A pedestrian struck by a vehicle in Arcata this week sustained major injuries according to the Arcata Police Department.

Sergeant Altizer stated that around 11:39 a.m. on September 18, APD officers responded to the intersection of G and 11th Street. “When we arrived on scene, there was a pedestrian down on the roadway, and the vehicle that had struck her was pulled over on the side of the road and had called 911. [The] pedestrian was conscious but had major injuries and was taken to the hospital,” Altizer stated.

A full statement was taken from the driver and witnesses at the scene.

This is becoming an all to common occurrence.
pedestrians and drivers need to use caution and be aware of each other.

I think people are more concerned with looking at social media on their phones than pretty much anything else, including driving and crossing the street…

More than in any other town, Arcata pedestrians walk into the street without looking. It takes defensive driving to a new level.

I hope the pedestrian fares well from her injuries. I also hope the driver is able to cope with the mental trauma of hitting someone. That the driver stopped and called 911 counts for something.

Seems like more proof to me that shutting down the proposal to turn K and L streets into time saving, one way, speed zones was a good idea.

Pedestrians need to face the truth that the automobile is an existential threat to their well-being and act accordingly. Yes, this is too common an occurrence.

“existential threat” my eye. They are a very real PHYSICAL threat to humans and critters.

What is worse, cars/trucks now have huge window frame/supports now filled with air bags. These block so much of drivers view to either side they make the vehicle increasingly dangerous. It has forced me to begin turn, then wait and ensure there are no pedestrians, then proceed .. Safety makes cars more dangerous. Great idea there engineers. 🙁

There’s been no change to driver visibility due to non-deployed air bags. That’s not a thing.

Hey, this person stole my idea. I’m the one that came up with the whole “close your eyes when crossing the street thing”. Karma got’em!

That is a terrible thing to say, karma will get you. You know nothing about this situation, she WAS in the cross walk in the middle of it!

Talk about jumping to conclusions. You cannot accurately conclude the location of the pedestrian in the roadway before the collision based on that photo. A person hit by a car typically goes flying, whether hit at 15mph or 25mph.

good job jumping to conclusions where the pedestrian is at fault.

In general, the vehicles roll through the stop signs. That’s not ok.

I just pray that the woman that was hit will make a complete recovery from her injuries. To the driver that hit the woman, thank you for pulling right over and calling 911. You may have saved her life.

Oh good, Martin is here with his thoughts and prayers. If you really want to do something material, then donate to her medical care. This is America, remember? Life-long medical debt could be in the person’s future. God doesn’t pay medical bills.

I sometimes wonder if drivers even pay attention these days. So many people are still driving illegally talking on phones in their hands; and even if they have an on-dash phone, they’re attention is split. On top of that, the modern dashboard has turned into a major distraction itself with all the various displays. The old dash was simplicity in itself, speedometer, odometer, gas gauge, radio with buttons, and a heater/air conditioner. Some say all this new stuff brings safety and convenience, but I’ll repeat, in the end it’s a major distraction and I think leads to more accidents.

I agree, with with all the gadgets and the screens in the vehicle for the driver to adjust things is a very big distraction and about the phone on the dash that’s absolutely a distraction. When it rains they’re going to glance over to see who it is, so yeah that takes your mind off of your driving because you’re talking to them specially if you’re arguing with somebody on the phone you’re not going to be thinking about your driving or what’s happening around you outside the vehicle when you’re driving so yeah I agree all these gadgets are not good. Also phones not good there should be no phones allowed in the car except to answer a phone call not on the dash it should be put away emergencies only to be used for phone calls. Bring back our pay phones that’s what I say

One of the many reasons I have a vehicle with no screens.

If a modern dashboard distracts you that much, please don’t drive.
