and who is unrelated to the driver in the car. This is a parent’s worst nightmare, and totally avoidable.
