How One Man’s Heroic Efforts (with the Support of His Community) Led to a Lost Dog Making It Home for the New Year

Today on New Year’s Eve, a large white dog named Violet, who went missing on December 22nd from Hyampom, has been safely reunited with her owner, thanks to the tireless efforts of Trinity County resident Tony Lynch and the greater Willow Creek community.

To our delight, Tony told us this afternoon that our previous article on the lost dog written by reporter Lisa Music and published on Redheaded Blackbelt yesterday, played a crucial role in this happy ending. A reader recognized Violet from the story and contacted the owner, leading to an emotional reunion today.

Violet’s journey back home began when Tony heard her desperate howls early on Christmas Eve morning in the Burnt Ranch/Willow Creek area at the Cedar Flat Bridge near a rest stop on Highway 299.

Violet kept traveling from one end of the bridge to the other, often howling or crying but refusing to let anyone close to her.

Tony told us, “I don’t have good vision but I got great ears. I could hear [the dog] from the other side of the bridge, quarter mile away.”

Even though it was three in the morning on Christmas Eve and cold, Tony drove down and quickly started helping. He used his car to warn people driving by so they wouldn’t hit the scared dog who was moving in and out of the road.

The dog wouldn’t go to Tony when he tried to help it and just walked back and forth, looking like it was waiting for its owner to come back.

A makeshift enclosure provided by Two Rivers Pet and Wildlife Welfare Services was erected to trap Violet.

Over the next week, Tony’s dedication to Violet’s safety was unwavering. Efforts to catch the dog were not successful though many in the community tried to help. Local residents took to social media platforms like Facebook to organize a grassroots rescue mission. But the big white dog evaded all attempts to capture her.

Violet watched as agencies and citizens worked together to catch her.

Tony recounted using a case and a half of safety flares to protect her as she roamed near the bridge at night. “Last night she was active coming down and crossing the bridge from seven o’clock in the evening till 10 o’clock at night. And then she started to again….at five o’clock this morning,” he explained.

Today, when the owner arrived, Tony said he knew where to direct her to look. “We had located [Violet] with [a] drone earlier and knew where she had been laying,” said Lynch. “So I sent [the owner] up ahead of me. She hollered…All of a sudden, I heard her say, ‘There you are.’ And…[Violet] just came out and was all happy–tail wagging.”

Tony expressed his relief at the successful reunion. “This was a hard victory,” he told us. “But it feels so good. I’m torn between screaming and hollering and crying like a baby,” he said.

Now he plans to finally take a well-deserved rest and spend time with his wife, who had been supportive throughout the ordeal. “[S]he had to put up with me missing Christmas,” he explained. “She knows once I get hooked on an animal. I’m as tenacious as Chihuahua on caffeine.”

When asked about people calling him a hero, Lynch dismissed the praise. “I’m not a hero. I’m just one guy,” he stated. “Everybody out there can do this. If they just come together. I have such a wonderful community out here. Everybody reaches out to everybody else.”

Tony Lynch and the support he had from the greater Willow Creek community helped bring a positive outcome in a very difficult situation. Tony wanted to thank Caltrans who provided him with safety flares and a safety vest. He also thanked Two Rivers Pet and Wildlife Welfare Services that brought a large cage that was used to attempt to trap Violet.

He also went on to advocate for all stray dogs, “They don’t need to be this many dogs let loose on the road and running free. There is a person out there for all of ’em. I know there is.”

Two Rivers Pet and Wildlife Welfare Services were helpful in trying to capture Violet. Donations to support their ongoing efforts to help all animals in the area can be made to Two Rivers Pet and Wildlife Welfare Services.

In Second Hand Lions Robert Duvall’s character points out that there are some things you have to believe even if they can’t be proved. One is that true love never dies. Another is that people are basically good at heart. This story proves the point.

