Providence Hospitals in Humboldt County Triumph with Successful Nursing Hiring Event, Securing 40 New Hires

Press release from Providence:

Providence nursesProvidence hospitals in Humboldt County successfully completed their annual nursing hiring event on May 16, a key initiative in strengthening staff levels at both Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka (SJE) and Providence Redwood Memorial Hospital (RMH).

The event, which saw a total of 97 RSVPs from interested applicants primarily hailing from Humboldt County and the College of the Redwoods Nurse Program, was the first in-person interview session held since before the Covid-19 pandemic, signifying a return to a more personal and interactive approach to hiring.

“We’re thrilled with the outcome, which not only attracted a high number of qualified applicants but also underscored our commitment to supporting our nursing staff and ultimately, our community.” said Sarah Park, RN, MSN, interim chief nursing officer.

A total of 44 nurses were interviewed during the event, resulting in 40 job offers being extended, showcasing the hospital’s commitment to recruiting top talent in the field.

Notably, first year nurse turnover (FITO) ratios – the number of nurses who leave their role within the first year – was 17% in 2023 at SJE and RMH. A 2023 report from NSI Nursing Solutions, states that 33% of new hospital nurses leave their jobs within the first year, 16% higher than SJE and RMH.

Park shares part of the success in Humboldt is due to the Clinical Academy Transition into Practice program that “supports the professional development of recently graduated residents and new-to-specialty (fellows) nurses and provides an integrated, consistent structure for mentoring, nurse onboarding and development.”

The program ensures Providence has a stable nursing workforce and helps fill the gap of our current nursing shortage. It also helps provide reliably prepared nurses for hard-to-fill specialty positions and advanced practice nursing roles, which are essential for Providence’s growth and new care models.

Great to read that so many of these new nurses are local and know what they are getting into. Congratulations to each one of these people.

Turnover at St Joe’s runs about 45% at 3 months…

Many of these hires are “travelers”.

Lots of new nurses work 6 months and then get higher paying jobs elsewhere…

Seen it happen everywhere in Humboldt, Trinity, Hoopa and Mendocino…

Nobody works where the pay sucks and the management is awful.

Your reading comprehension seems challenged. Please go back and read the article again. Or are you just being obtuse?

Obtuse… No, but I have worked for this outfit…

I stayed 5 months as a “Per Diem”, with no benefits. Made $38/hour, and was harassed by a coworker, had no “on-site” supervisor, and they tried to force me to “convert”…

I finally refused to be a Catholic, and my hours were cut to zero, and I told them to stick it up their asses and got work in Chico, at $46/hour… Almost immediately. With benefits.

Providence is an evil corporation, but there is always a class of newbies about to graduate…

You will find them out in the hall, at 0200, crying…

Working in a hospital isn’t easy, and no fun at all. Working for Providence should smarten up the 40 “new hires”, if they pass the HR Department BS…

Providence HR is the worst in the industry, and they break employment laws constantly, so retain a good attorney before reporting, and record every meeting with Supervisors and HR Reps…

And baby, I’ve seen it all…

Who tried to convert you? I just do not believe your accusations. I have worked there for over 20 years and have never heard anything like this. I truly believe you are a troll.

I hope this will facilitate a return to proper nurse to patient ratios that have been severly cut back in recent years
