The public is invited to attend a celebration at noon on Friday, April 26th at the corner of 7th and G Streets in Eureka to recognize this month’s Humboldt Hero, SPC Fire Control Sargent, Nathan Myers.

Nathan was born in Paradise, California in 1985, and his family moved to Mad River California in 1990.  At the age of 20, he joined the Army in January of 2005 as a 13 D Fire Direction Control Specialist.

Nathan’s first duty station was at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska.  He was in the 4th Battalion 11th Field Artillery 172nd Stryker Brigade.  He was deployed to Iraq in August of 2005 and redeployed in November of 2006.

From there, Nathan was assigned to Fort Lewis, Washington, where he was in the 3rd Battalion 17th Field Artillery 5th Stryker Brigade 2nd infantry Division (DIV).  He was again deployed to Afghanistan in July of 2009 and redeployed in June of 2010.

Nathan’s unit was re-designated and deployed to Afghanistan in May of 2012 and redeployed in January 2013. He was then assigned to Fort Sill, Oklahoma until he was honorably discharged in October 2015.

During the pandemic, he went to stay at his parent’s place in Mad River. Unfortunately, his father was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and passed away in August of 2020. Nathan stayed to take care of his mother and began attending Cal Poly Humbolt in 2022.

Nathan likes how diverse the Humboldt County community is, and he enjoys outdoor activities like fishing and hunting.  He appreciates how many different outdoor adventures you can experience here without even leaving the county.

Nathan joined the local AMVETS chapter in December of 2023 and has really enjoyed their comradery and support.  He was a member of another AMVETS chapter when he was on active duty in Washington state.

Nathan has applied for a job with the Eureka VA clinic as a Peer Support specialist and hopes to get that job and start a new chapter in serving our veteran community.

We are grateful to soldiers like Nathan for the sacrifices they and their families have made through the years to serve our country and our community!
