[UPDATE all major Roads From I-5 to 101 Open] Multiple North Coast Rivers Flooding or High; Snow Impacting Highways Also

Video by Nathan King taken in the Arcata neighborhood of Westwood at Stromberg and Cropley.

UPDATE: All major roads open.

Rain is dumping over northwestern California today. According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, “The Mad River at Arcata and the Russian River at Hopland are forecast to reach flood stage tonight. The Eel River, Smith River, and Van Duzen River are forecast to reach monitor stage. For more specific river impacts visit: https://www.cnrfc.noaa.gov.”

Local roadways are impacted at the normal spots (though drought may have made this seem much less normal.) But major highways such as Hwy 36 at Carlotta are fully closed.

In addition, snow is impacting mountain passes which has caused the full closure of I-5 in places and forced chain requirements on Hwy 299.

Please consider staying home. These kind of conditions can be dangerous. For those on rural roads especially remember that the NWS reminds travelers, “Do not attempt to drive across a flooded roadway.”

And for those on dirt roads, there’s still a little light left at this point of the day to water bar and protect your driveways.
Items in Green are updated after 7:15 p.m. And in blue for 8:27 p.m. And in Purple for 9:43 p.m. And in Orange for 10:57 p.m.

I do not understand why people let their pets or they themselves touch that water if at all avoidable cause that has got to be some of the nastiest water with bacteria, petroleum and pesticide run off, etc. etc.

So much for man caused climate change. We are back to what we are known for, rain, fog. Good ol southern tip of the PNW.

Except for the exceptionally dry November and December, and the hottest year on record in 2023.

You mean Winter? Yeah, that’s still a thing.
2023 was the warmest on record gobally, though.

We really need to get busy building that offshore wind farm.

Let’s hope the local wind project goes bankrupt before it’s built like the big east coast project

You realize that increased rain is part of climate change right? It’s not just localized hot temperatures.

No, bro. They don’t get it. They think it just means it’ll get hot. They ignore the part of anthropogenic climate change where it involves extreme temperature swings, increased precipitation and clouds, shorter and milder winters in some places and harsher conditions in others. Fox News doesn’t educate them on the issue, so how would they know?

You haven’t been around long if you don’t know this amount of rain is normal

Has nothing to do with rain at your house, it’s about the heating of the globe causing extreme swings in weather. Dec was the warmest on record for Ca & 2023 was warmest year globally.
Look at the extreme cold, extreme heatwaves, extreme cold, extreme downpours, extreme tornados, extreme hurricanes all recently breaking records.

It’s the weather and not climate change. Davos is selling that its something you must personally suffer for. You are guilty if you heat or cool a home, apartment or your place of business.

Fishing must stop to save all the fish. Tens of thousands must stop all farming and you must eat Bill Gates contaminated and vaccine added food guaranteed to debilitate you or drop your sperm or egg counts so you never reproduce.

Better say your prayers with the elite eugenicists getting ahold of planetary politics while you’ve been fast asleep at the boob tube even as they captured your government. But that’s just a conspiracy theory despite folks like Attali and Turner and Kissinger and Biden and Trump and Schwab rubbing your faces in it. Welcome to totalitarianism and the loss of your Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Watch the roads for undercutting along the water washed asphalt. And, carry emergency supplies and tell people when you leave and when you expect to check back in.

Contest, with facts, just one of the claims. You can’t, because everything stated is the truth. One liners and platitudes, that’s all that’s in your quiver.

Except this is the most flooding we’ve seen in over 50 years. When is the last time you saw Blue Lake Blvd flood and 101 be completely closed at Hookton due to both lanes being completely underwater?

Earlier today there was more water on the roads than they could shed, there was standing water all over the freeways, absolutely ripe for hydroplaning.

No its not. 2017 & 2019 were worse & 1986 & 1997 were far worse.
Mad River flooded more than expected yesterday because Ruth Lake is at capacity & overflowed

1955, and 1964 but of course climate change started years before 1955 right.

The Mad is flooding in 3rd place for all time records, highest since 1997, little more to go and it breaks the 2nd highest 28.4 ft crest of 1955, 1964 it crested at 32.7 ft

Just drove from crescent City to orick and the flooding north or Bald hills road on 101 is very dangerous, low clearance cars are going to be swamped because the creek is flowing over the road, both lanes under a creek of flowing water. Funny thing was there were flaggers for a little puddle covering 10% of the road and around the corner the road is knee high .

If you need a way north off the 101 you can take the Palmer exit and Tompkins Hill Road will take you past the flooding

I just hope they keep trucks with more than 2 axles off Tompkins. They get stuck on the hairpin turn before the climb and block the road for the rest of us.
