New Express Bus Route Connects Eureka to Ukiah, Expanding Transit Options in Northern California

Named the Redwood Coast Express, the service runs from Monday through Friday. It departs Eureka at 10 a.m. and includes stops in several towns – Fortuna, Garberville, Leggett, Laytonville, and Willits – before arriving in Ukiah at 1:30 p.m. The return trip begins at 2 p.m. from Ukiah and reaches Eureka at 5:30 p.m.
This schedule is tailored to accommodate day travelers, although individuals with commitments such as medical appointments in Ukiah will need to plan for an overnight stay due to the timing of the return service.
The Redwood Coast Express also facilitates connections with other regional transit networks. It links with Redwood Coast Transit for travel to Crescent City and with Lake Transit for reaching Lake County. Furthermore, there are plans to expand this connectivity to Santa Rosa through a future integration with Mendocino Transit.

Oh no! Now those people from Laytonville and Willits can come up here!!
Or, for $2 each we can clean out the tent cities and send them to a warm climate.
I’d chip in for that
Hmm…I wonder how many homeless we could set up in the old Geigers?
Don’t bus them here, lol we are not maintaining!
Great idea. After we get them down there, we can build a wall to keep them there and have Mendocino County pay for it.
…but Eureka has that strong fenty dope. Ukiah bums will be on the move
We don’t like you either, please stay away.
Oh no, now all those people from Redway and Eureka can come down here!
so no more grayhound or amtrak?
What makes you think that?
This is neat, but little more.
We really don’t take public transportation seriously in our society.
There should be an affordable bus connecting Humboldt to the Bay Area that runs hourly.
Public transportation is a good thing. What do you think would be the economics of your proposed hourly bay to bay runs? My suspicion is that it would be very expensive. The fares would either need to pay the costs or the service would need to be taxpayer funded (subsidized). If the per passenger mile cost were reasonable, public funding could be sensible. If the per passenger mile cost were not reasonable, public funding would not be reasonable.
Your idea would certainly make fentanyl transportation and distribution more convenient for many who currently have to go through the trouble and risk of planning and making a private road trip.
Public funding will indeed need to be part of the equation.
But we already provide billions of dollars per year in subsidies to the fossil fuel industry.
Subsidized public transportation would benefit a wider swath of society and, if buses ran on clean energy such as Hydrogen, it would greatly lower our greenhouse gas emissions.
Private cars already provide a convenient way to transport illicit substances.
Besides, if we really wanted to tackle that problem, limiting demand is always more effective that trying to cut off supply.
How do you know so much about how drug dealers operate?
This is terrific. But how long will the bus tarry at each stop? I mean—assuming I call ahead with my order—can I hop off and grab a quick burger at the Peg House?
You could try to
bribetip the driver?for sure you can just ride that far. hang out for a couple of hours. go over and take a swim before you eat on a hot summer day. walk around and look at the trees in the cool season.
I wonder what the regular fares with be?
That would be helpful.
Also, how well is it synchronized with the bus from Willow Creek? Is there a link from the Arcata transit center that will meet this bus in a timely manner?
And, how does this compare, schedule and fare wise, with the current offerings? Greyhound and Amtrak?
It would be good for Humboldt Transit to reach out to Partnership Healthcare and inform them of this service. As well as Social Services.
Partnership regularly ships patients south, for example, to Laytonville, for dental care, and Social Services drives vans of very poor people, weekly, to Laytonville for the same.
Partnership might be able to pay for a motel, for the overnight, and come out ahead, price wise, over paying for a taxi. Especially if they contract with a motel, or even a casino hotel.
As I get older and don’t drive as far, I could see using a service like this.
And will it have on-board internet, as the Willow Creek bus now does?
Here’s an opportunity for inter county cooperation.
A grant was recently awarded, and documented in this newspaper, enabling charging stations and electric buses to serve the highway 96 corridor, to Willow Creek, with connections to Arcata/Eureka.
The several counties’ supervisors could collaborate and apply for a federal grant to do the same with this route.

Fantastic news! Even though we drive EV’s – Chevy Bolts and EV Van which cost virtually zero to run – (haven’t paid for fuel in YEARS), we prefer NOT having to drive all the time and public transit is an awesome option which far too many backwards-thinking folks seem to lack the brains to utilize. We use SMART train religiously in the north bay – it’s FANTASTIC, (especially with our bikes). I already enjoy the Redwood shuttle bus which stops in Weott and am immensely grateful that some forward-thinking agencies have managed to produce this new express service to Ukiah. If ONLY there were still a train: Anyone old enough to remember traveling that way around here would care to comment, we’d love to hear your tales….Live Free Or Drive!!
Your half way to any health care..
Guessing yah gotta walk the rest of the way.
Would it not make more sense for us to beef up like Greyhound? If their buses are full, this makes sense, if not this is a waste of Petroleum imo