I have been following Tony Lynch on the Willow Creek site since Christmas Eve when he found the dog all I’ve been able to do is post words of encouragement and repost on lost Dog sites. if I had been 20 years younger, I would’ve gone and helped him. I live on the other side of the mountain of Hwy 36. I appreciate Tony Lynch so much. Crying tears of joy today when he got Violet home to her person. I’m sorry her person didn’t see the post earlier. Although, it all worked out in the end one of the best feel good stories of the year. Thank you, Tony Lynch, Lisa Music, Kym Kemp and RHBB.

Tony Lynch is a real hero (having followed Violet’s sage on RHBB and the FB Willow Creek Bulletin Board). So great to have a heart-warming story to end one worrisome year to enter another.
Reminds me of the woman that jumped into Humboldt Bay to save the older man, can’t recall the name or specifics but she was also from Willow Creek and RHBB reported the story.

I witnessed that heroic rescue ,as I seem to recall she did not hesitate and as her car came to a stop she jumped over a rail down to the bay and swam like a super hero and opened the door of a sinking truck moments after he had accidenttaly accelerated in to the water due to a sudden stroke something like that supernatural to say the least

Thank You Tony! That beautiful dog would have been dead meat on that road w/o you. And Thanks to the good people of Willow Creek area! Stray dogs are just beautiful souls looking for a kind home. Tony said that better. I love me humans that love and look out for these dogs…

And I’m not sure what to say about Violet’s people. How can you not prioritize this missing dog? It was fairly common knowledge in Willow Creek for a week. Were they not even looking for Violet?! That part is sad…

People may not realize how far their lost dogs may roam (or be taken) it is FREQUENTLY through the efforts of unofficial volunteers matching up lost dog flyers or facebook posts with Humboldt Paws Cause, the shelter’s website, or a sighting in public that lost pets are reunited, especially when so few people tag and microchip their pets.

No sale. Their faithful, loving dog is lost and they can’t be bothered to check in with local media (like this blog) or post fliers or check in with the shelters you mention. Or drive around or something.
Not realizing how far their faithful companion has strayed or been taken has absolutely no bearing on their failure to do exactly what you suggested.

For once, we are on the same wavelength. Maybe that augurs well for the new year. Seems really odd that Violet’s people seem to have been so blase’ and uninvolved in her rescue. Weird and sad, since the dog loves them so much and it is a small community.

Thank you, Farce, for once again pointing out the obvious question, when most people are being too “nice” to notice. Ha! Well, the story about the nice guy is clearly appropriate and he’s much appreciated. But we have been missing a cat for a couple of weeks and can guarantee that if there’d been public sightings and major newsblog articles and involvement by public safety agencies, etc., we would have had the cat back on Day One.

It is odd. I’m in several Hyampom groups and don’t see any posts about this dog being missing or found. Not sure if there were posts and they were deleted or if the owners left those stones unturned.

It does raise some doubts though. Sadly, too many Hyampom dogs seem to wander freely and lack proper care and owner accountability, sometimes causing trouble for other people and pets/livestock.

With all the seeming insanity in the world today, I have never lost faith that there are good people that far outnumber the bad. Tony raises as the cream of the crop. Despite his modesty I vote for him as hero of the year. What great story to wake up to.

Thank-you Lisa and Kym for telling “The rest of the story” and start the new year right.

Shared the story of the poor dog to friends and family WI, IA and TX. Whole support group of faraway people were pulling for him. It is very cold outside in the winter up there, and Mr. Lynch never gave up. Everyone loved the outcome yesterday. Thanks to ALL who helped and reported.

Many thanks to Tony and his wife, Kym, Lisa, RHBB, CalTrans, Two Rivers Pet, and the loving community.

Our furry girl says Woof! aaaRRROOOOOooooooo to Violet. But she added a solid GRRRRR to the shaming Cruella commenters. She also asked me to pass on that she has it on good authority that Tony has a warm furry comfy bed and lots of treats and toys waiting for him over the rainbow bridge whenever he should decide to make that trip; no hurry.

Thanks again.

Tony, if you’re over 60 and single would you be so kind as to marry me? What a guy! Dang of course you’re already spoken for. Sigh. Are you a cancer or Taurus by any chance? Got friends 1/2 as good as you? Thanks to the whole team for warming me old tired heart and reuniting that pup with their human.
