Pretty sure the community of arkata is happy to have all those idiots and radical students remove from their Grandparents, radical 60s dream.

Are we supposed to unscramble those words in order to make them make sense?
You may not be the best person to be insulting someone who is receiving a college education.

All the reports have been biased. I am a student and I disagree with the protestors bent for not getting their way. This was not our 60s heros. This was poorly coordinated without research and frightened the folks who were inside Siemens Hall when it was barricaded. Instead they hurt the students who needed on campus interaction and access and had no consideration for all the other students affected by the situation

But the protestors didn’t close the campus, the university did. The protestors initiated the conflict and the university chose to escalate it. It’s too bad that the university administration doesn’t have any strategy for dealing with disgruntled students other than calling the riot cops.

Although, maybe that’s the best lesson for the protestors. The state will always and perhaps can only respond with violence. Their monopoly on violence is their primary source of authority and they will exercise it anytime they are inconvenienced

Im sure you having class in person rather than online is far more important than them, however poorly they did it, bringing forward a widespread conversation about the war crimes being committed by Israel with our American tax dollars.

As usual, Terry’s superb artistic abilities eclipse his highly questionable political commentary.

It’s actually the building occupiers who thought they could do whatever they want, including vandalizing and destroying public property, resisting arrest, assaulting police and call it “free speech.”

I agree with what you say regarding the recent occupy incidents. However, CPH has had a long history of instructors and administrators who, just because they have a PHD think they are gods and can teach/indoctrinate whatever they choose in lieu of actual education. Lately they went as far as to start the “make up your own degree” program “for those who don’t fit in.” Because of this, a college diploma is now worthless if it comes from CPH.

The build-your-own-degree has been around for decades.
And, for most jobs, it’s not important what degree you earned
so much as it is important that you earned a degree.

Which is, I think, Alf’s point?

That would represent a deep misunderstanding of the current job market. Certain technical positions require specific degrees, but the majority of jobs in our economy just look at a bachelor’s degree in any subject as proof that a person can complete long and involved projects and work in teams as well as that you’ve learned the basics of interacting with modern digital technology.

Maybe a degree is not important for “most jobs” that entail saying “would you like fries with your order?”.
For well paying jobs in Engineering, Medical, Law and such related jobs; the type of degree is important.

Arcata would be a shell of it’s self without that school…

Arcata would be much better off being “a shell of itself.”

yea, like sohum is better off being “a shell of itself” without the industry as everyone goes bankrupt and the land is worth pennies on the dollar so that carpetbaggers are coming in and scooping things up for almost nothing while the suicide rate jumps. yea, its so much better. great idea.

Arcata does not possess a “self”…

The University will assign one…

Love it or hate it, I won’t root for the further economic decay of Humboldt county. Not that the school is going anywhere

Torgerson restates exactly what I said when HSU became CPH…

They don’t give a damn about the community, and, are intent upon doing what they want.

They stole the Senior Housing Site, and, CPH will take over your town…

Corporate America will own every home, every business, and you are unable to even see what is about to happen. Your local Government, such as it is, is already infiltrated by CPH plants…

Wake up! Quit smokin’ that dope…

They are building San Luis Obispo, North.

Humboldt politics do not count, and are disorganized, corrupt and incompetent anyway..

Watch carefully, and remember, 36 Jihadis in jail resulted in the “New Normal” developing daily in Arcata…

One problem is HSU now CPH has one of the lowest average SAT and GPA of incoming freshman in the CSU system. It’s not the best and brightest students attending Humboldt.

“They are building San Luis Obispo, North.”

CPH will never be near as good as Cal Poly SLO because CP SLO is much, much, much more selective than CPH.

Arcata will never appeal to most people more than SLO cuz SLO has much better weather.

I had a sense that was a David Phillips era film. Always good stuff from that team.

Its pretty sad what CPH is doing to arcata. They have university cops patrolling the Bottoms now. Wild.

We need to realize that Eureka to Mack is the last, desirable and mostly “under developed” section of coastal California. The state throwing down $$$ for the expansion of CPH power and influence is part of a larger plan to control and profit off of humboldt bay. Widening of 101 @ the grove is part of it too. It opens up the redwood curtain.
I think its a 20 year plan.

Its got nothing to do w liberals or democrats or conservatives or republicans, its the rich getting richer, using the law to take whatever is desired by their class.

All those old stickers “keep US out of Humboldt,” i think it would be more appropriate to read “”keep CA out of Humboldt.”

If HSU didn’t move anything forward nothing would happen. Think of that developer that was trying to build more student housing in the now used Craftsmans site. That developer got jerked around for years and spent millions trying to appease the Arcata city council and they still denied it. Luckily the school bought the site and since they are a state entity they can over rule the city council.

Where is the housing for the Gateway Plan? Yeah upon year passes committee and more committees. Now they have this crazy plan to cap the highway with a grant of 148 million (it will be WAY more) to create FIVE acres of land.

Arcata is in a situation because politicians and not actual working people have high-jacked the process of city growth. If anything moves forward it’s only because HSU pushes it forward.

Capping the Highway is the most idiotic plan in history…

Arcata just isn’t in SoCal, but CP SLO is obviously sending their rejects to Arcata and promising Admission to SLO if you do OK in the slums of Arcata…

I used to think Bako was the worst place in California, but now I would cast my vote for Eureka/Arcata/Mckinleyville every time…

It isn’t Pismo…

That’s supposed to be News? Ever hear of the USS Liberty? That was in 1967. This is nothing new. The question is: what are you actually going to do about it? At least the students are trying, which is more than I can say for the vast majority of their parents and grandparents. Keep it up, students! You’re just getting started no doubt…
