[UPDATE 3 p.m.: Reopened] Southbound 101 at a Standstill by King Salmon
Traffic is backed up on southbound 101 as seen from just north of the King Salmon exit.
At about 2:25 p.m., we received word that southbound Hwy 101 near the King Salmon exit is backed up. As of 2:38 p.m., the line stretches back almost to the Humboldt Hill exit.
There is nothing showing on the California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Information Page.
Please avoid the area as we endeavor to learn the cause.
Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.
UPDATE 2:42 p.m.: One of our readers sent the following photo of a CHP officer stopping traffic.

UPDATE 2:49 p.m.: The road has now opened back up.
UPDATE 3 p.m.: Dispatch at the California Highway Patrol Office will only state, “We don’t have a comment at this time.”

New Years Eve 1991/92 I was in a Third World jungle where a 10 year war had just ended and pretty much most able bodied men there had been guerrilla fighters and were armed pretty well by US standards. I ate a big pile of shrooms and took a bottle of Johnny Walker and roamed around town seeing friends and employees. A little before midnight we began shooting clips full of tracers up into the sky for a 1/2 hour or so. There were hundreds of people celebrating that way at least. I was ridiculed some for shooting out over the ocean and for retreating underneath the dubious protection of a corrugated metal roof to reload. As far as I know I was the only person under the influence of anything save alcohol because I witnessed pot smokers jabbed with bayonets a little bit while they were being arrested a couple times. Just remembering due to the memberries I had with my breakfast.

The local economy is in a severe tailspin. For decades we were a magnet for criminals and drug addicts to come here and grow weed for piles of cash. The Green Rush… Now it is over and the stress on these mentally incompetent criminals is overbearing. We are only in the early stages of this social breakdown. Oh, This reminds me of the Movie “Captain Phillips”, where a freight ship runs through somali pirate waters. Billions of dollars of freight and dozens of crewmembers aboard that can’t carry a single weapon, and the crew get hi-jacked by 3 somali’s with AK’s. There is no sense in society anymore when the criminals with guns outnumber the law abiding! And to make it worse the law man is armed to the teeth! You are very correct in saying that too many of them just walk away from jail and out onto the streets. This will not stop with a slap on the hand. Prison or long- termin jail time does not seem to affect them either. If they kill someone, they should receive the death penalty and carry it out. No sitting on death row for years!!!
