Tree-Cutting Accident Turns Fatal Near Laytonville
A man tragically died after a tree fell on him while he was cutting wood near Branscomb Road, west of Laytonville, yesterday afternoon.
Laytonville Fire Chief Matt Matheson confirmed that the man, whose name has not yet been released, was a civilian and not affiliated with any logging company.
The first reports of the incident yesterday came in around 12:40 p.m. when scanner traffic indicated that a man had been seriously injured by a falling treetop. The remote location of the accident made access challenging for emergency responders.
First responders arrived quickly and assessed the man’s condition. Due to the severity of his injuries and the difficult terrain, it was determined that air evacuation was necessary.
By 1:12 p.m., rescuers were carrying the injured man to a designated landing zone, where a Reach air ambulance helicopter landed at 1:23 p.m. Despite the rapid response, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Captain Quincy Cromer of the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a coroner was dispatched to the location.
Tree falling incidents are a significant cause of injuries and fatalities, particularly in tree care and logging industries. Struck-by incidents are not limited to tree care professionals; they can also affect bystanders and individuals performing non-professional tree work, as seen in the tragic incident near Laytonville.

Prayers for his loved ones.
I am so very sorry that the gentleman was killed by a falling treetop while he was cutting wood. With the noise of the chainsaw, he probably never heard it coming. My condolences to his family and friends. Thank you to all the first responders for doing all you could to help save his life. Thank you to Reach air ambulance for their fast response.
Oh my god…Westport has the rumor of who it is…If so this guy was a dear friend and a good man. He taught me how to move and mill logs, stack lumber and work wood- a real lover of wood and all it’s beautiful grains and patterns…a master woodworker. A big loss for us all…

Thank you. Just as I feared.
R.I.P. sir.
This is a sad story. I’m puzzled, though, as to why the man is described as a civilian. Unless he was a member of the military in active service, he was a civilian. And despite the jackboot dreams of law enforcement, until we have a paramilitary police, they, too, are civilians. As are firefighters. As are all non-military publicly employed people. So it seems an odd distinction to make.
See meaning two:
-a person who is not on active duty with a military, naval, police, or fire fighting organization.
-Informal. anyone regarded by members of a profession, interest group, society, etc., as not belonging; nonprofessional; outsider:
We need a producer to run the movie studio, not some civilian from the business world.
-a person versed in or studying Roman or civil law.https://www.dictionary.com/browse/civilian
I’ve been wondering this same thing for decades.
Set the beer down and walk away. Perhaps back to your meds.
That’s how my great-great-grandfather died, at the age of 25. And it wasn’t even a big, majestic redwood, it was some puny pine down in Alabama.
