A semi truck crash on Hwy 101 just south of Crescent City near Hamilton Road in Del Norte County at about 2:45 p.m. has completely closed the major north/south traffic corridor. Dispatch requested an ambulance respond to the scene.

Caltrans posted an alert on Facebook, notifying the public of the closure stating, “U.S. 101 is fully closed south of Crescent City (PM 22.7) in Del Norte County due to a traffic collision…Currently, there is no estimated time of reopening. Please check https://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/ or the QuickMap app for the latest road conditions.”

According to first reports from the scene, a logging truck’s trailer overturned spilling its contents. As a result, emergency responders and highway maintenance crews are working to clear the wreckage and make the highway safe for travel again.

The crash reportedly involved multiple vehicles, and the extent of the injuries sustained by those involved is currently unclear.

According to Caltrans QuickMap, the closure of Hwy 101 in Del Norte County is causing significant traffic backups in the area, however, there is no alternative routes unless travelers head east on 299 north of Arcata.

Authorities have not provided an estimated time for the reopening of Hwy 101 at this time. The investigation into the incident is ongoing. We’ll update with further details about the cause of the crash and the condition of those involved as that information becomes available.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

I pray that the logging truck driver and anyone else that maybe injured from the accident will be ok. I don’t know how the accident happened, so at this point I just hope all is well. An ambulance was reported as responding to the scene, and no mention of lights or lights and siren.

There’s a big difference between a logging truck or a converted flatbed with Turkey racks.
Logging trucks are much safer on the road

You’re right about turkey racks. I thought flatbed on first glance at that picture but on closer inspection that is a big sign board.

IMHO: Based on ‘recent capsizes’… most likely a lumber flatbed with added on log carrier… headed for the sawmill at Brookings.
CHP, DOT and the Lumber Company should be looking carefully at those flatbed/log carrier roll overs. Sooner or later something bad is going to happen.

If that’s true, Then why do so many roll over on our highways here in Del Norte Co. Or is it the drivers. They tend to be more aggressive around here than your typical big rig driver.
