Motorists traveling on State Route 299 near Helena should prepare for significant delays on today and tomorrow as crews work to clean up the site of a truck crash from earlier this month. According to Caltrans, delays of up to 30 minutes can be expected near post mile 36, just west of Helena, while workers remove a truck and trailer from the bottom of an embankment and repair guardrail

Crash at Pigeon PointThe crash occurred on May 17 at about 5:50 p.m., when a semi-truck carrying what appeared to be trash veered off the roadway and into the Trinity River. According to a CHP report, the driver managed to extricate himself from the vehicle but he was injured.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, and Trinity County Life Support initially began transporting the driver to the hospital. CHP Northern Division helicopter H-16 later airlifted the driver to Mercy Medical Center in Redding. Alcohol and drugs are not suspected to have contributed to the collision.

In the days after the accident, crews dressed in white hazmat suits were seen filling large white bags with debris, which was then lifted up the riverbank by crane.

The cleanup operations are continuing, and today, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., crews will work to remove the truck and trailer from the embankment.

On Friday, May 31, additional work will take place to repair the guardrail damaged in the crash. During this time, one-way traffic control will be in place, but Caltrans says that delays will be minimal compared to the previous day.

I sure hope the trucker and/or his company have good insurance to pay for that damn mess. Nothing like waiting in line for 30 minutes while the Caltrans crew in hazmat suits cleans up garbage. I am glad to read that the trucker was able to get out of the cab and did not end up dead in the river. A scary ride down for sure.

Good luck with his insurance, he was driving a 2003 peterlicker, that would be a non- compliant truck in the great state of California. That truck is not registerable in this great state anymore. This truck was illegally on the road and causing great damage to the atmosphere due to its high Nox output. This driver just saved the planet by crashing it, crack me up. Did he have insurance? Crack me up. That’s why caltans is cleaning it up, so we taxpayers got it covered.

It was my understanding that all diesel cars and trucks have until 2035 to meet all the jackass regulations in California. With that in mind there is no reason the truck can’t be insured.

We all voted to pull all trucks off the highways by 2023 if they don’t have an aftertreatment system that uses def. That would be any truck built before 2012, if it’s older than a 2011 ,crush it, it’s not green enough, crack me up. These new trucks are way more maintenance, way more fuel, way more parts running, way more break downs, way more back up trucks, way more parked 5 gal. Of fuel regens, crack me up. It’s just wayyyy greener.

The DEF system can be installed on older trucks making them legal.

NOPE: CARB/Newsome/Bonta won’t allow that.

All trucks with an engine older than model year 2010 are now banned in California, per the California Air Resources Board’s Truck and Bus document release.

Some trucks might get a ‘completely’ new engine. The older engine has to have the block ‘destroyed’ (removal servise has to punch a whole in it). Supposed to prevent engines being ‘shipped out of state’ to continue their service.
That has led a growth of ‘out of state’ block repair shops that put the blocks back in service. (heh)

Go figure.

Caltrans doesn’t clean up hazardous materials. This will be a contract crew.

Many times, it is the Caltrans workers that pick-up oil, gas, diesel, etc. You can’t tell me that is not hazardous stuff.

Eh ? Looks like household trash.
Lots of people in the world make a (sort of) living by going through that stuff.

Likely contract workers. No CalTrans orange hats. No CalTrans hi-viz suits.

No they don’t always. Another licensed company may have that option. E.p.a.gets involved and it’s fixed. Environment is saved.

We ship a lot of trash out of this county and on up to Oregon. I am surprised this doesn’t happen more often.

Yes, ship it great distance to put it in a landfill so we can pat ourselves on the back for shutting down our nasty landfill.
