Geezus, why can’t some people drive their cars or trucks without turning them into complete wrecks or burned out hulks. Slow down, and pay more attention to your surroundings.

You’re certainly right in some cases. How do you know that to be true in this case? A mother, father, sister, brother, aunt, uncle….. lost their life and one badly burned. And you wanna hand out the written dmv test. Have a little compassion/empathy.

After this past few weeks, my compassion for some drivers has dropped considerably, but it is still up there for most passengers that were involved.
There are some drivers that I have vowed to never ride with again.

Accidents and terrible driving aren’t exactly identical twins…. A semi doesn’t just appear in front on you……

You don’t know if the driver had a medical problem. Please show some compassion a person died.

The same thought that one person was betting on about the driver who crashed into the nail and spa business in Eureka, probably right up to the time when EPD handcuffed the driver and booked him into the Humboldt County Jail.

That’s true and as unfortunate it is,accidents happen all the time.

In the case of the Nail/Spa building crash, the driver was under the influence. I have to wonder if that is the case with many collisions. So many are quick to blame in on speeding or texting, but DUI is very real, and doesn’t have to involve alcohol.

That’s the truth! Every time I’ve been to Eureka over the last month or two and it’s been raining, people are passing me doing like 75 and 80 and tailgating each other sometimes only a car length apart. I’ve seen multiple wrecks in the last couple months in my travels north and south when going to Eureka. And then the shit show during the hailstorm the other day? People are driving way too fast out there. I wish the cops would nail more of them when road conditions are as terrible as they’ve been lately. What happened tonight is terrible. Condolences to the family and friends of the person lost in the wreckage.

Agree about the need for enforcement of safe traffic rules. People are driving crazy these days and unfortunately it isn’t only those drivers that pay the price. My comment is not directed to the folks in this tragic accident, just the roads in general these days. So sorry for the loss of life and for the injuries sustained by the survivor 🙁

Unfortunately at times like this the officers are too busy investigating accidents that have already happened to those driving too fast.

That exit is so tight and has a blind spot to see what is directly ahead as one exits. I just didn’t feature a semi would use that exit?

And on the safety corridor a few of the vehicles tailgate too closely, even in the through lane, despite the rain. Very scary, very dangerous.

P.S. Fire extinguishers are a great thing to have in your trunk or secured in the cab your vehicle. $30 at Costco. I carry one and have used one to prevent a car fire a few years back. Can also be used to break out a window.

Yeah, I’ve been here for over a decade and one of my first lessons was that I could pretty much drive as fast as I wanted without worrying about the law. It’s like the Wild West here.

Slow down and pay attention to the road! If you think you are the worlds greatest driver, these roads will prove you are not. Why do so many people around here drive like they are on a suicide mission? What happened to the CHP? Were they defunded?

We’ve had tons of hail in that stretch of road (Singley Rd,101 North). You can’t be in a hurry and survive our winters. I’m very sorry for the loss of life and injuries to the occupants.

Probably in a hurry to get to the casino- cheaper gas and cigarettes or gambling. Get my gas there and that exit is treacherous there while the semi was probably getting back on the freeway. Bad timing for the two vehicles to meet, the car might not have even been speeding at that dangerous intersection. I don’t know how the friends and family care by my saying this, but I’m very sorry for your tragic loss and wish the best possible healing outcome for the injured.

Perfect driving record for over half a century and no accidents and i just learned that hail acts like ball bearings under wheels so now I’ll pull over anytime and every time i can if hailing. Such safety tips are not published often enough nor in nearly as many places as could be every rainy season and pre hail etc. Meanwhile, sensational topics and political arguments bottle neck communications.

Unfortunately hail tends to come down suddenly and for short periods. At least here. Pulling over might be the wrong choice as trying to change direction to pull over may mean skidding out of control. Simply taking your foot off the gas, avoiding turning and letting the car slow without applying brakes may carry you more safely through the issue. At least that’s my thought from a person who got caught on the downward slope of Ficklehill Drive in a hail storm and found that neither braking or turning was an option.

What caused the accident?

It really makes me sad to see so many in the comments assuming what happened with this accident. There are so many options of what could have happened. To just automatically blame it on bad driving and assigning blame without knowing what the circumstances were isn’t okay. I feel really badly for those involved.

Such a very sad read. A HUGE thank you to the semi-truck driver for helping to get the older person free of the burning vehicle. I pray that he will completely heal from his physical and mental wounds. Unfortunately, the 16-year-old passenger perished in the vehicle fire. May that young man RIP.
