Southbound traffic on Highway 101 entering Eureka is snarled this morning after a report of a single vehicle collision around 8:30 a.m. during the Monday morning commute.

On February 26, scanner traffic indicated that a report of a vehicle leaving the roadway near the slough bridge was called in to emergency dispatch before 8:30 a.m. Subsequent scanner traffic stated, “The vehicle is in the bay.”

The Caltrans QuickMap depicts a major traffic gridlock on the southbound lane just north of Eureka.

Reckon somebody merged into them ?

Wonder if they went over the railroad tracks… or did they just slurp into
the mudflats where the old barge was grounded ?

(Old barge is long gone now.)

Jeeze Bozo, you got some history! You probably even remember the Flotsam and Jetsam Sculptures along the edge of the bay mudflats.

Heck… those Flotsam and Jetsam sculptures were NEW.
Could have been a big tourist attraction… gone.
Sighs… then the old fish plants along Humboldt Bay… could have been a major tourist attraction, they would put Monterey to shame. Gone.
Old Eureka train station… great tourist attraction… Gone.
Old Woolen Mill… great tourist attraction… Gone.
Old Brewery… Gone.
Downtown mansions… Gone. (Replaced with the ‘Times Standard’ building).
Buhne Hardware store. That was a classic… Gone.
Then, of course, we’ve got the hideous ‘Brutalist’ Courthouse…
1950’s ‘modern’ City Hall…

Go figure.

As you no doubt remember, it was the Straight Arrow folks who complained about and removed the driftwood sculptures.

Eh ? As far as I know… it was the management of the ‘Wildlife Refuge’ that complained (incompatible with wildlife management) and took them out. Same thing with the old duck hunting cabin near Jacoby Creek… and then of course the Jupiter Dredge.

ah yes, the Dredge at Hookton Slough. Burned shortly after Feds took over the ranch as a wildlife preserve. 4th of July heading to Eureka around sunset to watch fireworks saw wisps of smoke from dredge. Burned to the waterline by morning. They said it was homeless, I say it is pretty much standard for destruction of unwanted historical buildings/items when land is converted to “wildlife” parks. The many cabins across Death Valley national monument that are gone are another example.

Those were old duck hunting blinds. Used to be some along 580 in Berkeley

The last one I remember seeing was the driftwood-airplane-nose-plant. I had heard the airport, and private pilots, complained saying it was “bad luck”. Money talks.

I remember riding the Budd Car from Fort Seward to Eureka after hiking from Dos Rios to Fort Seward, in 1966 winter, with the hiking club. Going through the mile-long tunnel at Island Mountain, after crossing the river on the trestle, was an adventure.

Island Mountain Tunnel is now er… ‘Bat Poop Tunnel’.
A continual rain of… yes… bat crap.
